5 out of 33,000 Saved

I Just heard the following story:

An arch Deacon known to Saint Vincent Ferrer died at the same hour as saint Bernard. The Deacon appeared to Ferrer after dying, saying the following: at the hour I died, 33,000 others also died. Those that went straight to heaven were 2: Myself and saint Bernard. Those that went to purgatory numbered 3, and the rest went to hell. So 5 out of 33,000 were saved. Just imagine if this is the ratio of people saved to people damned. Damn!!!

I can think of no better way to encourage scrupulosity than to repeat this story…
 
According to ibiblio.org, the current population is 7,036,040,000

According to www.cia.gov, 153,00 die a day.

According to wikipedia.org, there are 2400,000,00 Christians in the world.

If my maths is correct (and it never is!), that would mean 1125 Christians die
a day.

According to Wikipedia, about 50% Christians are practicing.

This would mean that about 560 practicing Christians die a day. Does anyone know how to see how many saved people there are per day according to 5/33000? My maths is awful!

I know it’s not only Christians who are saved and not all Christians are saved, but I was trying to work out
why it would only be 5 out of 3300.
 
Perhaps for that specific hour, but who knows what all of the other hours were like?

Also, I know there is St. Gertrude prayer. Each time it is said 1,000 are released from purgatory (by the Lord’s promise). If only an average of 60 people a day went to purgatory, that prayer would have emptied it of every soul from the history of the world very, very quickly. Which would then mean that the promise wouldn’t be kept when it is said now.

There are then two possible solutions: A) one of the Saints is wrong since the numbers are very contradictory, or B) that number of 5/33,000, while correct for that specific hour, was a statistical anomoly compared to all other hours.

In any event, if someone is truly confused I’d remind them that we are not required to believe any private revelation and to contact a priest for further guildance.

Our Lord dictated the following prayer to St. Gertrude the Great to release 1,000 Souls from Purgatory each time it is said.

"Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen."
 
If this figure were actually correct, then if the entire population of Colorado Springs where I live were wiped out in some catastrophe:
Out of the 400,000 who live here (rounding those figures out) only about 50 (or a little more maybe 60) would be saved and 30-40 of them would end up in purgatory. We also have about 15 catholic churches including the cathedral of our diocese so that averages about 4people per parish! I know Jesus said narrow is the gate but, I think this gate is a little TOO narrow or we’re back to a New England style Calvinism. God’s already picked the saved lot and you ain’t one of them but, you act like it anyways! Also where does the Lord’s Divine Mercy enter into this equation? This sort of picture of God not only leads to scruples but despair over God’s mercy and forgiveness. Our Lady of Fatima says there are many souls that “fall into hell like snowflakes” that need people to pray for them. We must needs pray for them and that we don’t end up as one of them. I do recommend the St Gertrude prayer and pray it daily for those in purgatory especially those who didn’t believe in it and find themselves there.

I always wondered about that phrase from Our Lady of Fatima about souls going to hell because they have no one to pray for them? That confused me.:confused:

Does that mean that we should pray for people here on earth while they are still alive to prevent them from going to hell? Because would it not be too late to pray for them after they died if they were falling into hell “like snowflakes”? Oh, and I love St. Gertrude’s prayer! I say it everyday…throughout the day.🙂

I think that means we should pray that God’s mercy reaches them so they don’t quietly slip into hell.
I found this prayer on a Holy Card stuffed into an old prayer book:

A PRAYER FOR THE DYING
O most merciful Jesus, lover of souls, I beesech Thee by the agony of Thy Most Sacred Heart and by the sorrows of Thine Immaculate Mother, wash clean in Thy Blood the sinners of the whole world who are now in their agony and who are to die this day ( here I include all those especially who’ll die a sudden, unprovided for or violent death) Amen.
V. Heart of Jesus,who didst suffer death’s agony.
R. Have mercy on the dying.

Maybe we could all use a little bit of scruples. So hopefully this revelation can be the kick in the butt that most of us need to take God a bit more seriously. I am not pointing fingers, believe me I include myself big time in this. What did that poll say a few years ago? Only 44% or so of Catholics believe that the Eucharist is the true body of Christ? How many of us don’t think it is a sin to miss Mass, then receive the Body of Christ w/out confession? How many of us go against the Church teachings concerning contraceptives, birth control, divorce/remarriage, abortion, pornography, lieing, cheating, being ashamed of God in public? How many of us put off confession until “next Sunday” when it’s only Tuesday and we’ve sinned? And that is only those of us practicing Catholics! What about the Billions of others who scorn and persecute His Church? Maybe 5 out of 33,000 is a little low, but I get the feeling that the number is closer to 5 than it is to 33,000. No, I am not judging people to hell, I am merely observing (and sadly partaking in) sin. Scrupulocity has nothing to do with it…we are in a terrible state of being right now (in my opinion of course).
 
Before we get too far into the math, can someone verify the story in the first post?

Yes:) That is exactly what that means. It has been the Blessed Mother’s message at many of her apparitions…especially in this decade. Your prayers for unbelievers, the lukewarm, those who are away from the church etc CAN help save souls. Jesus takes those prayers and uses them to bring people back to him through special graces. Just think how different the world would be if everyone prayed for the conversion of sinners in a daily Rosary or the Divine Chaplet of Mercy or BOTH:) The end of each decade in the Rosary does just this…“save us from the fires of hell and lead ALL souls, especially those who are in most need of thy mercy.”

That works out to about 1million people alive today who would make it, statistically.

i agree…

and if all else fails maybe people should go to the words of Jesus… who said that the way is narrow and there are FEW who find it… the saints also speak of not many making it… but i can’t recall which saints said waht…

Also, i heard this same thing about 5 in 33,000 but i heard it was St Leonard who… related this story…
