-27 and the males likewise gave up natural relations with females and burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity-

This clearly states these men where already in a relationship so the thing St Paul objected to was the fact they abandoned there wives and betrayed THERE nature.

-26 Therefore, God handed them over to degrading passions. Their females exchanged natural relations for unnatural-

That is not very specific now is it?
I’m sorry but I don’t read that into the text at all. Whether they abandoned their wives or not, they still did shameful things with males, and were given over to degrading passions. It’s not only the abandonment that is shameful or degrading, but the things they did as well.

So your theory doesn’t wash.

Homosexual acts themselves are seen as shameful and degrading, in the New Testament and thus, by the Church.

But that doesn’t make them unforgivable, nor a “stonable offense”, and nor does the sin itself take away from our command to love the sinner, because at the end of the day we are all sinners that give ourselves over to our passions, be it money, booze, drugs, sex, power, greed, gluttony, pride, whatever.

**He is required to provide a source to back up his assertion, that he has made throughout this thread, that homosexuality is linked with high levels of mental illness, etc. **

Do you need a source to back up the assertion that mother-son or father-daughter incest is linked to a high level of mental illness?

Why does common sense ever need a source other than itself?
It’s not common sense. Common sense is not running onto a motorway blindfolded. It’s not knowing statistics of mental illness in a group.

And I was not asking for sources relating to mental illness and incest, but mental illness and homosexuality. Read the full conversation. He was discussing his experience of mental illness linked with homosexuals seeking sex changes.

I’m working on finding this article online for free. the actual Journal website charges $30 to read the full article  [it’s a 1999 Article in Archives of General Psychiatry.] Interestingly the author of the quote below is the same author of one of the twin studies frequently cited by advocates of the gay gene theory.

The first statement is made by Bailey, and I’m assuming as a lead-in to the next two articles, which I’ve included the abstracts below. Bolding is all mine.
Homosexuality and Mental Illness

NO TOPIC has caused the field of psychiatry more controversy than homosexuality, and 2 articles in this issue of the ARCHIVES are likely to reopen past controversies and begin new ones.1-2 **These studies contain arguably the best published data on the association between homosexuality and psychopathology, and both converge on the same unhappy conclusion: homosexual people are at a substantially higher risk for some forms of emotional problems, including suicidality, major depression, and anxiety disorder. **Preliminary results from a large, equally well-conducted Dutch study3 generally corroborate these findings.

Sexual orientation and suicidality: a co-twin control study in adult men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Several recent studies have found a higher lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts in homosexual males compared with heterosexual control subjects or population rates. These studies used either convenience samples, most without controls, or population-based samples in which confounding factors such as depression and substance abuse were not measured.
METHODS: This study used twins from the population-based Vietnam Era Twin Registry, Hines, Ill. An analytic sample of 103 middle-aged male-male twin pairs from the registry was identified in which one member of the pair reported male sex partners after age 18 years while the other did not. Four lifetime symptoms of suicidality as measured by the Diagnostic Interview Schedule were analyzed: thoughts about death, wanting to die, thoughts about committing suicide, and attempted suicide. A composite measure of reporting at least one suicidality symptom was also assessed.
RESULTS: Same-gender sexual orientation is significantly associated with each of the suicidality measures. Unadjusted matched-pair odds ratios follow: 2.4 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.2 - 4.6) for thoughts about death; 4.4 (95% CI, 1.7 - 11.6) for wanted to die; 4.1 (95% CI, 2.1 - 8.2) for suicidal ideation; 6.5 (95% CI, 1.5 - 28.8) for attempted suicide; and 5.1 (95% CI, 2.4 - 10.9) for any of the suicidal symptoms. After adjustment for substance abuse and depressive symptoms (other than suicidality), all of the suicidality measures remain significantly associated with same-gender sexual orientation except for wanting to die (odds ratio, 2.5 [95% CI, 0.7 - 8.81).
CONCLUSIONS: The substantially increased lifetime risk of suicidal behaviors in homosexual men is unlikely to be due solely to substance abuse or other psychiatric comorbidity. While the underlying causes of the suicidal behaviors remain unclear, future research needs to address the inadequacies in the measurement of both sexual orientation and suicidality in population-based samples.

