**22 Congressmen Hate Christmas

** This year’s “War for Christmas” – keeping “Christ” in the holiday has apparently been won. And, like many “wars,” there has even been a Congressional resolution in support of keeping Christmas alive and well.

On December 15 the House of Representatives passed a resolution “protecting the symbols and traditions of Christmas” by an overwhelming 401-22 vote.

Representative JoAnn Davis (R-VA), the resolution’s sponsor, said the resolution was necessary to counter “political correctness run amok.”

“No one,” she said, “should feel like they have done something wrong by wishing someone a Merry Christmas.”

Twenty-two Democrats played Scrooge and disagreed.

Representative Robert Scott (D-VA) said Republicans were more concerned with the symbolism rather than the substance of Christmas – referring to Republican passage of a bill to slow the rate of growth in federal entitlement programs.
A prime example of the false dichotomy of the liberal left. As if entitlements, which are nothing but band-aid fixes instead of real problem solvers, are going to cure the ills of the nation.

I’m sorry but this is flat out wrong. The same folks who got so wound up about Christmas passed a budget that cuts desperately needed funds from social programs. These people need to put their money where their mouth is. See the below link to a story from the Catholic News Service:

catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/0507191.htm

The House budget, passed Nov. 18 by a two-vote margin, would cut off food stamps for more than 250,000 by 2008, cut $10 billion from Medicaid funding, and reduce support for foster care, child support enforcement and aid to disabled people by $8 billion. It also would increase mandatory work hours for welfare recipients while underfunding a related child care program, cutting off 270,000 families.

There’s more to being a Christian than saying “Christmas”.

Really, this is partisan politics run amok. A silly vote for a meaningless resolution. A vote on Christmas is like a vote on motherhood and apple pie.

It might be interesting to know more about the congressional districts of those who voted against. Perhaps they have sizeable Jewish constituency, who would be non-plussed by a “three cheers for Christmas” resolution.

If only this were true! Haven’t you read how in case after case Christian symbols and religious freedoms have been ripped out of the public forum under the false banner of “separation of church and state?” If we wait to act until celebrating our holidays is outlawed, it will be too late, and yes, it can come to that in any country, even the USA. We have to be the guardians of freedom or we will lose our freedom.

Their Jewish constituents would probably agree that in a country where the vast majority are Christians and in which Christmas has been a national holiday for generations, and in which all faiths are protected under the law, that Christmas ought to remain a national holiday. I highly doubt that is what is prompting the negative votes. It’s much likely they actually believe in the ACLU nonsensical premise as if it were a protection against rampaging believers instead of what it really is–a limitation on the freedom of Christians to act like Christians in the public forum.

Does anyone have a list of the 22 who voted against Christmas, the National Holiday?

It is at the bottom of the article.

I was debating whether to post this article and decided not.

Could you please be fair and post the names of the Republicans that voted against Christmas? 😉

What religious freedoms have we lost?

Since there were only 22 who voted against the resolution and there are 22 Democrats on the list. I say there were no Republicans who voted against it. As for other than Yes and no votes.

5 Voted Present (All are Democrats)
  • Holt
    Israel
    Lowey
    Owens
    Schwartz ¶
5 Did not vote:

You have an incorrect definition of being a Christian. Yes, being a Christian entails helping your fellow man. But being a Christian does not mandate helping your fellow man via the government.

While I agree with virtually all of the sentiment here about the ridiculous vote of the 22 congressmen, saying that they hate Christmas because of their vote is too strong. I doubt any of them hate Christmas.
Agreed.
