I have been debating back and forth if I should be giving 10% to the Catholic church.

i was wondering how your religion feels about this. I know the Catholic church doesn’t reqire it but I have heard from so many how mandy blessings they have recieved from it.

I am a poor girl in college and well I don’t know I struggle pay check to paycheck but I still feel I should give more than a dollar

So how does your religion feelabout tithing 10%?

Generosity and support for those who choose the religious life is very important. But, such support does not have to be in terms of money. Perhaps you can donate your time. Ask your parish priest what you can do. There is always something needing to be done.

Give what you can in terms of money and give what you can in terms of time. 🙂

You must not give because of what blessings you will receive. If you give with that intention, you are on the wrong path.

You should give as much as you possibly can without taking away from what will provide for your necessities. Let us say that perhaps you can spare only one dollar a week and you are not someone who spends $5 on coffee at Starbucks everyday. Then I suggest you give $1.50. The point being, consider what you can afford to do without and give a bit more than that.

Familiarize yourself with Matthew 25:
41 He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. 43 Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. 44 For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”
10% tithing is left over from the old law which with the coming of Jesus as Messiah did away with. For some can afford 25% of their income and some can only dispense with 1%. Give because it delights you and you feel from the bottom of your heart that you must do what you can to support your Church in terms of wealth, talent and time.

God bless you.

The book of Malchi says if you tithe faithfully the windows of heaven will open up and blessings will flow out to you unceasingly. About 20 years ago, I began doing it and they began flowing. The tithe is entirely biblical, and very clear. My philosophy has been, what better use for your money than to give it to God? A new car? New Clothes? Eating out? I don’t think so…Roanoker

Hi,
I agree with all here. My church absolutely encourages at least 10%. My minister says that is a good place to start.
However, it is more important that you are a cheerful giver. If you give because you feel you have to and do it begrudgingly–then IMHO God will not bless you because you are not doing it with the right motives.

I agree with notself about giving your time. Giving your time is actually much harder then money. For whatever reason people seem reluctant to volunteer. I know because I run a ministry in my church which is run on a 100% voluteer basis. Trust me it is VERY HARD to get those volunteers. And the program runs 6 times a year:eek:

My hubby does not like me giving his money(stay at home mom here) to the church , so I give my time. He actually prefers and supports my volunteer work at the church. He doesnt go to church:( YET!!😃 But supports me nonetheless;)

With all due respect, people who struggle from paycheck to paycheck aren’t generally buying new cars, new clothes, or eating out. 🙂

I was a cradle Catholic and have been an Anglican now for years and same in the Anglican church as was when I was Catholic, the 10% tithe was and is not required per say because it is not an issue of Salvation but still to me it is a faith issue. I would like to be able to give 10% to my Anglican church and am currently giving about 6-7%. I donate alot of time and action to the church now as well but my goal is to hit the 10% mark. However i don’t hold it against anyone who doesn’t as well.

How a person of integrity gives a gift

"These five are a person of integrity’s gifts. Which five? A person of integrity gives a gift with a sense of conviction. A person of integrity gives a gift attentively. A person of integrity gives a gift in season. A person of integrity gives a gift with an empathetic heart. A person of integrity gives a gift without adversely affecting himself or others.

If you can afford to give 10% then do or more if you can. The point is to give what you can to provide for Christ Church. If all you can afford to do is invite your priest home for half a tuna sandwich chips and kool aid then thats as good as if you gave millions of dollars, Give from your heart and from the blessing God has given and he will bless you with reward beyond measure.

I know that sound like evangelical prosperity teaching there, I do not necessarily mean with money or card big house etc…

You must make sure that your finances are taken care of it is wrong to give to others if you owe to someone else. We have a responsibility to cloth feed and house ourselves if that is possible.
Do these things and give to the church from your heart what you can.

God does not ‘need’ our money. Why would He? He can put His finger in the middle of the desert and create a river, He does not need our money.

What He does want is to know that we trust Him with every bit of our hearts, minds and souls. Since, for the most part, money is and has been the greatest struggle we have (whether we have too much or too little) this can be one of the areas that we don’t trust God or we don’t think of that being an area of our lives that we think God has any interest in. He wants us to give money to help His church so that we know that God will take care of us even when giving Him what we don’t think we can give.

