10 monks among 12 hurt in German monastery fire, numerous objects of art history were damaged

Firemen work at a Franciscan monastery in Fuessen, southern Germany, after a fire broke out yesterday. Ten monks, including one aged 100 years old, have been injured during the fire. Emergency services managed to get all the residents – aged between 42 and 100—out of the burning building. The monastery sustained around 100,000 euros ($131,850) worth of damage and, according to police, numerous objects of art history were damaged.

All Masses for the Feast of the Ephiphany were cancelled in the St Stephan Church whilst firefighters fought to rescue the inhabitants of the monastery. Nine ambulances, three emergency doctors, two emergency helicopters and firefighters from Füssen, Hopfen am See, Weßensee ,Schwangau and Rieden totalling 130 fireman attended the blaze.

Father Frank Deuring, Parish Priest of Füssen visited the scene and asked parishioners to pray for the Franciscans in Füssen, especially Father Askanius, the oldest Franciscan in the German Province, who was flown by helicopter to the trauma centre in Murnau with life threatening injuries, due to smoke inhalation. He is 101 years old. Mayor Paul Jacob also visited the scene later to talk with the emergency services.

Police said they thought the fire had started around 6:30 am in the residential area of the monastery, probably in the room of the 100 year-old man. Authorities were working to identify a cause on Sunday afternoon.

100-year-old father succumbs to his injuries Monastery Fire

The day after the fire in a monastery in Füssen Ostallgäu probably the oldest Franciscan priest in Germany has died of his injuries on Monday. The 100 year old monk died during the morning in a special hospital, a police spokesman said

The damage to the building amounted to preliminary estimates point to at least € 100,000. Additionally, there is a high and yet to be quantified damage to the historic artifacts in the monastery. The priest would be on 12 April 101 years old become.
