Twenty Catholic leaders–including the presidents of Catholic Relief Services, Catholic Charities USA, the National Catholic Educational Association, the University of Notre Dame, Catholic University of America, and the Knights of Columbus–have signed a statement calling for the repeal of the mandate that would compel all private insurers to provide coverage for free contraception and sterilization.

I am with these Catholic leaders. I am also calling for a repeal of the HHS contraception mandate.

“That is why we have raised objections to a rule issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services forcing almost all private health plans to cover sterilization procedures and contraceptive drugs, including drugs that may cause an early abortion.” It’s ironic that many Catholic social service organizations supported passage of universal health care, while opposing the inclusion of abortion as a mandatory coverage.

But in a centralized health care system, it will be the HHS bureaucracy that gets to decide about such matters. Kathleen Sebelius and her agency makes the rules. It seems to be forgotten that after debating loudly over the passage of particular laws, once laws are passed, we turn over the drafting of regulation and enforcement of the details to agencies such as the HHS. You can vote your congressman out of office. You cant vote out the bureaucrats.
