Priest who concelebrated Mass with Presbyterian minister has faculties suspended, writes apology letter to parish

The priest who invited a Presbyterian minister to concelebrate a Mass at St. Norbert Catholic Church in Orange has written a letter of apology to his fellow priests and parishioners over the incident.

“Church law (canon 908) prohibits ‘Catholic priests from concelebrating the Eucharist with priests or ministers of Churches or ecclesial communities which are not in full communion with the Catholic Church,” wrote Fr. Agustin Escobar in a letter dated Feb. 15. “That is why last Monday, when he learned of my actions, Bishop Brown immediately suspended my faculties to carry out any priestly sacramental activities. That is why you will not see me celebrating Masses here at St. Norbert. The Bishop was right to do so. What I did was a grace error on my part.”

Some parishioners described themselves as “shocked and appalled” after Fr. Escobar introduced Pastor Steve Whitney of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Sacramento at St. Norbert’s 9 a.m. Sunday Mass on Feb. 13. Sources told California Catholic Daily that Rev. Whitney concelebrated the Mass with Fr. Escobar, took Communion, and was allowed to distribute Communion to parishioners – facts now confirmed in Fr. Escobar’s letter of apology.

This is a peace of news I have not seen, but I am from Finland, and we don’t get all the news. What did happen was of course wrong, and against the Church law,why this happen? I guess that is the first question, but this is not my battle to fight, and I forgive without any doubt. This will not make me more popular here but that is my problem. Forgiveness comes with two things,is the person really sorry, and will this be the only time a thing like this happened? If both are answered “yes,I am sorry” and “yes, this will never happen again” the forgiveness is “valid”. When I put conditions on my forgiveness I use my instinct as a lawyer with my forgiveness.

We must forgive and pray for him. How else would we expect the world to get rid of its injustice and plagues, if not we walk ahead and be the bright shining lights - in the many dark places.

Never, ever forget what our duty and responsibility is. The Lord went through horrid sufferings for us all and this is the very least thing we can do.

Repent, confession, absolution > Forgiveness.

Good for him for realizing what he did was a mistake and apologizing for it!

Most people now days would try to defend their actions even when they know they are wrong.

I certainly forgive this priest and will be praying for him!

I am very glad he appolized. This shows that he is not a proudful man and willing to seek forgiveness. I will pray for him.

I commend his bishop for taking this action, but curious person that I am, I wonder just what was this priest hoping to achieve by this?

I did think about this question when I was out walking my dog,I think best when I am out with the dog,and yes. We must forgive him. What he do with our forgiveness is out of our hands, but we have done the right thing. God bless you and God bless him.

The editor in me is cringing at this typo (at least I hope it is…) in the original article:
What I did was a grace error on my part.

The OP was a cut-n-paste from the linked article. They must have corrected the error.
They did. One of the comments at the CatCatholic website mentioned the mistake, and an editor replied: “Thanks for bringing this error to our attention. It has been corrected.”

It is a very good thing that this priest asked for forgiveness. However, I am surprised that the parishioners were surprised by his actions. Look at the parish bulletin for his parish (he is not the pastor) and you will see that they promote Sr. Helen Prejean and Fr. Richard Rohr. I am sure most are aware of Sr. Prejean but here is an article about Fr. Rohr…

Very sadly, much of the clergy and religious have gone this way and that, delving into topics like the Enneagram, centering prayer and Reiki, just to name a few. These things are quite widespread, in fact, years ago I attended classes sponsored by our archdiocese under the umbrella of “prayer ministry” on some of these subjects that were based more on psychology rather than spirituality. Just last year I enrolled in scripture classes (and paid my fee for the first quarter) to be taught by Benedictine nuns in a nearby town. I dropped out after seeing a printed brochure in which they tout and call theyselves “Masters of Reiki.”

That’s what you get when you change the Mass to look like a protestant communion service! In the 1962 Rite this would have been IMPOSSIBLE!

I do believe this was against his church. I also believe that everyone makes mistakes. Also maybe the other reverand wanted to see what a catholic mass was like because maybe he wants to convert. I think that this priest should be forgiven for his actions.

Just as I suspected, they are PCUSA. This would never have happened with PCA.

Why is it okay to have joint “prayer services” but wrong to have a joint “mass”? I agree that he should NOT have distributed communion, but I don’t see anything else wrong with it. Would it have been wrong if he simply wandered in and attended mass? Is it wrong, if you decide to attend a service at the Protestent Church? Baptist? Lutheran?

If we all came together to praise God then maybe all the religious civil wars would go away.

I’m a Catholic, and I’m not allowed to concelebrate at the Altar.

For one, the Presbyterian Minister doesn’t have the Priestly Faculties of Holy Orders.

Neither do I.

All Catholics know that anyone can wander in and attend Mass.
(Reception of Holy Communion is reserved for members who believe like we do, and if they do believe-they will join).

If Catholics don’t know their Faith-they should obstain from attending Services at Protestant churches. They do not need confusion.

God Bless you.
+Jesus, I Trust In You!
Love, Dawn
