That is the ultimate cop out, for we have the truth and the evidence to support that truth. …
None of that negates that face that my proposed third option is possible. You prefer a different option, but that does not disprove the existence of my third option.

You prefer one of the three options; I prefer another of the three options. Whatever options we personally prefer, the three possible options still exist.

Rossum, considering how knowledgeable you are, I am sad that you do not believe you can access Truth. This conversation reminds me of an old hymn, The Solid Rock, written by Edward Mote:

You can go to the link to see all the lyrics, but the refrain is what I hear in my mind:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
library.timelesstruths.org/music/The_Solid_Rock/

Many things do change over time, such as language, but we believe God doesn’t. And we think He has made the world in such a way that we can know of his eternal power and divine nature. This solidness is palpable and I hope someday you will experience it.

One of the major threads in Buddhist philosophy is to avoid reification: treating something abstract as if it was concrete. Sometimes summarised as “the map is not the territory”. The map is the abstract while the (different) territory is the concrete. The error is to confuse the two and mistake one for the other.

One of the common signs of reification is to capitalise words: love becomes Love; beauty becomes Beauty. In your case truth has become Truth.

Truth is not a concrete thing. It is an abstraction. It cannot be accessed. A statement may be true, and that statement can be accessed, but Truth cannot be accessed on its own separately from the statement. It is an error of reification to think that it can.

One of the points of meditation is to help us distinguish between what is actually in the external territory of the real world and what is merely a part of the internal map that our brains construct to help us navigate through the real world. It is an error to mistake the map for the territory.

Sigh! It is as if you haven’t been reading anything I said even though you agreed that “…[t]hat something might be the truth, it might not. We make a working assumption that it is the truth.”

Yet, in this last post you state that the truth “cannot be accessed.” You still haven’t shown that it “cannot be accessed,” only that our access to it is somewhat sketchy.

Not only that, but you contradict yourself in the next paragraph by pointing out that meditation is our point of contact with reality. But if reality (aka the truth) “cannot be accessed” AND you know that – you have insisted as much in the above paragraph – then it would appear to be a waste of time attempting to do so.

Then you make an about face…

How can we “distinguish between what is actually in the external territory and what is merely a part of the internal map” if the actual truth “cannot be accessed?” But it CAN be accessed by meditation, apparently – so access is possible despite that “cannot be accessed.”

Must be another koan, I suppose…

The absolute truth “cannot be accessed,” but meditate anyway to access it. :hmmm:

Please note the capitalisation of my second sentence. I use “Truth” (capitalised) to refer to the reified truth that womanatwell referred to in her post.
Yet, in this last post you state that the truth “cannot be accessed.”
Not quite. I said, “A statement may be true, and that statement can be accessed, but Truth cannot be accessed on its own separately from the statement.” You have omitted my capitalisation, which is significant in this context, and you have omitted my following qualifying phrase. Reified “Truth” cannot be accessed. Ordinary truth can be accessed. The error is in the reification.
Not only that, but you contradict yourself in the next paragraph by pointing out that meditation is our point of contact with reality.
No. It is a point of contact with our internal models. By carefully studying those internal models we can see their faults, and where they do not match with parts of external reality. Our internal models put water in a mirage. External reality does not have that water. Hence we can deduce that our models are not perfect. The water in a mirage is a projection from our internal model onto external reality. Reification is just such a projection of a part of our internal model onto external reality, where it does not belong.

Our senses are not perfect, but they are capable of picking up mistakes like thinking there is water in a mirage. Meditation trains us to pick up more subtle mistakes, like reification.
But if reality (aka the truth) “cannot be accessed”
No. Reified capitalised “Truth” cannot be accessed, any more than the water we ‘see’ in a mirage can be accessed.

Reality can be accessed imperfectly through our senses. Equating reality with truth is another reification. A real rock is just a rock. It is not truth or Truth. The statement, “This object is a rock” is true. You cannot separate the truth from the statement.

Nobody will reincarnate for ever. Everyone attains nirvana eventually.

rossum
Its possible that some people will never attain nirvana. Take the following scenario:

If an asteroid hit the earth tomorrow and wiped every person, animal and plant off the planet except you, you would have no means by which to be future reincarnated into (as you would have no one to produce future offspring with).

