According to OSAS the saved can just eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die and will go to heaven no matter what we do, we can’t lose salvation.

JL: beleevr is a OSAS Protestant, is he now an unsaved pagan.

You criticize me for giving an opinion about your preacher friend’s salvation [after you asked us] … and here you again ask me to speculate on 1BELEIVER.

Please… be consistent with your debate tactics/rules. Don’t be a grenade thrower, practice consistent rules of fair play.

Which we all do, many times daily. By your accounting of Salvation … you would be saved, then lost, then saved, etc multiple times daily, … provided you took the time to repent after each sin. TALK ABOUT A LEGALIST !!! Please …reconsider.

Your profile says “Catholic.” I assume you know the difference between mortal sin (sins committed freely and on purpose), venial sins (sins committed by accident), and faults (habits which, though not actually sins, don’t bring the person closer to Jesus).

If you commit a mortal sin (and hopefully you don’t do that very often) you separate yourself from God, and you would go to Hell if you died having not repented of it yet. We go to Confession to restore our relationship with God after committing a mortal sin.

Paul is speaking of Apostates.
Right. An apostate is someone who has been a practicing Christian, but isn’t any more. (Someone who has never been a Christian is called a pagan, or an unbeliever. You cannot become apostate from something you have never believed in.)

Notice that St. Paul says they had been enlightened - they knew Jesus, they understood the teachings of the Church - but now, they have fallen away.
Theoretical Christians, ones seeking their own glory. They have been instructed in the gospel … yet never became God’s election.
You cannot receive Enlightenment without first receiving Election. It is simply not possible. One receives Catechism (head knowledge), Election (heart-awakening), and then Enlightenment (heart-knowledge), in that order. If they had been enlightened, therefore, it means that they had received Catechesis (the teachings) and the Election (the awakening) before that.

We both agree … Judas was an apostate, a turncoat. Christ had tutored him, he had been baptized, he knew the person Christ. But, did he love the God-man Christ ?

He was not a true Disciple, he was exposed to Christ and being prepared for service as an Apostle of the Church. But, he was not ‘given’ to Christ by the Father. Make of this what you will … but, Judas was not a true sheep or prospective shepherd for the flock. Even the ‘seed’ of God can spoil and become rancid … if it is not supported by the Spirit of Christ. Judas never put down deep roots into Christ. He never grew to produce FRUIT of spirit. His knowledge of our Lord was superficial … he was still more concerned about MONEY and his own skin. We was worried Christ would be captured and he might as well. Best for him to make friends with the enemy and save his own neck … yet, he ended up with a noose around his neck in final analysis.

At some point he must have, or else why would he have given up everything to follow Him? 🤷

All these things did happen - but Judas did not become a follower of Christ for personal gain, since there was nothing to gain, at the time. Each and every one of the 12 gave up their family ties, their jobs, their homes, and every other material consideration, to wander with Jesus throughout the whole country of Israel. So, there must have been a spark of faith, at the beginning. Who can say how it got quenched, or even when (since it seems clear that during the last several months of Christ’s ministry, Judas was already out of the program, and probably only stuck around because he had no place else to go).

However, that having been said, the writer of the Letter to the Hebrews was not writing to Judas, but to second-generation converts who had gone through the conversion process, who had been taught in person by the Apostles, and who had been carefully screened for membership in the Church. Since Christianity was illegal by that time (since both St. Paul and St. Peter had already undergone the death sentence for their preaching) it’s not likely that any of these people had joined the Church to make business connections, or to impress a member of the opposite sex - their faith must have been real when they made their original Profession of Faith at their Confirmation ceremony.

JL: I can’t state it any better or more clearly than jmcrae has already done. The only thing I would add, I try to go to confession on the first Saturday of the month. NOT because I have committed MORTAL sin, or MUST go. But to gain grace and strength from the sacrament. Along with advise, to better deal with and overcome my temptations, to combat my inclination to sin. If I am having a bad period with temptation I go more often. To me your statement is strong evidence you have never been a practicing Catholic.

QUOTE=jlhargus;6438976] Simple scriptural TRUTH would suffice, yet you have none. For OSAS to work you must contradict scriptures, including [Jn17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. 12 WHILE I WAS WITH THEM **IN THE WORLD, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and NONE OF THEM IS LOST, BUT the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.]

That’s a really big BUT, to miss, yet you left it out, (pun intended) why? Because it contradicts OSAS? For Judas to be LOST he had, first, to be one of Christ’s, otherwise he could NOT have been LOST, could he? Even without the BUT, Jesus is speaking of ONLY the apostles and he KEPT them, WHILE HE WAS IN THE WORLD, BUT one. There IS ABSOLUTELY nothing here that even IMPLIES OSAS, in fact it TEACHES quite the OPPOSITE.
QUOTE=brb3;6450001] No, scripture describes accurately the facts as we now know them. As long as Christ was with the 11, they followed him. One in training to be a good shepherd for the Church, turned out to be a worthless shepherd, and left the flock early to rejoin the 3 False Shepherd Temple groups described in OT book Zechariah Chp 11-12. The other 11 briefly fell away after Christ was taken / killed … but, they were Recovered and Perservered in Christ’s Church.
What the scriptures say … indeed happened.

