1997 Harper speech resurfaces mid-campaign
Just in time to give his political foes ammunition to use during Thursday’s leaders debate in Vancouver, an eight-year-old speech has resurfaced, threatening to trip up Conservative Leader Stephen Harper…

Harper refers to Canada as a “Northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term.” He also tells the Americans “your country, and particularly your conservative movement, is a light and an inspiration to people in this country and across the world”…

“The NDP could be described as basically a party of liberal Democrats, but it’s actually worse than that, I have to say. And forgive me jesting again, but the NDP is kind of proof that the Devil lives and interferes in the affairs of men,” said Harper in his speech.

I encourage American posters to read the Full text of speech . It gives a very informative synopsis of Canadian politics. Keep in mind that it is eight years old. One comparison is that Canadian politics currently resembles American politics before the Civil War.
