66% Think U.S. Spies on Its Citizens

Two-thirds of Americans believe that the FBI and other federal agencies are intruding on privacy rights as part of terrorism investigations, but they remain divided over whether such tactics are justified, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released yesterday.

The poll also showed that 52 percent of respondents favor congressional hearings on how the Bush administration has handled surveillance, detainees and other terrorism-related issues, compared with 45 percent who are opposed. That question was posed to half of the poll’s 1,005-person random sample.

So i guess that means the other 34% know? Because you would have the be missing a heck of a lot of marbles to think that the government doesn’t spy on us.

I guess that means you think they are monitoring what you post on the web including what you say here and they are aware of your anti-Bush, anti-war feelings. My guess is they are already planing to move you into a combat unit and let the Sunnis shut you up for them. Of course I am being facetious!
 
Much is known about each of us. Disgarding the government, with the internet, too many people know too much about all of us. I’m not sure what kind of spying you are referring to, but lots more agencies know far more about us than does the government. The only way you can avoid this is to move to Afghanistan and live in a cave–oh and don’t take your cell phone or an Ipod or a Blackberry. And don’t drive a car with a GPS. People will know exactly where you are within fifty feet.

O don’t kid yourself. I never said they were spying on me. My ego may be big, but its not big enough for me to think im that important. However, you’d have to be a fool to think that the goverment doesnt spy on some Americans.

I certainly hope they do. I don’t want Mafia Dons or people who are know to support terrorist going around and the government without a clue what they are up to.

And thats where you and i are differe. I do not want the government illegaly spying on American citazines “in the name of safety”. Especially considering it has already gotten to the point where they are arresting/deporting harmless people “because there terrorists”.

I didn’t say harmless terrorist. I said harmless people that the goverment claims are terrorist. You really think that everyone the goverment arreset’s/spys on/deports is guilty of terrorism or conspiering to commit a terrorist act?
 
There is one sure way to test the system: just keep repeating the word “plutonium”. And pretty soon, you will know for sure.

No one said anything about illegal spying until you did. I was talking about legal spying. And yes I believe anyone the goverment arreset’s or deports under the Patriot Act is guilty of terrorism or conspiering to commit a terrorist act, as for spying on them, the reason we do it is to determine if they are guilty or not.

Legal spying? So every single wire tap done by the feds has a legal warrant behind it? O please. :rolleyes:

You may be perfectly fine with sacrificing your civil liberties “in the name of safety” but i am not.

And you don’t think it gets abused?

What are you prevented from doing that you could not do before the Patriot Act?

Ah, but here is the problem, today the terrorists are foreign non-christians. Tomorrow maybe its Catholics… the “loss of privacy” from the government today, is tomorrows tyranny. Its not a stretch to think of somebody in control of gov’t who decides pro-lifers are all potential terrorists (because, what is the definition of terrorism anyway…look it up, by law, its pretty broad) and well, maybe they need to waterboard us to get us to confess to our crimes or planned crimes…

But you have already stated that

You just contradicted yourself in the sense that you have already decided (not determined) their guilt
