As we have recently been forcibly reminded, the Roman Catholic Church holds it better for the cries of raped and violated children to be ignored, and for the excuses and alibis of their rapists and torturers indulged, and for a host of dirty and wilful untruths to be manufactured wholesale, and for the funds raised ostensibly for the poor to be paid out in hush money and shameful bribery, rather than that one tiny indignity or inconvenience be visited on the robed majesty of a man-made church or any limit set to its self-proclaimed right to be judge in its own cause.

Wow, a paragraph-length sentence. That’s pretty impressive. :o

Less impressive is the hyperbole of his claims. Its stuff we have all heard before.

I guess Christopher Hitchens has a regular column at Slate. No doubt he has a following, but at this point he isn’t winning any minds.
 
What can you do? People are uneducated. The Church is the biggest protector against sex crimes. The fox is mad at the farmer for guarding the hen house.
 
Hitchens is an hysteric. That’s really all there is to it. I don’t care enough about his rabid rants to comment on every part of the article, but the beginning itself is telling enough:

First he gives that Newman quote and portrays it as extreme, even though it’s not. It’s basically a more poetic version of the same thing Socrates said: “It is better to suffer an injustice than to commit one,” something believed by every morally sane man since the human race has existed, Christian or pagan, deist or atheist, etc. He also calls it “totalitarian,” which is a very specific word with a very specific meaning that has nothing to do with that quote.

The rest of the article follows suit.

If I were a better Christian, I would feel pity for Hitchens and for his mind so tortured by vitriol. Unfortunately, all I can muster is dismissal and contempt. Oh, well.