I am not saying to give your money and expect a return. The whole ‘health and wealth’ issue is vile. I don’t even believe in claiming what I give to the church on my taxes. What I give is not for me to ‘profit’ from. But what I can say is that since I have started giving, all of a sudden I have excess in my bank account and I am not living paycheck to paycheck like I was. I do not give 10% but what I can and I do feel as if God has blessed me for it.

By no means am I rich for it nor would someone looking at me think that I am particularily blessed. My roof leaks and I can’t afford to fix it. I live in a very old mobile home that has an ant problem and the ceiling is caving in in some places with mold in some areas. BUT I have a peace about things. I don’t worry about things because I know that God will take care of me. And it seems that every time I trust Him and give to the church I find a little more peace about my bills and life in general.

My life is not perfect by any means. But with God by my side, hopefully pleased with my efforts to obey Him, it doesn’t seem so bad… 😊 👍

Giving and taking.

We don’t give that much right now, because it’s the college years here, and we have a mortgage and a retired person. So we give what we can.

Also, I have a medical condition that could lead to disability. So I think it’s important to not only look at what you need to live on today, but how you need to get yourself set-up for the future. It would be stupid of us to give the Church money that I may need in the future. “Needs” covers more than food and shelter today. You can’t forget about your future.

And taking. Our pastor too action against some Catholic school parents by cutting financial aid to all but the people who really needed it. Apparently, people who were taking money (my money) from the Church to pay the school’s tuition for their kids, were also buying new cars and taking trips to Disney. It’s one thing to buy new cars and take vacations frequently and not giving more to the Church. It’s another thing to do those things while taking money from the Church. Sheesh!

Future needs are just that-future. They may or may not turn out to be real needs. As far as college expenses are concerned, I want to be there when you stand before the white throne of justice and explain to the Almighty why “college expenses” are more important than His tithes. Roanoker

This is how New Advent defines Tithes. The bold is mine.
Generally defined as "the tenth part of the increase arising from the profits of land and stock, allotted to the clergy for their support or devoted to religious or charitable uses". A more radical definition is "the tenth part of all fruits and profits justly acquired, owed to God in recognition of his supreme dominion over man, and to be paid to the ministers of the church".
There is no requirement that someone who can barely feed themselves or who is saving for advanced training for a career has to provide 10% of a subsistence income. The tithe would apply to moneys that are over and above what is needed to live and save for emergencies.

When someone saves for college and does volunteer service for the Church, one shows their God that they are true and at the same time prepares themselves for an ability to serve their God in both a higher intellectual and material level.

Scripture emphasizes the “first” 10%. Not whatever is leftover. This is why God rejected Cain’s offering-because Cain broughr Him scraps and leftovers and kept out the good stuff. Its 10% of the gross, not the net. And like I said, you can always find rationalizations for not giving it. That’s a copout. God doesn’t do copouts. I’m not being judgemental here, just factual… Roanoker

If you would read New Advent, you would see that before Moses, the tithe was from the spoils of war.

Cain gave the fruit of his fields. Abel gave one of his flock. God prefered the lamb to the grain. It is one of the indications of the sacrifice of the lamb that would be Christ. At least that is my understanding.

Perhaps you can give other Church doctrine that refutes the definition from New Advent.

Do you tithe 10% of your gross income in cash to the Church every year? Just wondering.

According to the public profile, the poster you were responding to isn’t Catholic – and is obviously not posting Catholic teaching. 🙂

Yes, for about 15 years now. If you add in building projects, its 20%. Neither I, or anyone of my family, has yet to go hungry because of it. On the contrary. It is NOT a hardship. Once you begin, its like having income tax withheld-you don’t miss it. And I guarantee you, you will sleep better at night. Look at it this way: God, in His love, gives you 100%. He asks that you, in your love, return 10%. Its as simple as that…Roanoker

Yes, but you are still supporting your family, saving money for the future, education your children, paying a mortgage. You are over 15 years old, so you have not been tithing 10% your whole life. You established yourself in you career. Giving 10% of the top of a good income, i.e. above subsistance level, is giving part of your profit.
