A Belgian Catholic Church-backed commission Friday published a report revealing hundreds of cases of alleged sexual abuse of minors, in nearly every congregation in the country.
The commission said it had received 475 complaints in the first six months of this year, mostly related to paedophilia allegations committed in the 1950s through the late 1980s by Catholic clergy, but also by religion teachers and adults working with youth movements.
The 200-page report which contains testimonies from some 124 anonymous “survivors” – as the victims of the alleged abuse are called – reveal that the sexual abuse for most victims began at age 12, although one victim was two years old, five were age four, eight age five and ten age seven, the report said.
The church will respond to the report on Monday.

356 boys and 118 girls sexually abused in Belgian from 1950 to the late 1980s by 102 Catholic clergy involving 29 religious orders.

Ugh. Just sucks in every way possible. There really isn’t much you can say, is there?

I don’t believe what is being said in the report.

Someone may allege something but it may not be true.

Such perfidy in the Liberal stronghold of Belgium? I cannot say that I’m astonished or anything.

Yeah unfortunately that was the mentality of the Catholic church for so many years which is why it continued to happen. Very, very sad…it did happen and in the end those pedophile priests and all pedophiles will face the final judgement before our Heavenly Father!!!

What is so very tragic about this report is that much of the evidence has been confirmed by the priests themselves, and some of the cover-up was caught on audio tape recordings secretly made by the victims who feared they wouldn’t be believed.

"The number of those coming forward with their stories and testimonies, however, could be only a fraction of those actually abused, Adriaenssens said. He added several priests cooperated with the panel, which had the support of the Belgian church.

“We saw how priests, called up by the commission and asked to help seek the truth, were willing to set up the list of 10, 15, 20 victims they abused during boarding school while the commission knew only of one,” he said."

Those abusers who are still alive should be prosecuted and the Church in Belgium should either pay, or be legally compelled to pay adequate compensation to the victims for these wrongs.

Archbishop Andre-Joseph Leonard said that although the Church would not be able to offer immediate solutions, it would set up a victims’ support centre.
An independent body to investigate alleged abuse found it had occurred in every diocese over decades.
The reconciliation centre will build on the work of the commission which was shut down after a police raid to seize its files earlier this year. An appeals court ruled last week that the raid was illegal, and the files could not be used by prosecutors.
Many alleged victims came forward to testify to the commission after the Bishop of Bruges, Roger Vangheluwe, resigned this year, admitting to having sexually abused a boy before and after becoming a bishop.

Right–I mean, look at the U.S. --a great country, truly, and the abuse there wasn’t ‘just’ in the more liberal-leaning ‘East and Left Coasts’. . .there was abuse in the ‘conservative heartland’ as well.

I don’t know. Was part of it related to the entire 20th century in which all aspects of society had violent upheavals. . .from great scientific advances (automobiles, planes), to a great world War (I), to huge materalistic gains and concomitant ‘freedoms’ demanded --women’s votes, the push for contraception, union rises – in the 1920s, the huge depression world wide and subsequent militarizations in Germany and Japan in the 1930s, the second great war of the 1940s, the turmoils of ‘colonization’ and the attempts to impose peace and prosperity along with marches of communism and socialism in the 1950s, the civil rights movement and the rise of radical feminism in the 1960s, the pursuit of ‘me-ness’ in the 1970s, the rampant consumerism of the 1980s, the attempts at ‘cocooning’ and both an extreme ‘back to values’ on the part of some and an extreme ‘jettison of values’ on others, and finally the shadow of 9/11 and its global aftermath coloring the first decade of the 2000s,. . .and that is only a tiny example of the ‘changes’ that occurred during the lives of those pedophile priests which may have had some kind of influence on why they did what they did.

I do hope that legal charges will be made and that appropriate actions including above all penance and restitution are made. . .but I also refuse to let the actions of any, some, or even many men, even priests, override the actual teachings of the Catholic Church.

That some members of the Church abused their Catholic faith and DEFIED their Catholic teachings is tragic and hurtful to all.

