Hello and Happy New Year to everyone!

I have been meaning to post this for quite some time but haven’t gotten around to it. I have a hard time getting up, at 'em, and moving in the morning. This creates problems since I take my Kindergartener to school in the morning. She was late twice last semester and often barely makes it to class on time.

I have set up different alarms to get me up. Sometimes I can get up fast but then stand there in a daze in the bathroom not brushing teeth, shaving, etc.

Any suggestions on how to get up move faster in the AM?

Thanks.

Hi. You might try going to bed earlier and on a regular schedule, using a lightbox alarm system which will mimic sunrise in your bedroom, and putting a really annoying alarm clock that will not shut off across the room from your bed.
Maybe a coffeemaker with a timer so you are instantly rewarded for grabbing that bathrobe and heading for the kitchen?
Blessings to you and to all parents. Amen.

Get a coffee pot that you can set to make coffee at a certain time. If you have to be up at 7, have your coffee pot start at 6:30. Wake up at that time, get a cup, and allow yourself to go back to bed and drink it while laying there and waking up. By the time you have to start getting up and getting ready, you should be more awake and moving a bit faster.

I’ve been using this trick since I was a freshman in college.

My suggestions would be to eliminate caffeine consumption after 3pm, turning off cell phones/TVs about 30 minutes before you want to fall asleep, make sure you’re getting as close to 8 hours of sleep as possible, set an alarm across the room so you have to get out of bed to turn it off, and give yourself a serious negative punishment if she’s late due to your behavior. Maybe no TV for you for a week if she’s late or something along these lines.

I would agree with PPs about getting to bed earlier. Maybe even shortly after your child goes to bed. You are probably still in a deep sleep when your alarm goes off. The best thing to do is to re-set your body clock to an earlier sleep-wake pattern.

Also, set up a good AM routine for yourself so that you always do the same things and you don’t have to make decisions for the first few minutes.

Totally gonna start trying this…mornings are a beast for me, at times.

I like the coffee suggestion, BlueEyedLady.👍

Also, if you don’t have a cat, do get one. Preferably a fat one.

Nothing will wake you up as well as gasping for air and choking on fur when 8 pounds of purring lard deposits itself on your face.🙂

find work or a project or something that you enjoy, or maybe just get into a habit of walking for an hour in the morning. you often hear people say such and such is what gets me up in the morning… …i’m not sure they mean it literally, but it could be done.

:yup::rotfl:

You could also shut the cat out of the bedroom and then it will wake you up meowing outside the door at about 5:30 am every morning.

Set up one alarm next to your bed, and another alarm for ten minutes later across the room. When the bedside alarm clock wakes you up and you reach for the snooze, the other alarm clock will not let you keep snoozing for long.

I agree that it’s possible you could have sleep apnea. But IMO, you’re just not a morning person. My husband is just like you–he has to literally drag himself out of bed, and he’s so groggy that he can’t make any decisions in the A.M. He had sleep studies several years ago and now uses a C-pap, but this hasn’t made a difference in his morning grogginess. He’s a zombie in the A.M. If he had his choice of sleep patterns, he would stay up until about 3:00 a.m., and then sleep until noon. That’s just what he did in college.

However, at night, he is as lively as a kitten! Wide-awake, alert, and at his best.

And of course, I’m just the opposite. I usually wake up a half-hour before my alarm clock goes off, and I’m wide-awake at 4:00 am. But at night, I’m dozing in on the sofa by 8:00 pm. In fact, by 3:00 p.m., I’m already looking forward to bedtime.

As you can imagine, I hated college, because no one in college is an early-morning person!

It works out great when we do a road trip. I do the early a.m. driving, and then when I start losing it in the afternoon, he takes over.

So you’re probably just an owl instead of a lark!

I forgot to put up this tool for people who hit the snooze button over and over. This alarm clock sounds, and then falls off the table and rolls around the room so you can’t simply hit the snooze button.

Clocky

You should figure out your sleep cycles. Their is a theory (I saw in Scientific American) typical sleep cycle is 90 minutes. When most people try to get 7 or 8 hours sleep they are actually fighting against a natural sleep cycle.

haha! I need that one. I hate waking up early… I’m a night owl and my hubby’s the morning person/early to bed.

Thanks, everyone, for your helpful hints and suggestions! 👍

I agree that I am not a morning person. Time to set up the coffee pot to reward myself in the AM! 🙂

8lbs! That’s just a kitten! My cat was about 15lbs and lay across the top of my head (on my hair) at night. It was fine in the winter, but horrible in the summer! 😃

Good suggestions all around so far. Setting up an evening routine and getting to bed at the same time every night (and very close to it on weekend nights also) will help you get enough sleep. Morning routines and that first cup of coffee will help you get up and going in the morning.

Does your daughter get up early naturally? Many young children do. If so, maybe she can knock on your door when she’s up to help you get moving. If not, make sure you leave enough time in the morning to allow her a good morning routine. Rushing out the door without a good breakfast and still half asleep in not a good habit for her either.

Neither my daughter nor my wife get up early naturally. I am the designated early morning person. As you said, I need to get up & moving to allow my daughter enough time in the morning. On most days, we are rushing like mad out the door with my wife shaking her head while she takes care of our son. It’s a domino effect.

Bleh! I am like this too. I haven’t had a job for about two months now. When I have a job and a routine, I’m OK. I don’t love getting up early, but I can do it. But when I don’t have a job, I start staying up later and later, and sleeping later and later. Lately I’ve been going to sleep around 3 and getting up around 11. Now, that sounds like I’m sleeping super late, but since I go to bed so late, it’s still 8 hours of sleep. But even when I go to bed earlier, say at 1 or 2, I still can’t seem to make myself get up earlier than 11. I HATE it. I hate sleeping half the day.

I know what you mean. That’s why, for me, watching TV at night sends me down the slippery slope of getting to bed late, not wanting to get up in the morning, etc.

Yup. For me, it’s not watching TV, it’s reading or playing on the computer. I told my husband the other day to make me get up when he left for work at 9:30, and he said he would, but then at 9:30 the next day when he was getting ready, I was halfway between sleep and wake, thinking, “Please forget, please forget, please don’t wake me up.” He did forget! hahaha

Then I woke up at 11 and was sad I slept so late.

It’s like I’m two different people!
