I’m a teenage girl and I know what he’s feeling.

My parents used to force me to go to Mass with them every Sunday until I was about 12. I hated it with a passion. I never felt God’s mercy or grace when I was around my family at Mass. I actually didn’t feel it at all until about a year ago (I’m almost 16). I hated going because I wasn’t feeling anything. They gave up on taking me when I was nearly 13. During my time away, I began to have more appreciation for the church and whatnot. I actually grew closer to church and wanted to go to Mass more after I was away for awhile. Now, it hurts me deeply to miss weekly mass or even not go to confession more than once a month. I changed, so can he, but not by force.

I found that I needed to make my own choice as to whether or not I should go to Mass. I grew in my faith a lot during that time, and he can too. For me, it was making a really awesome confession that brought me back.

Give him a decision. Say “__, it’s your decision whether you want to go to mass or not. You’re almost an adult and I can’t keep making your choices for you. I’d really like it if you went with us.”

If he says yes, awesome. If not, leave him home to think about life. If he’s anything like me, he’ll be sending himself on a guilt trip in a few days.

Good luck!
