Millions of Catholics in Manila have just very excitedly participated in the procession of the Black Nazarene, a life-sized statue of Jesus carrying the cross, which many there consider miraculous. Many follow the statue in atonement for their sins and follow it or touch it hoping for help from Jesus. Veneration of this statue has been officially established as a sacramental. (This year’s occurrence of this annual procession has no official connection with the Pope’s visit to the Philippines a week later.)
