Assuming only 1.5% or 4% of people are using NFP you probably have something to worry about, but like manualman said we should assume the best of people. The problem is not how many kids they have, its how they have decided to go about it. There is also a lot more to how many kids a family can provide for other than financial means. In other words don’t get pissed off because a couple only has 1 or 2 kids. Get pissed off if they tell you they are using contraception.
Several comments:

Why would one be discussing birth control with someone who isn’t their spouse or doctor?

How many children a couple has - as well as their reasons - are not your concern. Unless the couple specifically asks for your advice, it would be considered unwelcome.

You would be surprised when it comes up.

This is pretty much what I said…

My point is, the church lacks any kind of organization and consistency in its teachings.
Why should I care; if I can line right up behind anyone of Satan’s minions and take communion right out of the Bishop’s hands. I would like to have a large family, but you have to be careful how many kids you have. As God did not give everyone the gifts and abilities to take care of their kids. Did you read the story that some woman posted on here earlier this year about being pregnant with her 9nth child? 3 of the 8 she has now are special needs. Trust me, I want to cooperate with the teaching; but my faith just isn’t there; my own lessons in life have taught me that more kids means more future child support payments.
That being said, most Gf’s I had growing up when I was out of the church that where on ABC gained nasty weight and where emotionally nasty It wasn’t healthy at all. It was very terrible on their body, mind and emotions.

👍 Cheers!

Judas took communion straight from Jesus’ own hand. Shall we reject him too?

I’d like the church to be populated only be perfect people too, but utopianism doesn’t work on humans.

Are you promoting ABC?
Hell no
Define “need.”

And since you seem to be an authoritative voice on the issue, is it okay with you if I just “want” to have more children and do so?
There is no need to to have 12 children since it is probable all will make it to adulthood and there is no need for strong backs for manual labor like agriculture plus there are retirement programs to support you in your old age instead of your children.
My best friend and godmother is one of 13. I guess I should let her know that there is “no need” for her existence. I’m glad her mom disagreed, otherwise I might not have had such an awesome sponsor to bring me into the Church.
 I never suggested it was bad, merely that there is no longer a need for that many like there once was.

LIke usual, the thread got hijacked.

The original statement in this thread that a poll suggested 98% of catholics use some form of contraception.

I believe it and gave reasons as to why I believe it.

I wasn’t born yesterday. A large portion (not ALL) of families that are catholic
are using contraception. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

If a Large portion (again, Not ALL) were NOT USING contraception, then there would definitely be MORE families with over 6 kids. Where I live, this is as common as hen’s teeth.

🙂

And as most have also said, the statistics appear to refer to those who have “used” contraception, not actively using contraception. Major difference. This includes converts who weren’t not religiously prohibited from using contraception prior to entry.

1% is too high, of course. However, you are making characterizations based off of personal opinion and annoyance. None of us has actual numbers, and should be more worried about whether we as individuals are obeying the Church. As I said, we don’t go to Heaven or Hell as a group - we are each judged inidividually, and no matter how much song and dance we give about short confession lines or bad music at Church as a defense of our own insubordination will matter to the Lord.

One thing I will never understand is why the people of CAF are so concerned over what a married couple does in the privacy of their own bedrooms…

Yes, it’s quite unseemly and prurient. I don’t understand it either. 🤷

I mean, I understand it’s considered a sin and all, but don’t people have better things to do rather than obsess over how many kids other families have and what type of birth control they use when they have sex??

I see way more angry and hostile discussions here about this than I do about abortion or adultery. How very bizarre…

I provided stats and polls that show something around 70% of American Catholics want the Church to reverse its teaching on contraception. Considering something like only 30% of American’s attend church every weekend and a similar number believe in True Presence this is not surprising.

As for the keep out of the bedroom folks, it would be easier to stay out if we were not constantly bombarded day in and day out with images and text in the media regarding:

-how to improve our sex lives
-men and women dressed (or undressed) to appeal to our sexual emotions in order to get us to buy products
-explicit conversations about people’s sex lives who decide not to keep their sex lives to themselves
-commercials on the next great sex item
-a culture of divorce that stretches out and touches everyone alive in some way either directly in their family, through their extended family, or friends.
-jokes about masturbation, use of women, contraceptives that we get to hear that put these things in the light that everyone does it and they are ok.

The problem is America is just one big bedroom that we are all in whether we want to be or not.

Because birth control is against the church’s teachings. (artificial)

just like abortion, pregnancy happens “in the privacy of the bedroom”
so should we not be concerned about abortion?

totally missed my point

oh ? did I? perhaps you missed mine.🙂
Nope.

If you need me to spell it out for you, then you did miss my point:

Abortion is murder. It involves another innocent human being, and in the US people somehow have the “right” to kill that human being. We have a duty to God and to humanity to protect innocent lives. It SHOULD infuriate us that children are being slaughtered. We SHOULD speak out against it in justified anger and protest.

You can’t compare a married couple’s choice of birth control to abortion - not even the Church puts the 2 at the same level.

Unlike murder, the number of children a couple has and how they went about getting that number, is between themselves and God. Why people here are so obsessed over something that is extremely private and absolutely none of their business…?? That’s the mystery.

newsflash. some forms of artificial birth control are considered
abortificiant.
including the Pill.

As ignorant as you think I may be, this is not a “news flash.” I’m quite aware of how hormonal birth control works, as is just about everyone else on this website.

Perhaps you weren’t aware that EVEN taking abortificiant contraception still isn’t as grave as an elective abortion in the eyes of the Church.

But that’s beside the point. If what truly infuriates you so much about what other families do in the bedroom is the fact that they may be using ABORTIFICIANT birth control, then I would specify that it’s the abortion part of it that gets you so upset and makes you feel like it is your personal business. In which case, perhaps you should start a thread about abortion.

Contraception can be anything from coitus interruptus to abortificiant birth control.

this thread was orginally about what percentage of catholics in a poll admited to using contraception.
the poll said 98%.
Many people on this thread disagreed, saying the number was way too high.

I agree with the poll, and attempted to BACK UP my opinion with what I observe in my parish and with people I converse with.

You were the one stating people on CAF sure seemed to be concerned with what people do in the “privacy of thier bedroom”

So now who is ignorant?

i wonder if it would ever be possible to disagree on here without being ganged up on?
probably not.