Is sexual orientation related to mental health problems and suicidality in young people?
Fergusson DM, Horwood LJ, Beautrais AL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: This study examines the extent to which gay, lesbian, and bisexual young people are at increased risk of psychiatric disorder and suicidal behaviors using data gathered on a New Zealand birth cohort studied to age 21 years.
METHODS: Data were gathered during the course of the Christchurch Health and Development Study, a 21-year longitudinal study of a birth cohort of 1265 children born in Christchurch, New Zealand. At 21 years of age, 1007 sample members were questioned about their sexual orientation and relationships with same-sex partners since the age of 16 years. Twenty-eight subjects (2.8%) were classified as being of gay, lesbian, or bisexual sexual orientation. Over the period from age 14 to 21 years, data were gathered on a range of psychiatric disorders that included major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, conduct disorder, and substance use disorders. Data were also gathered on suicidal ideation and suicide attempts.
RESULTS: **Gay, lesbian, and bisexual young people were at increased risks of major depression **
(odds ratio [OR], 4.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.8-9.3), **generalized anxiety ****disorder **(OR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.2-6.5), **conduct disorder **(OR, 3.8; 95% CI, 1.7-8.7), **nicotine dependence **(OR, 5.0; 95%, CI, 2.3-10.9), other substance abuse and/or dependence (OR, 1.9; 95% CI, 0.9-4.2), **multiple disorders **(OR, 5.9; 95% CI, 2.4-14.8), **suicidal ideation **(OR, 5.4; 95% CI, 2.4-12.2), **and suicide attempts **(OR, 6.2; 95% CI, 2.7-14.3).

CONCLUSIONS: Findings support recent evidence suggesting that gay, lesbian, and bisexual young people are at increased risk of mental health problems, with these associations being particularly evident for measures of suicidal behavior and multiple disorder.

Transgender people want sex changes… Not LGB people… I think the op has some great points…

And most LGBT people find same-sex attraction and homosexual offensive lol…

In my religion (Judaism) lots of branches of Jews refer to those people by the term LGBT…

Now there’s much conflict on how to deal with them… If your Haredi or also known as ultra orthodox you’ll take the position that gays and lesbians need therapy to become straight always…

If your orthodox or conservative you’ll generally believe along the lines of what Catholics believe and encourage celibacy…

But if your a liberal Jew (Reform/Reconstructionist) you’ll believe that LGBT need to be affirmed…

But virtually most branches of Judaism here in the states will call LGBT people by their preferred terminology…

I’ve found that when I dialogue with conservative Muslims, Christians, and Jews; Catholics especially love the terms SSA or homosexual… Usually those two terms are a deal breaker and nothing gets said other than mutual hostility…

I am only saying what i personally believe.
And Leviticus was written by people who stoned adulterers.
This goes against what Christ said on earth.
Remember: “let he who is without sin cast the first stone”
Jesus also said you have to sell ALL your possessions to follow him… Do you own anything?
See, this is the problem that protestants have. If we read only what we want in the Bible with only our own little understanding, putting more importance on the words in red just because the other things may not mesh with our own ideas then we have missed the whole salvation story. If we cannot educate ourselves properly in this matter we should defer to Church authority. It is almost comical your dismissal of Leviticus and acceptance of a phrase Jesus said as some sort of proof of homosexual acceptance and tollerance. Some of Jesus words were written 70-100 years after he died. Leviticus was written by the Levites. Both were dictated by God yet you somehow think the Gospel is more accurate than a book written by a people themselves? Bottom line is ALL of scripture is inspired and accurate. We must educate ourselves as to what the historical and salvific context is.

My point is that the Levites where wrong.
Leviticus 20:10
And the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
And the lord said: Thou shalt not kill
God gave the ten commandments to Moses and said that if they wanted to be the people of god they would have to follow them.

And we are the people of god acording to saint peter.
Peter 2:10
“Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy”

Context context context…Do you not know the historical story of God’s people extending to us? You write off entire points, commands and books of sacred scripture because of a sentence in another part of sacred scripture??? You have some dangerous ignorance of sacred scripture and indeed your own faith.

The vagina can also be injured during sexual intercourse, as can the penis - so what’s your point?

And yes, I can reject it. I cannot check what you are claiming myself without paying money. It is against forum rules on the news forum to post an article that others have to pay to read (as they cannot read it themselves to make their own opinion) so using the same logic I think its unfair for you to say “Yeah, it says it in the book, I’m not gonna post an extract, but you have to go and read it yourself.” As you are the one making the assertions, the onus is on you to provide the proof.
The rectum is at extremely high odds for tearing due to intercourse leading to a rather high transmission rate of HIV.

Old Testament has been superseded, he was just illustrating a point

Just killing is permitted such as executing God’s laws, however the Old Testament is now null and void so yeah

Of course I am not suggesting that. That would be silly. Welcome to the discussion.

