The Government released the 9/11 tapes. Disturbing, really. Nobody knew what was going on , and it was pretty evident we weren’t ready for this. However, I get the feeling the White House had an idea that Al Qaeda would try some kind of an attack on the US at some point.

Here are the tapes, if you’re interested. nytimes.com/interactive/2011/09/08/nyregion/911-tapes.html

These made me cry like a little baby. Of course no one knew what to do - there has never been an attack of this magnitude on American Soil. There just were no playbooks for something like this.

I have nothing but the highest respect for everyone on these tapes and how hard they worked to try to keep people safe.

May God bless them, and give rest to the souls lost on that horrific day.

Some say it was a wake up call.

If it was we have manage to activate the Snooze button. 😦

I’m not so sure about that. 9/11 has definitely affected the mindset of Americans. Whenever any disruption or tragedy occurs, one of our first thoughts is whether it was a act of terrorism. For example, the recent major power outage in the San Diego area prompted official reassurance that it was not work of terrorists. Americans younger than 35 now support the use of torture for national security, which is in sharp contrast to the older generation. Travel via airlines brings restrictions and screening which wouldn’t exist otherwise. The US government has created a massive, convoluted intelligence network to gather and analyze information on person in the US. Those are just some of the changes I can think of, off the top of my head.

As for the anniversary of 9/11, I’ve been listening to recent interviews with first responders, persons in the twin towers, and their families. Its heartbreaking. 😦

911 is a day few people in this world who have a Christian or God fearing heart won’t soon forget. Essentially it was America’s second Pearl Harbor.
The National Geographic and Discovery Channels have been airing documentaries all week. Its heart-wrenching. Eighteen American Jumbo Jets rolled into my Atlantic Canadian city airport. Over 1300 horrified American people disembarked off these planes and escorted to hotels and motels at no cost. Many wound up at the city coliseum. My family was privileged to shelter one American family into our home for three days.
I’m grateful to have a lasting friendship although I wish circumstances were different. I will never forget September 11th, 2001.

What a horrible day 10 yrs ago and what a terrible decade since. With wars and economic decline for so many while the rich and corporations continue to prosper to such a degree.

After the 1993 bombing in the World Trade Center, I think we always thought they would not give up. But I don’t think for one minute that our government had any idea that planes would be flown into buildings. And as far as I ever heard, this was a surprise. Don’t forget, at that time the various agencies were not permitted to share information (thank you Jamie Gorelik.)

Really sad. I lost co-workers. We had an office in the WTC. One of them was a new hire and I spoke to his sister everyday. She kept hoping he would turn up. I hope one day we find out the whole story. I am skeptical of the commission report.

There’s just no shame about turning any national tragedy into a platform for political bull-plop, is there?

Stay classy, San Diego.

I was on my way to work at 6:30AM PST. I like driving in silence for the first 15-20 minutes or so…then I turned on the radio and heard that a plane had crashed into the WTC…I thought “Oh God, those poor people in the plane.”…I then heard that a second plane had crashed and now we think it’s on purpose…not an accident…by the time I got to work, all hell had broken loose. I went into the conference room and turned on the TV and sat there horrified and sick.

We are an office of about 16 people…I was the only one who came to work early…every one else came in late as they had been watching TV…we all sat in the conf. room watching it unfold.

My boss finally came in and told everyone they could go home if they wanted to…right then the towers collapsed…it was shocking as we heard about the Pentagon…no one knew at that time if flight 93 was part of the attack or a casualty unrelated.

Some of us went to the Lebanese restaurant across the street for lunch and watched from there…the owner of the restaurant in days following had threats against him…my office made sure we continued patronizing his restaurant…he eventually had to close down…my small office wasn’t able to sustain his business until the craziness died down.

The New York Times haters on the Forum won’t use the link. They probably will wait to hear it on Fox News. 😦

I was still in high school when it happened. I had a friend who was a conspiracy theory nut-job at the time and she called me at 6am (I’m on the west coast) shouting WE’RE UNDER ATTACK." I was so drowsy and irritated because I didn’t have to be up for another half hour. I told her it was a bad dream and to go back to bed (joking because she knew I didn’t buy into her many conspiracy theories) and she shouted at me to turn on the TV. I did, but I couldn’t find what she was talking about. She was shouting “it’s happened! It’s finally happened!” and I was trying to get her to calm down so she’d tell me what was going on. When she inquired about the tv I just said “I think our satellite is broken or something…same movie is on every channel…” She said “What movie?” I was like “I dunno, Die Hard maybe? It’s some plane crashing into a building. That’s obviously not real…”

Yeah…I was wrong. Once I realized what was going on I shouted for my family to get out of bed and tell me what was happening. My dad was in tears (only time I ever saw that man cry) and my mom was beside herself. We took off for school and I was on the bus when the pentagon got hit. We just sat in classes all day watching the news. By the time I got home my dad was still glued to the TV. See, it was a miracle he wasn’t a part of it. Just 3 or 4 days before he was in the WTC on a business trip to New York. I had a few classmates with family in NYC and relatives that worked in the towers. It was a really emotional day. I remember wishing they would just turn the television off and start a lecture or something because it didn’t seem to be helping these kids to watch it. I also remember wishing that someone would come pick them up so they could be with loved ones. It was just awful.

It made it hit home all the more about how many families WOULDN’T have their daddies coming home…

I was out-of-town preparing for the wedding of one of my daughters. I was 'babysitting"
my then 2 yr old grandson. We were preparing to go find clothes for the children.
I turned the tv on to put a video on for my grandson. He was outside the room and I
was transfixed, as were the other adults in the room, with what we were seeing. They
announced the first plane crashing and then showed the second plane hitting the tower
live! We were so stunned, it took my grandson’s little voice saying, “plane, crash,
fire” to wake us up and for me to stick his “Bob the Builder” video in.
The wedding went on, most of the family and friends from out of town had their flights
cancelled. (Some jumped in their cars and drove down.) The “regrets” we had had,
started calling in that since their plans to be out of town were cancelled, could they come.
So we had just as many show up as had rsvped!
I attended mass from across the street, since we were packed up from there to the
church. It was unbelievable.
Not much I will forget about that day.

Try and catch THE MAN WHO KNEW on PBS’ Frontline. It’s about John O’Neil, an FBI agent and expert on Al Qaeda. He knew but, because of politics within the agencies, he was not utilized. He died in the attack.

When the plane hit, my friend’s nephew was on the 85th floor. He credits a woman who had been through the 1993 attack with saving the lives of the people in his office. Apparently, after they were thrown to the floor, she yelled out “GET OUT. GET OUT NOW!!” It took him an hour to get to the ground level. There a policeman kept yelling, “Keep running, Keep running!” He was three blocks away when the building fell.
