Consider very seriously that he may have a personality disorder. It doesn’t mean he is intellectually incapable of moral behavior, but you ought to take it into your mind that you may have the sort of person as a son that if his intellect does not come down on the side of honest personal accomplishment, morality, social compliance, and forging a relationship with others in which he values a sense that he has integrity and can be trusted, there is precious little else in his psychological make-up that will advocate in that direction.–I have not neglected him in favor of the others although I will admit I find him more difficult to relate to.
–He will take everything from you and it is never enough. Over all he received more attention than any of his four siblings.
–There is very little in his upbringing to easily explain this.
You may also have an honest-to-goodness sociopath on your hands. If you do, you may as well try to raise a shark as if he were a dolphin and then be surprised when he still turns out to be a shark*. You and I know that the best animal trainer in the world cannot make up for that kind of difference. Be very careful, and do get professional advice about how to handle him.
*This is only an analogy to make the point that some people, if raised in a way that is totally suitable for everyone else, can be fully expected to respond in a totally different way. I am not saying that your son is not fully a human being, nor that he is criminally insane. I am saying that you may be in over your head and that you will almost certainly not get the desired results in family life by “treating him the same as everyone else”. Be aware of what you might be dealing with, and how to proceed. I don’t just mean getting counseling. I mean finding someone who specializes in dealing with sociopathic personalities. If your son is not a sociopath, they will also know a) how to tell the difference and b) what the psychological make-up he does have will determine in terms of the kind of cause-and-effect you can expect from him that is different than his siblings.
