Hello, CAF friends,

My 1962 Missal just arrived the other day, and I’m wondering: there is a liturgical calendar at the front which has a listing for each day. Some are in a bold font, and others are bold with all capital letters. Does anyone know, are these feasts vs. solemneties or something? And if one of those falls on a Sunday, would we observe that day in place of the usual nth Sunday after Pentecost or whatever? I’m wondering because I have recently taken on the job as organist for the TLM, and I’d like to program the hymns according to the readings for the day.

Thanks in advance and God bless,
CarrieH

The bold with capital letters represents “First Class” feasts/days and the bold represents “Second Class” feasts/days.

First Class feast take precedence over all Sundays except those of Advent and Lent (including Passiontide), Easter, Sunday after Easter (Low Sunday) and Pentecost. Thus, if a “First Class” feast coincides with any other Sunday, the feast will be celebrated and the Sunday will be commemorated (Collect, Secret and Postcommunion of the Sunday will be said after that of the feast)

However,
  • for first Class feasts of the Lord e.g. Precious Blood, Nativity, etc.), the Sunday is NOT commemorated.
  • the Immaculate Conception takes precedence over a Sunday of Advent
  • All Souls(technically not a feast) is never celebrated on a Sunday.
For Second Class feasts falling on Sundays
  • those of the Lord (e.g. Holy Cross) can replace a Sunday other than those listed previously. In this case also, the Sunday is not commemorated.
-those of the saints do not replace the Sunday and are *usually *commemorated (Collect, Secret and Postcommunion of the saint after that of the Sunday)

Carrie -
I’ll leave the answer to that to those who can better answer it.

I will add to your thread and ask something - I had lost my old St. Joseph’s Daily Missal and have been pricing them (new). Why do they put such a high price on them? Are the updated vernacular missals as pricey?