JL: First notice your contradiction, AND LEFT THE FLOCK, for Judas to leave the flock he had to first be IN THE FLOCK. Doesn’t that contradict OSAS and your particular brand of OSAS, they will ALWAYS return?
Second I don’t go looking for needles in a hay stack or on wild goose chases, if you have A POINT to make using Zechariah Chp 11-12, then I suggest you put forth your POINT, with evidence, and NOT just a statement. A statement made without evidence is evidence the statement is false. By the way I did read Zechariah Chp 11-12, so I eagerly await your POINT and evidence for that POINT.

How can one, who was never FIRST RENEWED, be RENEWED AGAIN? The text explicitly teaches, they are ENLIGHTENED, tasted the heavenly gift, tasted eternal life in the Eucharist. If they were not saved they would NOT have TASTED the heavenly gift of eternal life in the Eucharist, but tasted damnation, NOT discerning the body of Christ. They have tasted the powers of the world to come. What IS the POWER of the world to come? GOD. Unless of course unsaved then they would have tasted the wrath of God. They are MADE PARTAKERS of the HOLY SPIRIT. How can a non-believer partake of the Holy Spirit?
A theoretical Christian would remain in the SAME unsaved state in which they have always been. Their state would never have changed, from unsaved to saved, therefore they COULD NEVER fall away, or APOSTATIZE, from the faith they NEVER POSSESSED. The unsaved have fallen from NOTHING.QUOTE]

He was not a true Disciple, he was exposed to Christ and being prepared for service as an Apostle of the Church. But, he was not ‘given’ to Christ by the Father. Best for him to make friends with the enemy and save his own neck … yet, he ended up with a noose around his neck in final analysis.
Let’s analyze what you’ve said here.
  1. Judas was not a true disciple.
Please show in scripture where it says this. I searched and cannot find any such reference.
  1. He was not given to Christ by the Father.
I’ll help you out with this one. Judas was in fact given to Jesus by the Father. We know this to be true by way of the following:

–Judas is referred to as “elect.”(Gk,eklegomai - Strong’s word # 1586 – Lk 6:13, Jn 6:70; cf. Mk 13:20, Jn 13:18, 15:16,19, Acts 1:2), and then falls away and is damned.

–John 17:12 says “While I was with them, I kept them in thy name, which thou hast given me; I have guarded them, and none of **them **is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled.” Notice the reference to Judas. Judas is in the same group given to Jesus by the Father.
  1. Judas never put down deep roots into Christ.
Where does scripture tell us this? He could have put down deep roots into Christ and still turned from Christ just as Peter did with his denial.
  1. He never grew to produce FRUIT of spirit.
Where does scripture make such a statement and what is the evidence? It seems to me that this is quite contrary to the scriptures because scripture describes Judas in the following ways:

–Judas was one of those that believed at the marriage feast of Cana[Jn 2:11]. Judas is present when Peter makes his public confession of faith and Jesus is revealed as the son of God[Matt 16:15-18].

–Like the rest of the twelve, Judas has healed the sick and cast out demons while preaching that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Judas has done these things by the power of the Holy Spirit[Matt 6:8-13, Mark 3:14-19 and Mark 6:13].

–Judas was also present when Jesus gave the apostles as a group the “power to bind and loose” in Matthew 18:18. Judas believed and is one of the saved until he “betrayed” Jesus.
  1. His knowledge of our Lord was superficial
Where does scripture indicate such a thing? Why is it that such a thing should be assumed to be true? Judas spent three years being taught directly by our savior. Somehow I think he really knew Jesus quite well. A betrayer does not have to be ignorant; in fact, it makes more sense to be called a traitor if you do have knowledge of the one you betray.

Judas met all of the criteria under Protestant doctrine for salvation and OSAS. OSAS proponents universally argue salvation by faith alone. If that is the case, then OSAS is self contradictory in the case of Judas. Scripture explicitly tells us that Judas was a "believer."

We find this explicit statement in In Matthew 14 where we are told that Jesus tells the disciples[that is the twelve] to get into the boat and to cross to the other side of the sea. Jesus then walks on the water and Peter joins him and begins to sink beneath the waves as his faith falters. Jesus then helps Peter stay afloat and then they both get back into the boat. Once in the boat scripture tells us the following:
Matthew 14:33
“And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’”
Judas worshiped Jesus and declared his faith by stating that Jesus was truly the son of God. Judas was a believer but he “became” a betrayer.[Luke 6:16]

Judas is never called a “false believer” a “believer without root” or any other such term. Judas “became” a betrayer and thus the son of perdition*.

