I could respond to that by calling Catholicism a “cult;” but then I would reduce myself to your level of intelligence competence. I prefer not to get involved in mud-slinging, which is what people like you seem to be fond of doing. I prefer to get involved in real intelligent discussion—something that you are obviously incapable of doing.
lol, you are pretty darn funny Zerinus, if not hypocritical.

Ok… but I did go to a LDS site…

So, I’ll ask you:

(Since the question before was ‘wrong’) - Why is the book called ‘the Book of Mormon’, since Joseph Smith was your founder?
Joseph Smith was not its “founder”. Joseph Smith was its translator. He translated it from an ancient record by the gift and power of God. The book was called the Book of Mormon because its principle author was someone by the name of Mormon. If you really want to know the answer to these questions, I suggest you go and read the book, instead of asking such dull and unintelligent questions about it.

. I think very few people are damned to hell, which makes me wary of Catholicism because it seems to damn everyone who isn’t a member by the time they die.
I can understand why you believe that… I sometimes find myself feeling the same way. However, Jesus tells us that the road to eternal life is narrow and there are few who find it. Also, it is difficult for any of us to know the TRUE state of a person’s soul. Some people look, on the outside, to be the very model of Christianity… and yet, Jesus said to watch out when people speak highly of you… (etc)… It seems the prophets were always being persecuted and many were even killed. Jesus himself was murdered in large part due to the religious leaders of his day… Jesus foretold that we Christians would be persecuted, excluded (for doing right) and hated… I know a lot of :“Christians” who love Jesus as long as it is comfortable to do so… I am one, sad to say, although i do catch myself… and try to correct myself… Anyway, if you read the New Testament and accept Jesus’ words as being from God (and the rest of the NT), you can’t help but come to believe that getting into Heaven (avoiding Hell) is no easy task… It means choosing Jesus when it would be so much easier to just… well, do what seems right “in [our] own eyes”…
, I believe that people damn themselves.
Very true…

Since when did you become the self-appointed board admin?

Looks like mud-slinging to me…

Oooh! Look! Testimony and mud-slinging in the same paragraph! What a spiritual discussion we are having!

Hello Isaac,

The list of 20 truths is accurate. I spent a good year and a lot of time researching and reading, comparing “sides”, though I never new of this website you posted. I started with one question and that one question lead me to many more questions. The apologetic side fell flat many times to me. Often there is not a direct answer to a question, but side tracks that deflect and deny but do not answer.
Thank you for bringing us back on topic. 🙂
The exmormons who have gone atheist (I was one of them) will always answer that there is no such thing as truth. What is truth? And for who? I finally asked, is the statement “there is no such thing as truth” a true statement?
Good point. 😃
Other religions are not mormonism. There is nothing in mormonism that prepares you to understand anything but mormonism. Not one thing. Of course the same can be said of any religion, but it something that I think is important to understand as you start your journey to a new life.
Be careful of terminology, as the same word in mormonism does not have the same meaning in mainstream Christianity. For Catholicism in particular, I found the Catholic dictionary at newadvent.org extremely useful.
Best wishes,
Rebecca
Thank you for your honesty and kind words. I’m rather glad that I got out of the mud-slinging contest a couple of years ago. It becomes a rather nasty mess. I can’t say I don’t slip back in it on occasion, but I do try and get out as fast as possible.

I am sure to you it would be.
Zerinus,

So young and yet so bitter!

Knock it off a little.

When all these great people freely choose to leave a sect such as yours, well, don’t take it personally. They are just blazing a trail for you to follow soon.

I don’t think that I it is ever a question of people freely choosing to leave a ‘sect’. I think it has to do with people leaving christianity or with christians window shopping for a church that best suits their needs at a given moment. I do believe that CS Lewis wrote about this in his book The Screwtape Letters. All faiths loose and gain members. At times I feel like churches are like baseball teams trading members at random.

The Catholic Church is no different. Sure, this is a catholic board but lets face it, many catholics have left their faith for ‘brighter’ pastures. And that is unfortunate. As long as people view their church as a baseball team, well, voluntary trades will be made.

