The decision by the Diocese of Little Rock to advise Catholics to no longer participate or contribute to the Komen Foundation recently drew criticism from a self-proclaimed Catholic in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, George Arnold, in an op-ed piece entitled “A Fact-free Decision.” He says (among other things) there is no documentation to support the claim that Komen funds go to Planned Parenthood. I referred him to several pro-life web sites that addressed the issue but he replied that there was “lots of assertions, no documentation” and that the pro-life sources were “not exactly a neutral source.”

He’s obviously pro-choice but will not admit it. Catholic by heritage but not by faith.

Can anyone suggest a resource I could send to him that he might consider “neutral”?

Is the diocese nuts?

Komen ( cms.komen.org/komen/index.htm) is a private foundation solely devoted to raising funds to diagnose and treat breast cancer. Nothing else. It is named after a wealthy woman who died of breast cancer, Susan Komen. It uses money to pay for mammograms for poor women, and uses its powerful name to host and sponsor events to raise breast cancer awareness and to raise money for breast cancer research.

I searched over the entire Komen website and found no mention of any affiliation with any organization such as PP or anything else. It has no PP or PP-type affiliates. Its corporate sponsors don’t include anything like PP or related organizations.

Komen is a great organization which does great work.

You should google “Komen foundation and abortion”. It provides lots of articles that relate how the Komen fondation dontates lots of money to PP.

The Komen foundation is hypocritical, claiming to aggressively fight against breast cancer, yet completely denying any possible correlation or link between breast cancer and abortion.

It’s a very poor position for this foundation to take as even those who support abortion are beginning to concede points on this issue.

Furthermore, Komen, at least locally if not on a national level, has given grants to Planned Parenthood. This furthers the hypocrisy, but also lends a healthy dose of depressing irony to the situation.

USA Today recently ran an article about the controversy
usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-02-26-diocese-komen_N.htm

It included this quote from the Komen Foundation:
Rebecca Gibson, a spokeswoman for the Komen foundation, said the group invested $69.6 million in more than 1,600 community-based education and screening programs during 2007. Planned Parenthood received less than 1% of that money, she said.
The exact amount donated to Planned Parenthood is unclear: less than $700,000.

I don’t deny that but, if they’re contributing to the biggest abortion provider in the nation, how can we continue to support it?

And, if not, why would so many pro-life organizations single them out as doing so?

Try planned parenthood’s site.

plannedparenthood.org/ppaustin/files/Texas%20Capital%20Region/SusanGKomenGrant.pdf

This is just a few of the references, When I put Komen in on planned parenthood’s search bar, I got 38 hits!

Breaking news…
Diocese issues new statement
about Komen for the Cure

Published: March 6, 2008

The following statement was issued March 6, 2008 by the Rev. Msgr. J. Gaston Hebert, Diocesan Administrator.

**POSITION PAPER ON SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE **

On February 7, 2008, the Respect Life Apostolate of the Diocese of Little Rock issued a position statement saying that it “neither supports nor encourages participation in activities that benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.” This position was based upon what were believed to be “facts,” which upon further study have turned out not to be true.
As administrator of the diocese, I had been assured that 25% of the money given here in Arkansas goes to the national Komen foundation, which provided grants to Planned Parenthood, a major provider of abortions. If that were true, money donated in Arkansas could have indirectly funded abortions. Regardless of the exceptional work done by Komen to help detect, treat, and prevent breast cancer, the good accomplished would not have been a legitimate reason to participate in the death of unborn children. Therefore, I directed our Respect Life Apostolate to prepare a position statement indicating the moral problem in supporting the Komen foundation. However, the reality is that the national Komen foundation does NOT give grants to Planned Parenthood –- and, therefore, money given to Komen in Arkansas does NOT, even indirectly, fund abortion. Thus, my major reason for releasing the position statement was NOT valid.

Maybe Little Rock needs to get a Bishop appointed soon…

So was he right the first time or now?
The first time.

I have know the like between Komen and the death merchants for a long time and will not contribute to the. It is the same reason I will not contribute to the United Way.

Yes, they say they do not contribute directly to abortions but that is false logic. Their funding frees up other funds to be used for abortions. This may seem to be indirect, but there is direct consequences to their actions.

Komen gives money that people raised to help find a cure, to Planned Parenthood. There’s no denying it. Don’t forget the increased risk for Breast Cancer with the use of the PILL.

I have to avoid all pink ribbon items during October because of Susan B. Komen.

THERE is NO medical link between breast cancer and abortion.

If you oppose abortion, then oppose it.

Don’t bring in bad medicine.

Hypocrisy is normal for the left. Yes, there is a direct correlation between abortions and breast cancer. When anyone brings that link up they are demonized by those who see them as a threat to their murderous agenda. Plain and simple, abortion is murder and, in many cases, it has more than one victim.

Denying the link between abortion and breast cancer is both bad medicine and junk science.

No, isn’t. Five years ago, the National Cancer Institute reviewed the studies, and concluded that it is well established that “Induced abortion is not associated with an increase in breast cancer risk.”

I am not sure why people continue to cling to the idea of a supposed link between abortion and breast cancer, but I suspect it is because they are against abortion and are looking for any argument they can use against it.

Little Rock, Mar. 7, 2008 (CWNews.com) - The Diocese of Little Rock, Arkansas, has retracted a call for Catholics to avoid involvement with a fundraising effort for efforts to fight breast cancer.

In February, Msgr. J. Gaston Hebert, the administrator of the Little Rock diocese (which is currently without a bishop) had issued a statement saying that the Church could not support participation in the “Komen for a Cure” fundraiser, because the Komen foundation provides funding for Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider. But after meeting with officials of Komen for a Cure, Msgr. Hebert has been satisfied that the local fundraising effort does not support Planned Parenthood.

The report on which he based his February policy announcement was in error, Msgr. Hebert disclosing, and “the national Komen foundation does not give grants to Planned Parenthood.” He concluded: “Thus my major reason for releasing the position statement was not valid.”

This priest needs to do a bit more research. Komen DOES give funds to planned parenthood, there’s no denying it.

Good show, Dale.

By continuing to support the spurious link between abortion and breast concern, people weaken their own arguments against abortion.

hmmm… I did not know “spurious” meant “not meeting the liberal agenda”.
