I haven’t read all of the thread, but I’m of the opinion that there should be no animals held in zoo’s…
Im with you on that, and I think the rest of the world is slowly coming around to that realization, those animals deserve to live in the wild where there were intended to live, not just sit in a jail cell for the pure amusement of humans.

If you look into many of their eyes, they are dead inside and its quite clear.

I don’t think zoos are going away any time soon. They are a centennial part of urban culture.

For that matter, if they did, and only humans who went on safari saw these critters, that would be the surest means to make interest and sympathy for animals go poof.

If people honestly think that animals are only kept in zoos “for the pure amusement of humans”, then I’d like to know what they think of the newfangled wireless that Mr. Marconi just invented.

Zoos today aren’t in the entertainment business as an end in itself anymore. Their primary purpose is education of the populace and preservation of endangered species. For example, if not for the Los Angeles and San Diego Zoos, the California condor would be long extinct. Instead - thanks to the fact that the remaining small population was in an environment where they could be truly protected and cared for - they are now back in the wild and signs indicate that they are taking the first steps on the road to recovery in areas where they haven’t been seen for nearly 100 years. That would not have been possible without people having seen these animals in person and being moved to give money as a result.

Realistically, if Harambe had been born in the wild, he would most likely have been shot by a poacher long before now and served up as bushmeat somewhere. In a modern zoo, the animals aren’t captives - they’re ambassadors.

Yes, I do agree with you about that aspect of modern zoos, however it irks me when I visit the zoo and see a large cat pacing back and forth in the same path over and over again in a relatively small enclosure, that animal would LOVE to be out in the open, free to run and live as it was intended, but I guess if that one animal being caged helps the species overall in their native lands, thats not a bad thing either.

I do know the Cincinnati Zoo played a big role with Rhinos awhile back and are doing great things to make sure they do not go totally extinct, I had the pleasure of seeing their white rhino when it was alive, that was one magnificent creature!!

I think there are two sides to the issue of wild animals in captivity in zoos. However, as I mentioned previously, that issue may be related but is tangential to the main one in this thread, namely the moral value of a human compared to that of an animal.

Today on local news in Vermont, they had a woman who had taken the picture of the gorilla and boy that was seen on most sites on the child been dragged twice in water and she said it happened in seconds and what they did not show was that the gorilla then had also dragged the boy up the stone wall like a doll.

Whether the gorilla meant harm or not does not matter as how can anyone allow a child to be dragged on stones.(Jane Goodall says he meant no harm)

Just wish they had told the whole story or shown the whole video.

When do they ever do that??? God Bless, Memaw

I haven’t read all of the thread, but I’m of the opinion that there should be no animals held in zoo’s…

I’m sad the gorilla had to be killed, but realise that would be the response of the keepers who obviously hadn’t a clue what to do.
If all the animals in all the zoos were released back into their natural habitat, most would not survive. I think the zoo keepers did exactly what they needed to do. Save that little boy! God Bless, Memaw

If they turned ever animal in every Zoo back to it’s natural habitat, it wouldn’t survive. So then what??? I’m thankful the little boy was saved, even if the gorilla had to die. God Bless, Memaw

I’m glad the little boy was rescued.

Yes releasing captive wild animals wouldn’t be the correct thing to do, there would be a long process when each zoo would eventually close. (not that I think they will any time soon)

Everyone loves to look at a wild animal, but this shouldn’t be done at the expense of the animals freedom. They have reserves in the area’s these animals come from, they can be monitored, breed there, and people can observe from a distance.

I was aghast at the remarks on the internet too. I posted stating that maybe they should remember what happened to the woman and the chimp that went nuts.

The lady’s friend owned the chimp but couldn’t get it inside so she called her friend. The friend arrived and was attacked by the animal. She lost her face, both eyes, had her fingers bit off. That was a chimp. The gorilla was a male 400 pounder. No human has a chance much less a child.

Yes, the remarks were a disgrace. Some wanted the parents fined or jailed. Others thought it was murder to kill the animal. Others couldn’t understand why it wasn’t tranquilized. Well, maybe it would have gotten irate and totally out of control.

If the handlers hadn’t killed it, many may have been witnesses to a child being mutilated and then killed.

I think it all says a lot of where our values are. What can you expect when we abort babies, discuss euthanasia, etc.
👍 I remember the case of the chimp attacking the friend and saw her on a news program. Well stated post.

Mary,

I read early this morning the family is not going to sue the zoo. They ask for no financial donations for themselves but that donations be given to the zoo instead.

Sorry my copy/past won’t work so I can’t post the link.

And few would ever be able to see them. Only those rich enough to go there. I doubt that will ever happen. God Bless, Memaw

I can’t afford to go see them in the wild, yet I wouldn’t pay less to go see them locked up, because there is no other way of putting it, they are locked up, freedom taken for their entire life.
One days fun visit for us, a life time of misery for them.

Each to their own, but I respect God’s creation and try to do my best to help ensure their freedom as much as our own.

There is much madness in this world, most for the selfish human desires…

What about the animals we have for pets. They were once free and wild. Horses love to run free, I doubt they want to be in a coral or barn for life. I don’t think they are miserable, they do adjust. What about rodeo animals and circus animals, we could go on and on. God Bless, Memaw

Sadly, if zoos were eliminated, the only people who would see or care about these critters would be biologists and yes, hunters.

You can weep all you want but zoos are here to stay.

Yes we could go on and on, some animals have become domesticated and have been used to help us with daily tasks, and some are for companionship.
Some, like wild cats, wolfs, gorilla, etc etc, don’t become domesticated and so should be left to the wild.

Circus with animals are banned here, not sure about certain countries. Most horse owners I know do not stable their horse’s 24/7 they have plenty of fields and company.

Yes they may adapt to their living quaters, but just because they do doesn’t make it right.
