As many as 10 were killed.](http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Labor-Day-Violence-New-York-City-shootings-129268118.html)

Three people were killed and two police officers were wounded in a shooting a few blocks from the annual West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn, capping a violent holiday weekend in which nearly 70 people were injured by gunfire.

Updated statistics obtained by NBC New York on Tuesday show that at least 67 people were shot between 12 a.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Monday. That includes nine on Friday, 10 on Saturday, 33 on Sunday and 15 on Monday.

Preliminary numbers indicate as many as 10 were killed.

I strongly feel that a discussion of Gun Control is a political issue that does no belong in a religious forum. Like it or not, we all have a God given right of self defense by any means possible.
A Jesuit priest once told me that outlawing evil will not rid the world of it.

I wonder how many of these deaths and injuries could have been prevented if we had stronger gun control laws in this country?
This country? This is in New York, I doubt Oklahoma’s gun control laws had anything to do with it. You guys are big boys, handle your own gun control laws.

It’s not just NY. Another gun loving patriot fails to stop shooting, this time in Nevada. So much for carrying a weapon to act as a deterrent against those pulling out a gun on innocent people.

This is a sad story, but I have to point out that not only did this shooter use an “assault” weapon, that we’re supposed to believe isn’t actually dangerous, but this assault rifle was too intimidating for a gun carrying American to face to prevent the massacre.

I wonder how many of these violent thugs would have been stopped earlier if there were looser gun controls and more people with concealed carry permits?

Your point assumes that criminals will obey stronger gun laws. :rotfl:

Hey don’t worry. We had Mayor Bloomberg down here in Virginia trying to push tight gun show laws. Governor McDonnell told him to get out and go back to New York and mind his own business.

I was a Corpsman in the Navy. I’ve faced shooters with assault weapons who were actually trained to use them. Its not the size of the weapon, its the skill and calm of the user that wins the day. The only issue with most people who carry is, they get their permit and weapon, but don’t spend the time and money to develop their skill with it. You can’t just buy a gun and think you’ll shoot under pressure like Jose Whales.

Every citizen has a Constitutional right (and therefore a duty) to protect themselves from violent offenders. You have no Constitutional right to police protection. None, nada, zero, zip, niente. If your home is invaded by a couple of thugs and you call 911 in time, but they don’t arrive until after they’ve killed your son, gang raped your daughter and wife, and left you for dead, you cannnot sue them for being late. If someone invades my home this way, I would tell them to send police, an ambulance, and the coroner.

That’s Nevada’s business. You worry about taking NY’ers guns away from them and leave everyone else out of it.

Someone lied to you.
but this assault rifle was too intimidating for a gun carrying American to face to prevent the massacre.
As someone whose looked down the barrel of a handgun at point blank range, let me be the first to tell you that the size of the gun aimed at you doesn’t mean a thing. They are all intimidating when they are pointed at you.

Sad how people can’t keep their nose out of other peoples business like that.

Please note; “assault weapon” is a political term that means very little. Everything from my 10-22 Ruger .22 rifle to a replica of the original 1862 Henry rifle to an AK47 are all assault weapons.

The legal AK47 is a semi automatic rifle of poor to fair accuracy shooting a 7.62x39 round that has low muzzle velocity and low impact velocity which prevents fragmentation. It’s main claim to fame is that it goes boom everytime you pull the trigger and its fairly cheap.

As for facing one, I would have been much more afraid of the standard pump action shotgun in that small of area.

Looser gun controls? And, have even more crazies with handguns in their pockets? We’re talking about New York, NY, not Horseapples, VA.

If criminals won’t obey the gun laws, do you think they give a rat’s a** about someone else carrying a gun, whether it’s a West Indian or a overweight middle aged white man? The mentality of the populace is entirely different. There would be shootouts left and right by folks who aren’t “criminals.” Also consider the occasion - an annual parade with a record of violence.

.
Perhaps you haven’t noticed - the crazies and the criminals already have guns. Gun laws only work with law abiding citizens.

Because that person can kill them, the people without a weapon are all potential victims.

In a survey of criminals (FELONS IN PRISON), Professors James D. Wright and Peter Rossi of the Social and Demographic Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts conducted a study paid for by the U.S. Department of Justice. (Professor Rossi was a former President of the American Sociological Association.) The researchers interviewed 1,874 imprisoned felons in ten states.

88% of the criminals surveyed by Wright and Rossi agreed with the statement that, “A criminal who wants a handgun is going to get one.” (these felons are not obeying the gun laws and the anti gun politicians cannot figure this out!)

81% of interviewees agreed that a “smart criminal” will try to determine if a potential victim is armed.

74% indicated that burglars avoided occupied dwellings, because of fear of being shot.

**57% said that most criminals feared armed citizens more than the police. **

I do. I think a criminal will think twice about getting his head blown off if he knows people have the potential to shoot first. Either that or they’ll migrate to an area with more gun laws and the pickings are easy.

We posted at the same time. 🙂
Good post!

  1. We’re talking about New York City, not Podunk.
  2. The “honest” citizens are going to shoot first? The Big Apple isn’t the OK Corral. 😉
Read the news article. Those shooters weren’t looking for “easy pickings.” They were in some sort of fued and a lot of people got in the way. They even shot at the cops and there was a shootout with them.

BTW, shooters don’t “think twice” and they don’t migrate elsewhere. NYC or Philly or DC or Boston or Chicago is their turf and they’re not intimidated by overweight middle aged white men who might be carrying a gun - illegally BTW in NYC and who fancy themselves as heroes. LOL!

There’s a lot of “if’s” in there; suppose your asleep and you get caught off guard?? No weapon is going to keep you from being saved; suppose your gun jams or misfires? Again, nothing is going to save you from the bad guys. Are you going to sue the manufactuer of the gun? or if they break into your house while your asleep and rob and murder you and/or your family? Is your estate going to sue 911?

There’s too many varibles involved to really justify your position.

NYC has some of the strongest gun control laws in the nation, as did DC when it was the murder capital of the world. Oddly enough, it seems that the criminals ignored the law.

While it is true that sometimes guns do not help in a situation, they do help in a lot of situations. For example, I live in a rural area. If both police officers were at the other end of their territory and someone broke into my house, it could take them 1/2 hour or more just to drive to our house. Not everyone in the US lives within a few minutes of police help
