That doesn’t really mean anything. Those are members. They aren’t the church itself.
I guess that is where we differ. Catholics believe they are The Church. It is the people that make up the Church. That is why we say the Catholic Church is made up of sinners. You can`t separate the Catholic Church from Catholics. Of course, there are some who do not practice the Catholic faith who still call themselves Catholic.

Sincerely,

Oh, sure. Catholic literally means “Universal” so that’s understandeable. It’s a religion meant to universally cover all people.

Isaac is correct in what he says. The LDS church never encourages shunning. Rather, it encourages love and fellowship. The family in question were not living their religion but rather showing human imperfection in making the decisions that they made. However, catholics have also shunned family members who have joined the mormons. People are not perfect and full of human weakness.
There is a form of shunning that is supported by the Church, it is called Disfellowship. It is used formally and members use it as a basis to justify there own infomal actions. My sister was Disfellowshiped and may be on her way to Excommunication. I have family that only speak to me when I speak directly to them and then they get away as quickly as they can so as not to “catch” my non-belief.

Let’s put the shoe on the other foot. What if a daughter or son left the Catholic church and became LDS? What would people do who are Catholic on this forum do? Would they shun? Also remember they will show up at Thanksgiving, Christmas, a new baby, and other such time and start injecting Mormon theology into the family environment by sultle statements such as: Well free agency allows me to …

My own view is that a certain amount of shunning must occur inorder for family harmony to occur.

Any thoughts?

Disfellowshipment is a form of Church discipline. Every church must have some way of disciplining its members who transgress or step out of the line. It is a less severe form of discipline that excommunication.
It is used formally and members use it as a basis to justify there own infomal actions.
Disfellowshipment is not an exercise in “shunning” people. Usually Church members are not aware when someone is disfellowshipped (unless he/she chooses to reveal it to them). A disfellowshipped person is encouraged to attend Church, and participate in all Church activities. But they are restricted in some of the things they can do, such as pray in Church or partake of the sacrament, until their repentance is complete and the restrictions are lifted. But no one need ever know that they are “disfellowshipped” that they should want to “shun” them. Even excommunication is not an exercise in shunning people, never mind about disfellowshipment.
My sister was Disfellowshiped and may be on her way to Excommunication.
Disfellowshipment is not a “prelude” to excommunication. It is a lesser from of discipline than excommunication. It shows how little you understand about the Church and how it functions.
I have family that only speak to me when I speak directly to them and then they get away as quickly as they can so as not to “catch” my non-belief.
What is your “unbelief”? You haven’t told us what that is. But I very much doubt what you say is true. My guess is that you drive them away from you because you want to hoist your ideas on them, as you try to do here. So they get fed up with your smug and self-righteous attitude and want to get away. I don’t blame them. I suggest you first take the beam out of your own eye, and then try to take the mote out of your brother’s eye.

The fact that his screen name is “nowcatholic” should give you a clue as to what his Mormon relatives find objectionable.

Am I the only one that’s laughing at the irony here?

We have family, uncles, aunts, brothers, and even sisters and cousins of other faiths.

The family that is JW’s left the Catholic Church because the father was an alcoholic and they blamed the church.

We still invite them to b-b-qs and other family functions. They choose to “shun” us.

We have never shut our door on anyone, family or not. We try to see Jesus in everyone. For some it is a little harder. My uncle would not attend his fathers funeral because his father was Catholic. It hurt all of us. What kind of religion keeps you from family?

I can only tell you what my wife’s Catholic family did when my wife converted to Mormonism. They attended our wedding reception. They welcomed us at family gatherings. All her Catholic relatives (even the very Catholic ones) accept her without question.

I had Jehovah Witness great aunts. Most of the rest of the family was Protestant. I don’t know when they converted, but they often came to our family reunions. We could always plan on having copies of the Watchtower on our windshields when we left, but everyone loved to see these two great aunts. We went out of our way to visit them when we went to California. The fact they became Jehovah Witnesses did nothing to tear apart the family relations with them. On the other hand, I wonder how our great aunts would have treated us if they had converted us to the Jehovah Witness religion and then we left it.

