We are all trying to bring about the Kingdom of God, some of us just do it in a different way. I wouldn’t have contempt for a priest, aren’t we called to love one another as Christ loved us?
I can have contempt for a person (at least, for their behavior) while loving them. Love doesn’t mean excusing every behavior, it means, among other things, NOT excusing bad behavior. And priests are shepherds, they should be held to a higher standard.

Contempt for a person is incompatible with love.

Definition of “contempt:” “the feeling with which a person regards anything considered mean, vile, or worthless; disdain; scorn.”

In English it is technically correct to use the masculine as the plural for all humanity, and all should be lifted up to this understanding, not us being it down to the limited understanding of radical feminists. I don’t know the actual LA Latin text but I bet it uses a form of the word homo there, which means in the English a word that is equivalent needs to be used. The Latin word homo means “man” or “mankind” and is masculine, as such the English can best reflect this by using the masculine generalization for the species “men”.

But what’s the goal in changing the verbiage being used? Why is there a need to drop “men”?

And I regard the behavior of such priests in such a way. They are false shepherds.

The Mass (the text that is) is originally in Latin, and as I said above, the Latin word can mean either man/men or mankind, and is masculine, so the most logical translation would use “men” in the plural of species.

Do you regard the priests themselves in such a way? Because you suggested in your post that you could have contempt for a person, not just his behavior, while loving him.

Let it go. I’ve made my position clear.

OH, if ONLY. (Agreeing with you. Just wishing that ‘we’ really was universal).

Pardon me, but I attended at PSU in State College and am familiar with the Catholic parishes in the area. Was this parish Our Lady of Victory or Good Shepherd? Those parishes are notorious for getting “creative” with the Mass.

Another reason to switch back to Latin. No one would understand it.

I have kind of a standard comment along those lines. With the Mass in Latin, the priest (not to mention any of the faithful) almost certainly would not be able to ad-lib, and even if they did, nobody would understand it, thus depriving them of the reward they desire for doing so.

Good Shepherd. This was Oct. 2015.

Also, happy birthday!

to me, this came about because of some females resentment about how “everything” is about men/that women were being excluded/that Jesus came to save all people men and women too - not just men.

It’s just ridiculous in my opinion - we are all part of mankind, which until this “indignation” arose no Catholic took offense at that usage, as all understood what it actually meant - all - ie men, women and children and babies.

My parish priest does not say men and I know many priests who don’t say men either. Do I have to say men or can I say “For us and for our salvation?”
It’s best to follow the rubrics of the Mass. Of course men refers to mankind, which I suppose seems outdated to some people. I know parishes when the rubrics refer to God as “He”, they say “God”. I guess some people are just offended by masculine pronouns. Yet they have no problems at the Our Father. 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, the people all saying different things leads to a bit of a shouting match, and that’s no good. It’s far simpler for everyone to just say everything as it is written and supposed to be said.

As far as priests omitting “men”, they are wrong. They should be following what the Missal says. I don’t know why this occurs. While I have a great respect for all priests, it drives me absolutely nuts when I see priests start ad libbing stuff. I find it absolutely amazing that simple direction following has become such an antiquated notion.

Personally I wouldn’t change it as it’s a sort of pride, but if my priest is changing it I wouldn’t say anything as I am not educated enough to know why it’s wrong but I am guessing that’s why you are asking. That’s the problem with changing things, first it’s one word and you think ok, we’ll let that one go then it’s another word substitute then another then another and before you know it the meaning is changed and people have not realised. For that reason, I think it should not be changed but if you are going to challenge superiors then be careful that you know what you are doing. For your self, dont change things, that’s my two cents worth.

Well it is obvious that when they crafted “for us men” they quite literally felt that their mothers should find their own means of salvation.
