What do you think?

Do you agree with this Martin Luther quote? -

“No sin can separate us from Him, even if we were to kill or commit adultery thousands of times each day.”
Let Your Sins Be Strong: A Letter from Luther to Melanchthon”.– c.1521)

I agree…It seems to me that no sin can keep us from Gof IF we sincerely seek forgiveness.

Of course I don’t believe it. I’m a Catholic, so I accept the Catholic teaching on mortal sin.

What I don’t get is why anyone ever listened to that crackpot in the first place.

I used to think that. Of course, now being Catholic, I know better. 😃

What about the “Born-again” Christians and the “Once Saved Always Saved” (OSAS) crowd, don’t they believe that this applies to anyone, after they are “Born-again”? In other words, that their “Salvation is guaranteed” and that, they cannot lose it because of sin…any sin?

Yep, they do. Like I said, I used to be one (born-again Protestant of whatever practice I saw fit at the time) so I should know 😛 . And even then, I always wondered “well, wait a sec, how about killing someone? How about insert nasty sin you can think of here?” I always had those questions, even as a born-again. But, like I said before, now that I’m Catholic I know better. Praise Jesus for that! 👍

Actually they believe that God is all powerful, and therefore He can forgive the sins mentioned regardless of the number of times those sins are committed. Don’t you believe that God can do whatever He wants to do?

God apparently forgave Peter, no?

Of course we believe God can do whatever He wants.
If you do then you must also believe he can be truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.

Peace
James

I thought so…BTW, where did you get that picture of me…😃

Perhaps you missed the point, SAINT Peter changed. He saw his sin and corrected himself. He didn’t keep denying God knowing it was wrong.

We all sin, but realizing it and trying to stop our sins and to follow God is what God in part judges us by.

OSAS is bogus. Noone has ever been saved by what they do or believe. Just read the Bible, even an abridged 66 book version proves this. Only Jesus can save us and Jesus alone. Jesus decides who is saved, period. He gave us some of the standards He will use but He is free to have more. He never changes and never lies.

No, you missed the point. The point was whether God could forgive multiple serious sins and the obvious answer that you fail to grasp is that of course He can because He can do whatever He wishes to do. Even if the person doesn’t repent, God could still forgive the sins, otherwise God wouldn’t so powerful, now would He…

God doesn’t always forgive.
Matthew 6:
[14] For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you;
[15] but if you do not forgive men their trespasses,** neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. **

God doesn’t always forgive.
Matthew 6:
[14] For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you;
[15] but if you do not forgive men their trespasses,** neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. **
The point is that He can, not that He will.

Now that people really can kill thousands in a day or commit genetic adultery with thousands a day (as with sperm banks), it is all the more important to know.
Of course it’s up to God what to forgive. He is merciful but He asks certain things of us generally and repentance is one, as is confession of mortal sin or some effort to confess. But if you’re on your way to kill someone and you drop into a confessional to ask forgiveness of what you’re about to do, knowing you mean to do it, God knows you aren’t repentant.