This means you would have only one chance to attain nirvana within the remainder of your life or you would never achieve it. If you remain bitter about seeing everyone dead around you (from the asteroid) and became an alcoholic to drown your sorrows, you would die without nirvana and there would be no one to reincarnate into.

You would never achieve nirvana. Therefore the statement “Everyone attains nirvana eventually” is contingent and not an absolute truth. Turns out Buddha was winging it.

There. Just proved buddism is a false religion. Only 2998 left to go 😃

Better to check first before talking about things where your knowledge may be insufficient. People can be reincarnated in the immaterial realms: heavens and hells. The ancient Indians: Hindus, Jains and Buddhists believed – correctly – that stars were other suns a long way away, with their own sets of planets. It is possible for living beings to reincarnate there. The Sukhavati sutras and Chapter Ten of the Vimalakirti Nirdesa contain obvious examples of extra-solar planets:

Then the Bhagavān addressed the venerable Śāriputra, “Śāriputra, if you go from this buddha realm past 100,000 myriad buddha realms toward the western direction, there is a world known as Sukhāvatī (The Delightful). In that place the Tathāgata Arhat, the perfectly and fully enlightened Buddha known as Amitāyus (Immeasurable Life), dwells, lives and abides, teaching the Dharma.

Smaller Sukhavati sutra.

In this context a ‘buddha realm’ is a star and its planets. Pure Land Buddhists work to be reborn in Sukhāvatī where Amitāyus lives and teaches.

Even after the destruction of Earth, people could attain nirvana from Sukhavati, where it is easier to do than from Earth due to the presence of Amitayus.

D+ Can do better. 🙂

So according to you, if any religion contains one incorrect statement, then the entire religion is a false religion?

Does this mean that if ever the theory of reincarnation was shown to be true, then Christianity would become a false religion? (according to you that is - I personally don’t think it would mean that).

BTW, you may be interesting in reading this book: jimbtucker.com/return-to-life.html

So do some of the strange statements in the OT make Christianity false? Or Judaism false? (Like Leviticus 19:19)
No. Strange doesn’t mean false.

E=MC2 seems strange to the average person. That doesn’t make it false.

So you are saying statements like "You shall not sow your field with mixed seed. Nor shall a garment of mixed linen and wool " are correct? How about Deuteronomy 25:11-12?

So according to you, if any religion contains one incorrect statement, then the entire religion is a false religion?
I have heard it said that the evidence that all religions other than Christianity are false is because ‘there is only one God’. And yes, I know, it begs the question…

Well, any religions that aren’t monotheistic.

So Judaism, Islam aren’t false in their monotheism.

I like “Rule One, there are no rules. Rule Two, no outside food or beverage.”

Harry123;13595263:
Jesus said: “He who is not with me is against me.” – Luke 11:23

Jesus said: “He who is not against us is with us.” – Mark 9:40

And don’t get me started on the incorrect statements in the Old Testament: insects having four legs?

🙂

Perhaps you forgot you are on a Catholic forum, in dialogue with mainly Catholics, rather than on a fundamentalist Bible-Alone forum?

An atheist friend of mine posted this

“there have been 3000 gods so far but only yours actually exists. The others are silly made up nonsense, but yours, yours is real”

Of course hes speaking sarcastically. What are good arguments to make against this. The idea that because many gods have been proven false over the years therefore God is false as well
One may group all existing and historical religion into two groups - cosmological and theological. Cosmological religions do not transcend the universe; their “gods” are all creatures without a creator.

Theological religion may be categorized as polytheistic or monotheistic. Polytheistic religions have many gods but not one supreme being.

Monotheism is the only religion that satisfies reason’s demand that a supreme being exists and exists outside the universe.

If the “big crunch” theory is correct, then that means at some point in future, there will be one last living thing (be it a plant, an animal, or a human) before the universe crunches in on itself back to a singularity.

This last living thing will have only one chance to attain nirvana. Its going to be so stressed out at this point seeing the universe collapse in on itself that its unlikely to remain cool enough to attain nirvana.

And if it can’t achieve nirvana …then Buddha was wrong (and that last plant should ask Buddha for its money back :p).
