Hello Nelka,
These proverbs are not meant to be purely cyclical. It is never an unending chain. It is simply meant to highlight the gravity of the situation and the disorder of the inclination to return to sin. Think back to Christ’s encounter with the canaanite woman, “She said, ‘Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.’” (Mt 15:27) St. Bernard of Clairvaux said there are two feet of Christ with which we walk the Way of Salvation, find the Truth and live the Life. These are justice and mercy. When we find that we cling too strongly to one, we must throw ourselves at the other so that we may come to balance upon both equally in time and move foreward on the path of God.
It seems you truly recognize the gravity of sin. By this very fact, you have been given grace to see the error of your ways. We do not overcome sin upon our own power. God will work in your life in his own time if you are persistent in your attempt to lift yourself out from the depths. Don’t lose hope.
God Bless,
Br. Ben, CRM