Actually, I am a she and I choose not to respond to “Z” or debate with him. He only reads what he wants he already believs and apparently never lived in small-town Mormanville. I only know what I know based on my own experiance.

People oftne dont understand the full meaning of the term Catholic… It means the Church is present in it’s entirety whenever any part of it meets. So when the local parish holds Sunday Mass, the CATHOLIC CHURCH in it’s fullness is meeting.

The same is True of the Holy Eastern Orthodox Church. When it serves the Divine Liturgy it is THE CHURCH that is serving it, not a part of it or something lesser .

Protestant Churches are not Catholic in the theological sense. They ahve no theory of the mystical nature of the Church. To them it is just a building where they meet.

i thought the book Under the Banner of HEaven was a good one for learning about the history of the Mormon church (or ecclessial community as the Catholic Church would call it). IT was a real eye-opener for me…

Mormonism is a dangerous cult… I believe Joseph Smith was a sociopath.

And that’s waht the building of the church is when one is Protestant. The Real Presence is not there.

Just a thought about all of this with the members being the church. It sounds wonderful in theory, but think about it. If all members decided to support a new idea, would that make it new doctrine? Would that mean that the church changes to hold what the members want it to. I think that the difference in idea here is that mormons see the church as separate. No matter what the members are like, the church and it’s beliefs are the same. The church teaches love and kindness to all regardless of what the members do. I think, if you think about, Catholicism is much the same. Do you calm that if some one in your congregation hit an innocent child that because they are part of the church, your church believes that it is right? Just a thought.

We don’t believe anything of the sort. The poster was not claiming that the members determine doctrine. His post had nothing to do with doctrine.

I am Eastern Orthodox Btw, but that is Catholic enough for this thread.

The Church is the mystical Body of Christ. It does not err. Humans err all the time. The Church in fact is made up of sinners. The Church over time is infallible as it is guided by the Holy Spirit sent to it on the day of Pentecost. It has guarded and protected the deposit of faith since that day.

Mormonism is not part of the Christian Church but is a different unrelated religion even though they use some Christian sounding terms and pose as if they were Christians in order to confuse nominal converts.

Mormonism is the only form of true Christianity. Your version of Christianity is apostate. It is a different and unrelated religion to the true Christianity. It is not the Christianity that Jesus established. It uses Christian sounding terms to make it look like true Christianity; but in reality it is false and dead religion, and the opposite of true Chritianity.

  1. Montanus and his companions represented a revival of the apocalyptic spirit and announced the forthcoming end of the world. The Lord was about to return, and the new Jerusalem would be set up in the vicinity of the town of Pepuza in Phrygia. As preparation for the end of all things they purified themselves and cut themselves loose from their attachments to society. The Phrygians, as they were frequently called, fasted longer and more elaborately than other Christians and discouraged marriage.

  1. Called by its followers “the New Prophecy”, this movement is known to us as Montanism after its founder Montanus, a convert to Christianity. Around the year 170 he began to proclaim to his fellow believers that he was a prophet, that he was the very mouthpiece of that Spirit which the Lord had promised would “teach all things and guide into all truth” (John 14:26; 16:13). Montanus was soon joined by two women, Priscilla and Maximilla who like him delivered oracles in a state of ecstacy, speaking not in their own persons but in that of the Holy Spirit.
Montanism- , apocalyptic movement of the 2d cent. It arose in Phrygia (c.172) under the leadership of a certain Montanus and two female prophets, Prisca and Maximillia, whose entranced utterances were deemed oracles of the Holy Spirit. They had an immediate expectation of Judgment Day, and they encouraged ecstatic prophesying and strict asceticism.
They believed that a Christian fallen from grace could never be redeemed. Prisca claimed that Christ had appeared to her in female form. When she was excommunicated, she exclaimed “I am driven away like the wolf from the sheep. I am no wolf: I am word and spirit and power.”

The belief that the prophecies of the Montanists superseded the doctrines proclaimed by the Apostles
