Retired priest charged over abuse scandal

A retired Catholic priest at the centre of a child abuse scandal has been charged after turning himself in to police in Sydney’s north-west.

Father Finian Egan was helped out of his car by detectives as he arrived at Ryde Police Station with a lawyer at about 11:00am (AEST) yesterday.

Two of his alleged victims hugged as the 77-year-old hobbled with a walking stick into the station.

Egan was then** charged with 17 offences relating to alleged assaults on four children** in Sydney and on the state’s Central Coast** between 1972 and 1987.**

Egan has already been investigated by the Catholic Church.

It sent him home to resume duties in Ireland at the time and told no-one that he had been banned from ministry.

The church has continued its association with the priest, while Egan has consistently denied all allegations.**

Egan is a friend of New South Wales Attorney-General Greg Smith

the ABC is the government funded station
some would say it has a heavy bias against Catholicism
then again they did do a very nice pro gay adoption piece in 2010 featuring the now infamous Mark J Newton -article and video were pulled from their website but the article can still be found on the web

Most Australians I know would agree it is the most reliable news service - ABC and SBS are probably on par for that claim.

I’ve never noticed any bias for or against the Church. One pro-gay adoption segment doesn’t show bias against the Church.

I agree. The station doesn’t show any particular bias as a whole, however (just like with any other media) you will find individuals who demonstrate bias.

I hope he is proven innocent, if he is. If he is guilty, I hope he is brought to justice. Either way, I’ll be praying

Sigh. Stuff like this makes me sad. The article says that the priest turned himself in. If the allegations are true, I’m glad he did that, because it brings closure to the victims and to himself, so that all souls involved have a better chance of being saved. Regardless, I hope healing and forgiveness can happen soon.

ABC and SBS are pro-gay marriage it get positive coverage on an almost daily basis
they have helped foster the belief that Catholic priest = paedophile
any negative story about the Church gets an airing -if an 80 yo priest is involved in a fight over a parking spot in WA it will be in the main news bulletin in Victoria
The clergy abuse issued has been hashed and rehashed and while it was henious and those responsible should be dealt with under the law was it any worse that what occurred in institutions run by other organisations or the government
you would certainly think so
If a person has a funeral in a Catholic church and it is mentioned on the ABC do they mention the name of the church ? I don’t see it
Positive stories on the Church are few and far between
the media decides what stories they run
