I am grateful that the Bishop was kind to this man – I am glad he reached out to him and tended to the man’s needs. I can understand the man’s hurt and anger, I suspect he dropped the lawsuit because the Bishop gave him what he REALLY needed. It seems the man in question wasn’t trying to push a political agenda, he was doing what he was supposed to do, and STILL being pushed away from his faith, treated like a leper.
I think it’s important to remember that certain aspects of the CC teachings are easier for some to live with than others. I feel sympathy for this man, I can not imagine what it has been like for him – I am so fortunate that the person I love is of the opposite sex, that we are able to be married and our love is celebrated and encouraged. This part of living as a Catholic is easy for me, hard for him
I struggle with the CC teachings on birth control. That’s hard for me – others don’t struggle, they have all the resources they need to not worry about providing for another child. The woman who has had a hysterectomy (although she may not be happy about that, or even might be heartbroken about it) doesn’t have to struggle with the issue as I do, she can be with her husband whenever he or she wants, with no fear of an unexpected pregnancy. And I don’t struggle as much with it as a woman who has a serious health issue would, perhaps.
The person who is in a dysfunctional marriage struggles as those of us in happy marriages don’t…etc etc. We should try to keep people in our prayers, to be sensitive to their struggles and champion them in their successes, not gossip about them, and certainly not dismiss them altogether, as some posters here are wont to do.
