I agree we need to get along more (at least on social justice and moral issues) but in some instances I can understand OHCA, it is very hard to get people to unite when there seems to be so much bias against the CC (media and all). God bless.

p.s. And I do agree with you that we need to do something about the growing non-religious segment in the U.S. and around the world.
The central issue with attempting to make it a Protestant versus Catholic thing is that the Catholic will always come out behind; statistics aside on a few levels. One, because of this thread, any lurkers to this board will once again read and be confronted with the perception that Catholicism, right or wrong, is associated with this. It gives one more thing for google to find in a search.
That however is not the main reason it is doomed to fail. The main reason is that we do not associate ourselves with other Protestants. Protestants is a meaningless term to us. If the Baptists, Assemblies of God, Episcopalians, Lutherans, nondenominational, Pentecostals or anyone makes the news…that is not OUR group of people. They are a different denomination. While Catholics may see the groups as being somewhat identified together based upon the word Protestant, we certainly do not. We are hammered all the time for being divided and as such cannot be expected for that perception to change when it comes to sex abuse. Sure, I have no doubt that Methodists have done bad things. However, I have never read a story in the news or an article in any magazine about it.
It is not part of popular perception either. While it undoubtedly has occured, a SNL joke or skit on molesting Methodist ministers will result in zero connection with the public.

The only thing that will help your cause is for there to be no or few new cases and for time to pass. Even then, once a perception is out there…it is hard to go away. I can pretty well tell you that attempting to clump together unlike groups and point to their difficulties will fail in my opinion.

Actually I wasn’t refering to the sex scandals alone. I have made many observations here on CAF, and although there are a good many Protestants who are kind there are also a good many that see the Catholic Church as a cult, false, the whore of Babylon . . . etc. which makes it very hard for us Catholics to unite with other Christians. I think that the CC has done much to stretch out it’s hand in an effort at ecumenism but I can’t say the same for other christian groups. Furthermore, I’m hoping good Protestants can help resolve this issue so that Protestantism (as a whole) can be united in ecumenism with us. God bless.

Unfortunately there is another factor. President Nixon got into trouble for the official coverup more so then trying to steal Democratic Party secrets. In this issue the present generation of Bishops tried to hide the story and as we type on this thread are selling Church assets to pay off civil out of court settlements. Recovery probably won’t happen within our lifetimes.

I just sat here and read through this whole thread and find that it has absolutly no value whatever. We all need to let this whole issue be in the past. There is nothing to gain for anyone to be re hashing this issue. It has been discussed and it is over. Lets all hope and pray that it never happens again in any church!!! Its high time that christians be united against sin. And show the world the love of Christ, which is what we should be doing. I wish every one would read the book by Thomas aKempas, “The Imatation of Christ”. It would do every one well…

This was done because non-Catholics CONSTANTLY bring this up. They seem to forget that we have stood for 2,000 years. They seem to think that just because of the year 2001, the abuse broke out then and that’s that. It seems to me that this is the only thing that they can aggravate us with and I’m tired of it. What about the 2,000 years before that? We Catholics think the story is old now, but others CONSTANTLY bring it up. And The Imitation of Christ is one of the best that was ever written, and comforting to say the least.

Well, noone was discussing it recently it until you started this thread

As to your point abuse goes on in all churchs as all people are sinners - my dog eats bones

Well, you are new here. It has been going on for quite some time. Someone says a dig and I defend it. that’s it. Defending the Catholic church, is the same as defending Jesus Christ. period.

Didn’t most of the molestations committed by Roman Catholic priests involve children? Maybe I don’t remember this accurately but I don’t recall the scandal centering on priests having afairs (adulterous or not) with adult women but certainly remember the scores of charges against perveted priests who couldn’t keep their hands of the children in their parish.

Thank you for bringing this up again.
** In Maryland, a former Episcopal priest was convicted of molesting a 14 year old boy.
In New Jersey, an Orthodox Rabbi went on trial for groping two teenage girls. In South Carolina, a Baptist Minister hs begun a 60 year sentence for molesting 23 children.
As my Catholic church faces this scandal over abuses by priests in Boston and around the country, we Catholics cite cases of misconduct by clergy of other religions, and we ask ourselves: Does the Catholic church really have a bigger problem with sexual abuse? Or are the public and the media just more fascinated by stories involving priests?
So sir, is this enough for you because the list goes on and on.**

Oh please, dont turn this into an abuse competition.

As JonNC said, pray for the victims, for reconciliation with Christ for the sinner and unity.

Dont go down the road of your church abuses more than our church na na ne na na !!!

One victim of abuse, in any church, is one victim too many.

Perhaps you shouldn’t comment here if you don’t like the topic.

Nobody knows the Priest involved. Only megachurch pastors like Jimmy Swiggart, Jim Bakker and Ted Haggard are known, but only because of the size of their congregations. The scandals are because of the actions of Cardinals Roger Mahony, Bernard F. Law and Francis George. Their rank and title made the problem one of an institution and no longer of a sinning man

So then you are Pentacostal, right? Well then you must of heard about James Taylor aka Bishop Andre Taylor among his provision of Promise Pentecostal church who was charged with 2nd degree sodomy and 2nd degree sexual abuse?
You also must of heard about Pastor Rasta Wright from Pentecostal church who was also arrested for crimes against children? The same crimes?

nope never heard of them, did you?🤷 I posted the three names of clerical sex scandals which I know of. Anyone else is just anonymous even after an arrest. We live in an age of search engines copy and paste. Again, at best a single church council protected those men if anybody, not the institution of the Church through its hierarchy.

**I am from Boston where Cardinal Law was and he was a good man. I don’t agree with his decisions, but what would anyone of you had done if given the situation? You don’t know. /**quote]

I choose not stand by, silently, and read of the poor Harvard University graduate -
*a Cardinal Prince of the Church *- who let this hell come into the lives of those children,
by failing in his responsibilty to keep a close personal watch on those damnable wolves -
after he was informed of their predatory practices.

The eventual eternal destination, of those wretches, is left to God alone.
Only He can extend mercy to them. I am inclined to believe that
God can and will extend mercy. I pray that He does.

Had Bernard Cardinal Law appeared on the steps of the Cathedral,
garbed in sackcloth, covered in ashes, a profound good might have
emerged from this horror. Repentence would have been starkly seen
in it’s healing reality. When I read of this practice of the Church, many decades ago,
I could never see it’s application to our own day.
I see it now.

A missed moment, that might have made all the difference -
to the hearts and minds and souls of those children, who were
left undefended, by a Cardinal Prince of the Church.

Apparently, *realpolitik *trumps public repentence.

I did not participate in the much earlier discussions,
on CAF, concerning these events.

Yet when I read the title of this thread, I thought that a reply
might be called for, and after reading the opening post,
I found that this was the case, in my own instance.

I will not further participate. It would serve no purpose,
at this juncture.

To those who are following this thread, without posting to same,
I beg you to always keep those injured children
in the foreground of your thought and prayers,
when a discussion of those events is undertaken.

Thank you.

Oh please…you are in denial of your own church. Protestant churches have the HIGHER molestation rates than the Catholic church. What do you say about that? Why be in denial about your own church?