Jewish Bible? I was unaware of such a thing.

No Deo, I did not misread your entire post. Nor did I misunderstand the excerpt I quoted and commented on. It was read in the context of your post and then taken out and dealt with on its own merits because it is crucial to the argument you have been trying to build.
The argument I was attempting to make was this: Before we do anything, we must love. Out of our obligation to love comes any and all of our other responsibilities to each other. We may need to exercise those responsibilities in some situations, though not in others, and not always in the same way, but the one obligation that obtains in every situation is the obligation to love. If we act without love, then we act incorrectly, even if we or others believe that we are fulfilling the requirements and the responsibilities that love lays upon us. True correction or chastisement cannot happen without love, therefore, and it seems best to stress the obligation to love first and foremost and then talk about the ways in which we can fulfill that obligation in the various situations with which we are confronted in life.

Melinda’s suggested rules seemed to me to be moving towards putting love at the heart of the debate. Others’ disagreements read, to me, as if they were saying, “No–when you encounter gays, above all you must correct or chastise them.” This seemed to miss the point entirely, and appeared to elevate correction or chastisement in themselves into greater values or imperatives than the love from which true correction and chastisement comes and from which Melinda’s list seemed to spring.

It’s possible that I misread those early comments. But I believe it’s also possible that, when it comes to the issue of homosexuality, people mistake drawing a hard and fast moral line with the necessity of taking an ultra combative stance against all human beings who happen to be homosexual, regardless of the context or the situation or the individuality of that person. Homosexual folks, of course, often have a tendency to do the same with religious folks or socially/politically conservative folks as well.

But it’s that attitude which, it seems to me, informs the comment that someone made that the elephant in the room was sodomy and how horrible it is, the inference being that anal sex was central to the sexual identity of male homosexuals. That was news to me. As a male homosexual, I can tell you that it isn’t, and I’m by far not the only one that feels that way. But reading that comment makes someone like me think, “is that really what folks like that think this conversation is about? Is that really what they think I and others like me are about? Is it even possible to have a conversation with these folks if that’s the first thing they think, or if that’s what they feel is the thing always lurking in the background of all of these threads and conversations?”
I put it to you that what you write is not necessarily cogent, nor cohesive
That may very well be the case, and I appreciate the critique. Sometimes, it’s a miracle if I can put together a coherent sentence. I’ve a feeling you may feel it’s a miracle, too! 😉
and when others pick you up on that lack of cogency and coherency, you then blame them for ‘misreading’ you, or of having taken things out of context.
I’ve a feeling you believe I do that with malicious or calculated intent. I don’t. My arguments seem very clear…to me at least! I’ll try and do better to make them clearer in future.
No you are guilty of exactly what it is you accuse others of.
I appreciate this more than you know, John. I’m often very conscious of when two people in a discussion or an argument get to the point when, even if they’re saying the exact same things, one of them (at least) begins to insist that the other is wrong simply because he or she is convinced that they cannot be right. I’ve fallen into that trap here, with you and with others, and I repent me of it. I apologize for my hypocrisy.
You singled out InSearchofGrace and yet she is one of the most charitable and lucid writers on this entire forum. Shame on you, I say.
Singled out for what? I was just responding to her post, John. I didn’t know that that singled her out for anything. As far as I can gather, ISoG is a really lovely person. I’m sorry if either you or she feel I have failed to give her the basic honor she deserves when conversing with her here.

your psychoanalytic skills aren’t very well-honed.
I hope, Michelle, that at this point in our relationship (such as it is) we both realize that when it comes to psychoanalyzing each other and guessing each other’s motivations, *neither *of us is in possession of very well-honed skills. 😉

I get what you are trying to say but this is not true. I understand your point but we must try to be accurate here. The New fulfills the old. It does not “nullify it”

There is a lack of understanding of the “old testament” on this thread. One only has to read how sacrifices were done in the temple and the placement of the lamp stands to understand the significance and marriage of the old and new.

We are however WAY off topic.

the Tanakh or Jewish Bible… Your old testament essentially…
I know but lets use correct terms here. In fact, earlier in this thread we were discussing how terms and words mean things.

I’m not a very good at hebrew (dyslexia)… My understanding of hebrew is terrible lol… I use english to describe all things Jewish

Ok then use the English for the Jewish scriptures which I can assure you is not “Bible”

But, ultimately we all know what you meant and I am being a tad nitpicky…😉

Bible just means “books” it doesn’t always refer to the Christian books it can mean the Jewish books as well… See Wikipedia for that one 👍

But I digress back to the topic at hand 😃
