Take heart. Isn’t it wonderful that people are willing to PAY to hear a priest give a homily? I don’t think Father Corapi can get to the number of parishes he used to when he was younger and in better health, so why not rent an arena and reach as many as he can.

Speaking of EWTN, it’s so not fair that Shaw Cable charges us a monthly fee to have that channel 😦 I think that EWTN actually doesn’t charge for the use of the network and Shaw is taking advantage of we Catholics grrr! On top of that, I wish there was a catholic radio station out here, which alas, we don’t… but they do have a protestant station. Yeah I’m just in a mood right now

I realize I can watch online, but it’s just not the same.

I believe EWTN is rarely a free channel on any cable company’s channel lineup. Its usually part of the higher end cable packages.

And I gladly pay for that too. Hubby gets his sports channels, I get EWTN.

I think advertised tickets for $37.00 for something like this reflects very poorly on the speaker and the Church.

The logic some have used here is simply wrong. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for example have infinite value. It’s certainly worth far in excess of $37.00/person. On the other hand it would be monumentally wrong to try and charge $37.00/Mass/person – although some will certainly tithe far more than that.

Trying to compare this seminar to a rock concert misses the point completely. A very poor reflection overall.

plus he needs to make a living
Isn’t Father Corapi a millionaire already? Doesn’t he get a paycheck from a diocese?

I can understand that there’s a lot going into an event- staff, rent, utilities, etc- but I paid nothing to attend a Eucharistic Congress in 2004, and that involved just as much planning (shutting streets down, renting a location, securing speakers, room for priests and religious who had to come, extra police, etc…). Seems a little off. Though, to be fair, it’s cheaper to do things in WV than it is in other states.

You’re right…but to play devil’s advocate; at Mass we also tithe 10% of our income (in theory anyway), do we not?

$37 to see a speaker at an arena venue is hardly expensive. Arena’s aren’t free and neither is all the other things that go along with planning such an event. This isn’t at a local Catholic Church. How much do you think it costs to rent an arena? Pay for all the lighting, sound and security people, all items needed to be printed, plus airfare and such. Who is going to pay for all of that?

Exactly. At some point, we do end up financial supporting the Church and its various ministries.

I can’t even remember the last time I attended a Catholic conference or retreat that I didn’t pay some kind of expense. And then there was WYD that was very, very expensive to attend and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

I paid five bucks when Fr. Corapi came to our parish about 10 years ago.

with 1000 of hungry kids in the world and in poverty i refuse to spend $37 on a ticket when its free on ewtn. with earthquake and people around the world this $37 would feed a family. sorry no deal for me God does not want me to feed the rich
**God Bless you, i hope you send the $37 to a worthy charity to feed the hungry!

Unfortunately, $37 will not “feed the rich” (whatever that ridiculous statement means?)

$37 to feed your soul with God’s Word from an Inspired priest like Fr. Corapi is a priceless gift.

i bet most of us waste $37 on chips & beer or candy or pizza… every week, not feeding the rich!!**

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Orsa Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

I believe that I heard he does not get paid by any diocese. I was asked to go to the Los Angeles Conference and I think it cost more than $37.00 and that was to hear some less than Catholic teachings and I believe they had dancers at the Mass, but can’t be positive.

Anytime you must rent a large area there will be a cost. Do you expect Fr. Corapi to pay for the cost himself? Someone mentioned him being a millionaire, where are the facts? There also are priests who have inherited money or have made money on books etc., are we to judge them for making a living? He is not a parish priest.

At our parish we had Patrick Madrid and Fr. Casey do our last two lenten missions and I think they just took up a collection for them. But Fr. Cases belongs to a religious order I believe.

Yeah by golly those COSTS! $37.00/ticket + fees! 😦
people pay up to $70 to see a rock band play. Here in Chicago it cost $200 to see the Bears play and thats during the season and really bad seats. So I saw $40 to see a good man speak about God is not so bad.

The diocese should have paid the expenses. And this isn’t a rock star, he’s a clergyman.
Is there any accounting done for the money? A family of four would pay 150 dollars for
one night!
It seems that the the poorer Catholics are being excluded from this event and I don’t think that Jesus would like that very much.

I have no problem for those that think this is a bargain going and seeing the man. It is judgemental to compare him to televangelists or assume that Fr. Corapi is getting any money for that.

That being said, I am not one that would be interested in the least to see a celebrity. Christ taught that the first will be last and the last will be first in the kingdom. If one wants someone who is a celebrity to God, look for the one who serves without recognition.

But if the diocese approved of his message wouldn’t they be willing to foot the bill? Again,
37 dollars is a lot of money, and it WILL provide food for a month for a family in some countries, I know for a fact that forty dollars will provide education for a girl for a year in
Africa. However, the real point is that the poorer people in the parish are being denied access to this speaker and that’s seems very unkind and uncharitable.
Actually, that is, IF the speaker is in tune with Catholicism and what it teaches.

I attend several gospel music events during the year at venues such as County Parks, State Parks and local churches (non-Catholic), there is no attendance charge for any of them, only a free-will donation basket. Care to guess which, the paid or free events, reaches the most blue-collar folks? Care to guess which is better received, does more good for the general public? Care to guess which is more likely to attract that person just on the edge of repentance? I think the Church teachers would do much better at evangelizing the public if they learned to keep their hands in their pockets instead of being perpetually outstretched, palms up.

IMHO, people don’t have much of a grasp on what these sort of things cost. We are having a conference at a local parish church, three speakers, for a day and a half (Fri 4 p.m. through Sat evening). It will cost $30 for adults, $45 late registration. Just a few dollars less than the San Antonio event and just a few more hours of conference.

I’m going to hazard a wild guess that it will cost a bit less to put on a conference at a local parish church than at the AT&T center. (By the way, we have Fr Larry Richards coming, and I can’t wait to hear him)

Fr Corapi is going to give four talks at the San Antonio conference, plus there are other events. I would pay far more than $37 to see this.

Let me make two recommendations: 1. If you think that $37 is too much to pay, don’t go. That’ll free up a seat for someone else. 2. If you think $37 price tag unfairly excludes the poor, buy a ticket and donate it to the diocese of San Antonio and specify that you’d like a poor person to be able to attend.
