Gives you a bit of an idea what we hve been getting and what we can plan to be getting from the Cal. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

***"St. Francis Catholic High School, an all-girls school that is part of the Diocese of Sacramento’s educational system, had planned an event on Tuesday, Jan. 22, in which California Secretary of State Debra Bowen, a longtime backer of abortion and homosexual rights, would join Ned Dolejsi, executive director of the California Catholic Conference, for a presentation entitled “California Catholics: Legislation, Elections and Social Justice.”

Had the event been held, it would have occurred on the 35th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Roe vs. Wade legalizing abortion in all 50 states."***

One thing that is unclear from this article is if the presentation was going to be a debate or just speeches. Does anyone know what the format was going to be? I have much less difficulty with this event if it was a debate as there is always the potential that a debate may help draw a person that is questioning their position on abortion to the pro-life position. Whereas, a speech is inappropriate as it provides no way to rebut what the abortion supporters says.

BTW, I never saw the flier or heard anything about this event either at my parish or the Catholic high school I work at (not St. Francis).

The problem with a debate about the life issues among Catholics in a Roman Catholic setting is that the pro-life and anti-life positions are placed on a par. The message to the students is that a Catholic in public office may be either pro-life or anti-life, and these are debatable positions among Caltholics. This is horrible catechesis and immeasurably weakens the Church’s teaching on a culture of life. BTW is the ED of the California Catholic Conference pro-life?

You make a good point that debate puts both sides on the same level. As far as students attending, the “Speakers Series” at St. Francis is for adults. Other speakers in this series has been publicized as adult events in our parish bulletin.
