Need to know if this has happened to anyone before… It didn’t happen to last year’s palms, and I can’t remember it happening any years before that. I usually tuck my palms between a picture and the wall at one of the top edges, diagonally… so the palm is apparent, a visible reminder, (away from the cats) and secure.
While coming back into the Living Room a little while ago, I accidently noticed the one by the front door was gone. I walked over to it and it was completely behind the picture, except for the bottom edge. I figured ok, it just fell. I took it from behind the picture to put it back up and it was no longer the palm I placed there only 3 days ago… completely faded, brittle, and curled almost tightly into one long cylindrical stick. I couldn’t figure out what had happened in just one day, I know it hadn’t fallen yesterday and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t like this. I was at work all day and my daughter was home so I thought, maybe she got it wet somehow (only reason i could think of why it was like this now) and didn’t want to tell me, and just tried to put it back… and then it dried out and curled up.
Then I went over to my bookshelf, where I had placed the one I was to put in my bedroom but hadn’t done so yet… same exact thing. Ok… there goes that explanation, couldn’t of been her. I had the air conditioning on all day… maybe that caused it. But it’s been 3 days… I had one for 365 days prior to Sunday, amidst heat, humidity, air conditioning… and it still resembled it’s former self except for being dry. My daughter has one in her room and I don’t even want to go upstairs and look. I don’t know why this bothers me so much, but they’re special to me, they mean a lot to me, they are visable everyday reminders of our faith and the Lord’s sacrifice and the coming joy of Easter. And now I don’t have them… for an entire year.
Although a life long Catholic, due to reasons which would take too long to explain (mostly marriage related), my teenage daughter is receiving all her sacraments at the Easter Vigil and I am being confirmed. In these past two months I have undergone more unusual and frustrating events and obstacles than I care to count. I have a very strong faith and am what I can only describe to be a very spiritual person. I didn’t make the connection between what’s been happening as of late to our coming Sacraments or Lent, until Lent came and it seemed to get worse and others were discussing how common this was.
Sorry for the long post… but I have to ask, is this (the palms being ruined) unusual, or does it happen to people frequently? I don’t want to read into this if I shouldn’t… but it’s been a long few months and I’m just starting to breathe a sigh of relief and feel a little lighter today… And now this. Any thoughts?
