VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday brought 22 Catholic churchmen into the elite club of cardinals who will elect his successor, cementing the Italian majority in a future conclave but also giving New York’s garrulous archbishop a position of prominence.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan emerged as something of the star of the consistory, delivering a highly praised speech on spreading the faith and mentioned in some Italian media as an improbable “papabile,” or having the qualities of a future pope.

An elite club? I guess they will be learning the secret handshake so that they can enter the awesome treehouse where all the top secret meetings are held.

:rotfl:

Cardinal Dolan:“What’s the password?”

Mystery Man: “Credo in unum Deum!”

Cardinal Dolan: "Come on in, Papa Benedicte!

God Bless them all. A special prayer for Timothy Cardinal Dolan since he is my Archbishop in NYC.

Axios! Axios! Axios!

As a New Yorker, I too was very pleased to see Timothy Cardinal Dolan receive the red biretta.

As an Eastern Catholic, I was also pleased to see George Cardinal Alencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church in India, and Lucian Cardinal Muresan, Major Archbishop and head of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church be so honored.

We pray that all 22 of these servants of God faithfully protect Christ’s Church with wisdom, grace, humility and pureness of heart. Amen!

Our assoc pastor repeated something the Pope must have said this week. It went something like, “Wearing this red doesn’t make you part of some club, it symbolizes your willingness to shed your blood for your flock.”

It’s irritating the media refers to it in purely human and/ or political terms. One comment was that the Pope chooses people who “agree” with him on the issues. They forget that these men should agree with 2000 years of teaching, not one human person.

Irritating, but not surprising. They don’t even bother to find out about things they don’t understand.

Irritating, perhaps, but I actually take it as a high compliment for the Catholic Church. These blessed men serve the Lord, protecting the True Faith, and are not willing to compromise on teaching. That is what their vocation demands and what Christ had expected of his Apostles and their successors as He concluded His earthly ministry, entrusting them (Peter as the first) with His Church.

The only reason why the press portrays this as such is because they do not like the message!

I’m with you. He’s from the St. Louis area, so for all of us here, he’s the local boy. A very down to earth man, I think he’s a good addition to the college of cardinals. Although, I’m not sure how his little joke about Cardinal Red played in Vatican city – I don’t think most of them saw a connection between the St. Louis Cardinals and the College of Cardinals. No harm was meant, though.

I proffer that it is not what they don’t understand, but it is what they do not want to understand.

I pray that all of these new Cardinals are imbued with special holiness, and that they all blessed with heroic virtue. The red scarlett color of the cassocks which they now wear represent their willingness to martyr themselves (if need be) for Jesus Christ, and His church.

May God grant them courage and strength, but above all else may he allow them to radiate with the blessed light of the Holy Spirit. The Roman Catholic Church needs many, many examples of holines in these times of trial and tribulation (and that includes all of us).

does this group of 22 cardinals join another group of cardinals when it comes time to elect a new Pope or is this new group of 22 cardinals the only group? i forgot how many cardinals are in the room to elect a new Pope.

I believe it’s 130-something. I don’t know the exact number. It’s definitely over 100, though.

Yes, the new Cardinals join the old Cardinals. They aren’t replacing anyone. Wikipedia says there are 213 Cardinals, don’t know if that’s accurate.

Also only Cardinals under 80 years old can vote in Papal Conclave.

213?

Well, I guess I was wrong when I said 130 :o
