On September 11th 2001 the United States response to the war on terror began. Not with a launch of ballistic missiles, not with the landings of thousands of troops on a foreign shore, not with speeches designed to inspire. The US response began in much the same way as the American Revolution - a small group of ordinary people gathered extraordinary courage and fought back. This happened aboard United Flight 93 in the skies above Pennsylvania - mere minutes flying time from Washington DC.
This Sunday The Discovery Channel will present The Flight That Fought Back - the story of those heroes. I’ve just finished watching an advance copy of the DVD, and let me take this moment to express my thanks to the folks who sent it. It’s truly an honor to have watched it. Thank you for telling this story.
To those reading this: Watching it once is not enough. When the DVD becomes available, buy it. The Discovery Channel will donate the profits to the Flight 93 National Memorial fund - an effort to create a lasting remembrance, the design for which was just selected this week. (Update: see below. Hold off on that purchase…)
This is a story with power, it will move you, and I think after watching the film you’ll find yourself in the state I’m in, unable to find any words that can express the experience.
