Believe it or not! A parish Church turns into a mosque every Friday, for the Muslims brothers and to offer their customary prayers. This isn’t a sequence from any Bollywood film, but a reality in the parish of Our Lady of Assumption of Ponzano near Venice, the romantic city of Italy. The pastor of the parish, Don Aldo Danieli, 69, affirms, “It’s useless to speak of religious dialogue and then bang the door on their face. Pope John Paul II addressed them as, ‘dear Muslim brothers’. How can we close our church doors to them?”

At Ponzano, in the province of Treviso, live some 11,500 people of whom 232 families are immigrants, making their number roughly 650. These are mainly immigrants from North African countries and Eastern Europe. Two years ago, Don Aldo decided to open the doors of the church to these Muslim immigrants and keep a portion of his own parochial house including a kitchen . . . at their disposal. On Fridays an average of 200 Muslim believers gather in the church and offer prayers. But in the month of Ramadan, the number swells to 1000-1200. “They requested me and I said yes, moreover, the kitchen and hall were a home for spiders.”

The decision of Don Aldo has disturbed the peace of mind of more than a few parishioners. The protests of even the local bishop and priests have reached his ears. “I haven’t asked the express permission of the bishop, because it’s an act of charity. No permission is needed to do charity. For the rest, I am older than the bishop and been his professor in the seminary too. Even if had prohibited me, I wouldn’t be obliged to obey him,” Don Aldo is firm in his resolve. He does not hesitate to proclaim, “Better praying Muslims than non praying Christians. If you brand me a racist, you are wrong”. In the last two years Don Aldo has received a number of emails and letters advising him to “remain with his own flock.” The letters cautioned him, “These people come as immigrants and then claim the place for themselves and throw us out.” Don Aldo has taken into confidence the Parish Pastoral Council and is unrelenting. “The pope has exhorted to open wide the doors to Christ: Christ lives in Muslims too.”

Those two sentences right there tell you everything you need to know about this priest.

while I think is obedience quote is out of line, i agree that the Church should be open to things like this.

What’s next? Wiccans meeting in the parish hall? A parish shouldn’t be open to ANYTHING that contradicts the Church’s beliefs.

in my view, as long as they arent defacing anything in the church, and, as i would assume, mostly just using the space as a place to accomadate lots of people, in an area of Italy that probably does not have the open space for building like places like Montana does

Senor Salsa, a little suggested reading:

What does the Catechism say about Muslims?

The Church’s relationship with Muslims. The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place among whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day (Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 841, quoting Lumen Gentium 16, November 21, 1964).

I don’t see how what the catechism says justifies allowing Muslims to use a Catholic church for their services. I wouldn’t have as much of an issue with Muslims doing this in a protestant church since there is no tabernacle with the real presence.

This is why truth is so important–the priest has a false idea of love. Directly providing an outlet for objective sin (in this case denying the divinity of Christ and treating the word of Mohammed as God’s word), even if that sin is in good faith, is never an act of charity, but rather of cruelty.

“I will not obey” is the rallying cry of the deceiver who offers the world perverted and distorted “love” instead of true love.

Yes, that’s true, but that is for us common ground to build towards authentic unity salvation in the truth of Christ, not to confirm the soul endangering errors of Islam.

Red flags should go up when someone refuses to obey the Bishop.

“The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.” Luke 10:16

This priest has some major pride issues.

Yes, indeed. But we aren’t sure whether or not he actually did disobey his bishop. Apparently
Bishop Andrea Mazzocato of Treviso, ordered the pastor of Ponzano Veneto to instruct the pastor to discontinue any apparent sponsorship of Muslim services

The Catholic World News article is dated on the day following the article in La Repubblica. I am guessing the publishing of the article in Italy spurred the bishop to action. But there seems to be no followup story so we can’t tell if the pastor defied the order or not.

Please then explain why they are building mega mosques in other parts of Italy. I think that this is sheer naivety (to be charitable) on he priest’s side.

He hasn’t disobeyed, but made it clear that he would if told to stop.

If this is done in the Parish Hall I would have no issue. If this is done in the Sanctuary it might be an issue.

From reading the Italian news I understood that it is the parish hall and not the sanctuary. However, to me this is still a bad sign.

Like someone else mentioned, Muslims are building mosques everywhere. Why did he have to do that? Muslims wouldn’t be so accommodating if the circumstances were reversed. Here in the states Muslims have taken over common prayer rooms in colleges, partitioned them to segregate the sexes, filled with radical literature preaching hatred of non-Muslims, and intimidated other students into not using them.

If they’re hard up for space to build mosques, I know of several places with lots of room—Libya; Algeria; Syria; Saudi Arabia…

Yes, becuase the better choice then loaning them a meeting hall to use is to encourage Islamic Theocracies that opress anybody who disagrees with the leader of the moment.

and as for the thought that there might be a tabernacle in the sam room, does that mean we shouldnt allow protastants into the Sanctuary, as they dont believe in the Real Presence?

Allowing protestants in a church during Mass is completely different from allowing a Muslim service in the presence of the tabernacle.