If you look at the posters on this non-catholic forum, you will find that much mud slinging is done by the catholic members. Why? I have no idea.

To me it is just strange that there are a few catholics on this forum who feel it important to down other christian faiths. And yet, I have not read a single negative post by mormons who post on this forum about the catholic faith. Mostly they are defending their faith and not attacking other faiths.

And I think that that says a lot. I am no fan of mudslinging. It gets a person nothing except a dirty face.

Mormons are not christian. Christians believe in 1 God, we believe in the trinity. Do mormons consider jehovah’s witnesses christians? If you go to a baptist or reformed forum you will see them arguing against catholocism. That is their right. If you disagree with someone’s belief it’s okay to tell them that. The Book of Mormon calls the catholic church the devil’s church, is that FAIR?

I think that many mormons do consider them to be christian. I have never heard a mormon call another christian faith ‘not christian’. I don’t know much about them but if they shun family members as an organization commandment, then I would question their christianity in that sense.

Mormons are not christian.
Mormons are Christians. I think that you are not a Christian.
Christians believe in 1 God, we believe in the trinity.
Only apostate Christians believe in what you call the Trinity. True Christians know better.

We respect whatever people choose to call themselves. If they wan to call themselves Christian, we respect that, and call them by whatever title they want to be called.
If you go to a baptist or reformed forum you will see them arguing against catholocism.
And that proves what? Lots of people go all over the place and argue against Mormonism.

The Book of Mormon does not. I suggest you stick to commenting on what you know about and understand, rather than what you don’t know anything about.

I think the discussion has a tendancy to get WAY off track. The bottom line is that by concentrating on doctrinal diffrences and our own beliefs we widen the chasm and close the door to honset dialogue.
I was raised LDS, my Great-Grandfather on father’s side was sent by Brigam Young to settle in northern Arizona. My maternal grandfather grew up in Pima Arizona and was a playmate of Spencer Kimble.
No one who has not walked in shoes of a Life-long Mormon that starts to question their faith can truly understand the dilema that it causes. Not only are suddenly cut off from an entire social network you are often faced with shuninng from your own family.
I feel no hostility to Mormons. In my discussions with my family and few LDS friends I try to steer conversations towards our common beliefs and only give RCC Doctrine to those who ask. I try to use info. that will bring us closer together rather than arguing the pointless.
My advice to anyone who seeks the truth? Read John 3:16 first, read and compare doctrine, LDS and RCC, return to John 3:16, read the bible, return to John 3:16.
Christ be with you in your faith Journey.

It is called fighting against heresy. The True Church has been fighting heresy for 2000 years. Read the Early Church Fathers. They spent much of their time writing very forcefully against the heresies of their day. Mormonism is one of the most evil heresies of our day and a rehash of many of the heresies of times past. It is the duty of every Christian to speak out against it.

Paul

Doesn’t the Bible exist because the heresies of the day required a definitive and authoritative text?

Sorry C/A folks, I have nothing constructive to add and nothing better to do at the moment than call out ridiculous and contradictory statements like the above. Keep up the good work, Z. 👍

You made a good point here. However, I must write that any mormon who shuns their family member for joining another faith is not living their religion. And as is seen in your post, family members have not shun you.

Shunning happens across the board since people are limited and imperfect. I have known mormon converts who have been shunned by protestant and catholic relatives, not to mention friends. Intolerance is a sickness that needs to be avoided if a christian life is to be followed.

That is absolutely correct. To shun a family member for joining another religion is a complete counterculture to the LDS way of thinking. What often happens is that those who leave the LDS Church and join another religion, tend to distance themselves from their own families, and from their former friends and associates in the LDS Church, and make them feel unwelcome; and then they interpret that as being shunned by them. Look at the hatred, venom, and rancor being spewed out by Mormon apostates on this board. It is obvious that they don’t want to have any associations with their former Mormon associates (or family members for that matter), and would make them feel unwelcome if they did. It is not a case of being shunned by their families; they are shunning their families.