I hope this helps.*

brb3 in Christ,

You apparently disagree with our view of the book of Hebrews vis-a-vis OSAS. I’ll give you my view of it for whatever it’s worth.
Heb 2: 1. “ THEREFORE WE must pay the closer attention to what **we **have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and “
The author over and over uses the word “we” and continues to do so in the letter. While there are many things to quote in Hebrews, we can get to the heart of the matter by focusing on some things in Chapter five that clearly establish that the author is addressing believing Christians.

Hebrews 5:12-14 says:
“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need some one to teach you again the first principles of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food; for every one who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their faculties trained by practice to distinguish good from evil.”
Now please notice that the author tells those receiving his letter that by now they ought to be teachers, but that they are immature. He does not say that they are non-believers. Instead, the criticism of immaturity is explained by the fact that they are “unskilled in the word of righteousness.” They still need practice to distinguish good from evil, even though they should already be passed that. It is then that chapter six begins and the author warns these same people of apostasy. Right after the warning the author returns to exhorting them saying,
“And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness in realizing the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”[Hebrews 6:11-12]
Those addressed in the book of Hebrews are addressed as true believing converts. Yet they receive serious warnings. They receive these warnings because there is the possibility of losing salvation. Likewise, the author again warns these same Jewish converts to Christianity in chapter 10:19-30 saying:
Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way which he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. For if we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire which will consume the adversaries. A man who has violated the law of Moses dies without mercy at the testimony of two or three witnesses. **How much worse punishment **do you think will be deserved by the man who has spurned the Son of God, and profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and outraged the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.”
Please notice all of the words that I gave “bold” and “underline” emphasis. We have confidence/assurance, but we are also warned. And once again the inspired author uses the collective “we”. The author, himself, is included and surely no one would contend that the inspired author is not a “true believer.” The warning at the end is significant. A believer that turns away will actually receive a greater punishment for spurning the son of God and profaning the blood of the covenant by which he was “sanctified.” The Lord will judge “his people”.

All of this denies OSAS.

I hope you find this helpful and God bless.

You make a strong case here, as always 🙂 This is definately the strongest argument to make against OSAS. And, I was convinced of this by you and others about a year ago.

However, I recently came across some OT prophesy around 6 weeks ago … that gave me some pause on this subject. Zechariah Chps 11 & 13 paint picture of Judas as a ‘worthless’ shepherd. Not a valued shepherd who suffered a brief lapse of faith.

Exegete for me Zechariah 11:7-17 & 13:7 … and show me where Judas is suggested as ever counted as a true sheep.

I caught … and defused it. Lets move on to more productive dialogue 😛 For starters … exegete Heb. 6:4-6 for us 😃
JL: My view of Hb6:4-6 is as follows and your view then follows after. if I were an exegete I would do so, since I am not, my view will have to suffice. Are you suggesting your view is exegetical?

[Hb6:4 For it is impossible for THOSE WHO WERE ONCE ENLIGHTENED, AND have TASTED OF THE HEAVENLY GIFT, and were MADE PARTAKERS OF THE HOLY GHOST, 5 And have TASTED THE GOOD WORD OF GOD, AND THE POWERS OF THE WORLD TO COME, 6 IF THEY SHALL FALL AWAY, TO RENEW THEM AGAIN UNTO REPENTANCE; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.]

They have tasted the GOOD WORD OF GOD, if they were unbelievers they would have tasted foolishness, 1Cor1:18 the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. They are MADE PARTAKERS of the HOLY SPIRIT. How can a non-believer partake of the Holy Spirit?

Whether apostates or prodigals (wasters), doesn’t really matter. Paul is speaking OF those who FALL AWAY, FORMERLY ENLIGHTENED BELIEVERS, who tasted the Holy Spirit. Paul IS WRITING to FAITHFUL ENLIGHTENED BELIEVERS**, WARNING, them about FALLING AWAY. Why would Paul waste his time writing and WARNING believers, who CAN’T fall away in the first place? [END of my view.]

They don’t really possess the indwelling H.S. … they don’t abide/persevere IN CHRIST. END OF your view.

JL: My comment on your view follows;

QUOTE=jlhargus;6425865] Where does the text, in Hb6:4-6, say or even imply apostates are theoretical Christians? Where does the text say or imply they seek their own glory? Where does the text say or imply they never became God’s election? Where does the text say or imply they didn’t receive the H. S. when baptized? Where does the text say or imply they received the Eucharist wrongly? Where does the text say or imply they don’t really posses the indwelling H.S.? Where does the text say or imply they don’t abide/persevere IN CHRIST? Those are only your words, which contradict the scriptural text.