What’s most hurtful is that some will be unable to separate an individual pedophile priest, or even a group of them, who by their actions have actually DENIED AND DEFIED THE CHURCH. . .and these people will somehow feel that these priests’ actions are not only a stain on the Church but that the fact that they did this disproves the ‘Christianity’ of the Catholic Church, and/or demonstrates that the Church is actually evil because ‘its members are evil.’ We can try to demonstrate the falsity of those ideas but when a lot of members of mass media are themselves victims of such faulty thinking and presenting it as ‘fact’ it is quite difficult to keep on calmly presenting the truth --because it looks as though we are trying to ‘defend’ or ‘coverup’ ourselves.

We aren’t. Nobody argues that great evil was NOT done by some. Nobody is trying to downplay it. What we are trying to do is to make sure that ONLY WHAT IS ACTUALLY WRONG is being addressed.

Suppose a man went out and robbed another man of $500, and was caught and tried.

At the trial, he was accused not only of robbing the man of $500 but also of raping his wife (a deed of which he was NOT guilty).

And at the trial, the actual offense of robbery was almost not addressed at all, while the prosecuting attorney ratcheted up the rape charge.

**And the man (admittedly guilty of a crime of robbery) kept trying to say that he was not guilty of rape, and kept getting shot down by the courts and by the media covering, with continual screams of 'This RAPIST". **

That would be pretty awful, right? It’s bad enough to be guilty of a sin, and hopefully people would ‘pay for it’ appropriately. But to be NOT guilty of something and be pilloried for it. . .and to have perhaps generations be ‘taught’ lies about the whole subject. . .that’s a pretty rotten thing for any person. . .let alone 1 billion Catholic people who are in the end being accused of crimes which THEY ARE NOT GUILTY OF.

**If those priests are guilty, and they mostly admit they are, certainly they need to pay for their crimes. But don’t pillory the whole Church as being ‘guilty’ when it is not. That’s all. **

You live in Eire? I admit I don’t know too much about the culture there, but in the USA Irish Catholics have not appeared to me to be particularly conservative; of course we also have the Kennedys who are infamous liberals.

When I think conservative, I think traditional. How does the TLM fare in Eire? I just recently read about an incident in which a laicised Irish priest went up for communion at a TLM and when the priest wouldn’t let him receive in the hand, he spat “You’re in Ireland now!” and grabbed a Host from the ciborium, evidently spilling it. That gave me the impression that there are a lot of revolutionist/liberal types even associated with the clergy in Eire. I could be wrong though… I’ve never been there.

I am very puzzled. This commission disbanded in June after the government took away all their papers in an illegal raid. Then who came out with this report? Where do the records they supposedly use come from?
Not that I am denying that there were some cases of crimes by police. But the commission and their records have been gone since June.

Why would a priest of all people do such a thing?
A prayerful preist is strengthened by God to resist temptations and this strength is needed. Preists are indeed humans, they are “all people”.
Hetrosexual desires are a natural order instilled into us by the creator in order that we might experience pleasure. A preist is called by God to overcome sexual lusts, so naturally only by Gods help can he do this.

God of course would never ignore such calls for help from one he called, which leads me to the only conclusion that these 400 preists had proved all too human, sinful to their core, for not seeking our Lords help.

It remains of course a possibility that these preists were set this challenge to overcome and by failing, they will learn from this an emerge stronger in faith.
It is almost automatic that people find such events negative. When God sets us tests, even if we fail them, we emerge changed and strengthened. His plans we know are perfect and the reasons for this happening we must trust are events working for the final victory.

I am not quite sure how to interpret that message. I do believe that God will have the personal final judgement for those that so sadly abuse innocent children. This is all very personal for me and I am trying desperately to be a part of the faith that I grew up with and loved. I must say it is because of the Catholic channel and hearing priests like Father Trujillo (sorry for the spelling) and Patrick Coffin that I am finding more answers and finding my way back. We can never makes exuses for their actions…the evil that was committed destroys lives, however forgivess is the ultimate answer. Thank you for your post…God Bless You,