A theoretical Christian would remain in the SAME unsaved state in which they have always been. Their state would never have changed, from unsaved to saved, therefore they COULD NEVER fall away, or APOSTATIZE, from the faith they NEVER POSSESSED. How can a non-believer partake of the Holy Spirit?**

When I witness to people during street ministry, about Jesus, a great many of them know about the death of Christ, without the aid of a crucifix! What they want to know, is how to have a personal relationship with Christ, how to walk and talk with Him each day. I guess it is the diffrence between our beliefs, as I see it, I don’t have a NEED to wear a crucifix. Was talking to a catholic on Sunday, and he was wearing one; it repulsed me, but ZIdidn’t say anything to him.
I wonder if during the Christmas season if you see a Nativity scene with the baby Jesus in the manger does this repulse you.they must not know that Jesus grew up to be a man.or if you see a painting with Jesus surrounded by people on a hillside preaching to them that must make you sick, knowing Jesus is in Heaven sitting beside Our Father, and not here on earth. I sat at Mass tonite staring at the Crucifix above the alter and had tears in my eyes thinking of the depths of His love, and the lengths he would go to just for our salvation.and you have the gall to say you were repulsed at the sight of a Crucifix.I will pray for you tonite that the scales may be removed from your eyes…

You make a strong case here, as always 🙂

…I recently came across some OT prophesy around 6 weeks ago … that gave me some pause on this subject.

The passages never really refer to Judas as a shepherd let alone a worthless shepherd. Instead there are three shepherds that are referred to and most commentaries explain these three as the chief priests, the scribes, and the pharisees. The only other shepherd that is directly mentioned is the good shepherd. Obviously, the good shepherd is Jesus. There is an allusion to Judas by way of the “thirty shekels of silver” but this reference is indirect. The direct connection of the reference is to those who** pay **the “thirty pieces” and to Jesus who is the object of the purchase. Those who pay the money are the three shepherds referred to in the passage. It is they that are said to have trafficked in the sheep and detested Jesus. Moreover, it is they that are the object of the annulling of the covenant. Finally, in verses 14-17 it says:
Then I broke my second staff Union, annulling the brotherhood between Judah and Israel. Then the Lord said to me, “Take once more the implements of a worthless shepherd. For lo, I am raising up in the land a shepherd who does not care for the perishing, or seek the wandering, or heal the maimed, or nourish the sound, but devours the flesh of the fat ones, tearing off even their hoofs. Woe to my worthless shepherd, who deserts the flock! May the sword smite his arm and his right eye! Let his arm be wholly withered, his right eye utterly blinded!” An Oracle
Please note that the annulling of the brotherhood between Judah and Israel refers to something much bigger than Judas. Judas never deserted the flock…he betrayed Jesus. The sword did not smote Judas, his arm didn’t wither, or his eye utterly blinded. These terms refer to Israel and its leadership. These are prophetic terms speaking of what will become of Israel at the hands of the shepherd that will be raised up to punish them. This is a prophecy of the coming punishment at the hands of the Romans when the Jewish leadership will be destroyed and the temple raised. Only a remnant survives.

The reference to a shepherd in Zechariah 13:7 is likewise a reference to the Jewish leadership and not specifically to Judas. Judas was not Jesus’s shepherd nor was he ever referred to as a shepherd to the flock of Jesus. Peter is the only one that was ever given recognition of that kind by Jesus. In John’s gospel, after Jesus rose from the dead, Jesus tells Peter to feed his sheep and tend the lambs. This is really the only reference of this kind that alludes to an apostle as a shepherd, and no one would assume that any of Zechariah refers to Peter. The term shepherd in these prophesies either refers to Jesus or it refers to the Jewish leadership depending upon the context.

Most importantly, however, is that even if it referred to Judas directly as a shepherd it would not help the case of OSAS. There is nothing in the passage that hints at whether or not the worthless shepherds were ever previously considered good or if they were ever saved prior to becoming worthless. All we really know is that they annuled the covenant by their trafficking in the sheep and by having paid thirty sheckels of silver as the price to buy the good shepherd. I personally fail to see how this set of passages helps the case for OSAS. The “annulling of the covenant”, on the other hand, suggests the loss of salvation previously available.

God bless.

I think you misunderstood 1believer. He is a very committed on fire Christian like yourself who loves Jesus. He is not “repulsed” by the cross in the sense that you think. It just makes his heart suffer to realize how much Jesus suffered to purchase his soul by His blood. He does not like to meditate on all the pains that His Beloved Lord endured to purchase freedom. This avoidance of the crucifix is also an act of love, as it illustrates how much a person does not want to cause Jesus pain by their sins.
