I am looking for this booklet written by Fr. Bill Mitchell. The Kings House here in Phoenix is looking for me. We have a 18 year old son contemplating getting baptized Morman.
We are in agony and grasping for infomation.

If you truely want perspective on what your son may be thinking/experiencing, you should try the book “Catholic Roots Mormon Harvest”

Obviously it’s bias is LDS, but they do try to explain it from a Catholics perspective. You can put that knowledge to use as you are guided.

Don’t bother with Catholic Roots, Mormon Harvest.
It is an atrocious book that falsely portrays Catholic teachings (such as the Trinity).
The female member of the couple that wrote the book even claims to have been a ‘lay Franciscan nun’, not a ‘lay Franciscan’, but a ‘lay Franciscan nun’.
As I’m sure you know, there is no such thing.
It is doubtful that the couple that wrote the book where ever practising Catholics and they were definitely not knowledgeable ones.

I shall have your son in my prayers every day. Make sure you have him in yours.

maybe try
“Inside Mormonism” by Isaiah Bennett
and
“When Mormons Call” by Isaiah Bennett

Both available from Amazon or B&N.
Isaiah Bennett was a Catholic priest turned Mormon, turned Catholic again.

From what I hear, good stuff.

My question to your son would be “What is drawing you to the LDS church?”. I have found in my journey that when you really know what the Catholic Church teaches no other church’s teachings stand up. I fear your son does not have a very sound foundation in the Catholic Church.

Ditto…this was the book I was thinking about recommending.

You could als go the search engine of this site and type in Mormonism, Catholic written tracts about the LDS will come up.

A book will not stand up against the propaganda of well-trained in-your-face LDS agents. Face to face contact from those who love him, as opposed to those who may only want his membership, I think will be the key. Compare the fall in the garden (Genesis 3) with the goal of Mormon men: To be gods.

As well, remind him that the true Church is difficult to join and easy to leave. False faiths are easy to join and difficult to leave.

Go to mormonthink.com

Read just a little. It comprehensively rebuts all of Mormonism’s unique claims and false history, using Mormon sources and the amazing inconsistency of them, and incompatibility with both logic and science. Read it yourself and present it, or ask him to read it through, or at least several sections of it: if Mormonism is true, he has nothing to fear and his faith will carry him through, but if Mormonism is false, it will keep him from making a mistake.

Also, if that site doesn’t deal with it, get something about the canon of scripture and its closed nature, if debunking the obvious, absurd ahistorical ridiculousness of the Book of Mormon doesn’t do it, and prove that it’s not inspired against itself. Like the Lost 117 Pages, the Kinderhook Plates, and the Book of Abraham, amongst many others.

I am only twenty-one years old, and I can understand the attractiveness of the promise of being made a god of your own universe - until you realize that’s the same attractiveness that got Adam and Eve killed and ruined the human race. The religion is still ridiculous, and I can’t imagine even the most power-hungry could bring themselves to believe in it because it’s so obviously false - even for the promise of godhood. However, people are indoctrinated, as they are with everything else, and Mormonism is attractive because the community is so tight, so close, everyone’s so nice, etc. - this is called love bombing, and is used as a recruitment tactic in most cults. The Mormon missionaries I met offered to buy me a suit of clothes and help pay my rent the first time I saw them (I’m relatively poor and my clothes are in very bad condition: two pair of trousers that are sliced in to strings six or eight inches up, three t-shirts with barely- or non-mended holes, one blouse and one oversized, threadbare jacket, a coat with a tear in the shell, and shoes that at the time had the sole half fallen off of one - since then I’ve got a new pair of shoes, but not otherwise). When we live in an age that values relation over truth (the age of Facebook), Mormonism, no matter how patently false, remains appealing because of the relational/community value.

Not to mention that if your son is lonely, either for friendship or romance, the Mormons will have him married within less than a month or two after converting and going to a special “singles ward” designed to marry off people quickly - celibacy is viewed as a great sin in Mormonism.

It deals with Mormonism from a historical and scientific view most of the time. If that’s not enough, point him in my direction, and I can lay out an argument Contra Mormon - I have experience dealing with the missionaries - on metaphysical principles and first philosophy.

I will pray for you and him. Mormonism, and its founder and original leaders, is of the Devil.

Ave Maria,
Gratia plena
Dominus tecum.

Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
Et benedictus fructus ventris tui,
Iesus.

Sancta Maria,
Mater Dei,
Ora pro nobis peccatoribus
Nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.

Hail Mary, conceived without sin: pray for us who have recourse to thee.
Hail Mary, conceived without sin: pray for us who have recourse to thee
Hail Mary, conceived without sin: pray for us who have recourse to thee.

Credo in unum Deum,
Patrem omnipotentem,
Factorem caeli et terra,
Visibílium omnium et invisibilium.
Et in unum Dominum Iesum Christum,
Filium Dei Unigenitum,
Crucifixus etiam pro nobis sub Pontio Pilato;
Confíteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum.
Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum,
Et vitam ventúri saeculi.

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
The Only Begotten Son of God,
Begotten of the Father before all ages,
God from God, Light from Light
True God from True God,
Begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father:

Through him all things were made.

For us me and our salvation he came down from heaven,
And by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary
And became man.

For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate
He suffered death and was buried,
And rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended in to Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father
He will come again in glory to judge the quick and the dead
And his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the give of life,
Who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
Who with the Father and the son is worshiped (adored) and glorified,

Who has spoken through the prophets.
**
We believe in One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
We confess one baptism for the remission of sins,**
We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
And the life of the world to come.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it ever was, as it now is, unto the ages of ages.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: One God.

Amen.

Is there a girl involved? Possibly a female Mormon missionary?

We often hear stories of a potential convert becoming emotionally/romantically involved with a missionary.

Just make sure you cover all angles for where this is coming from.

My father converted to Mormanism later in life before he died. The truth is they are very nice people, however their beliefs are really weird if you check into what they teach behind closed doors. God was a created being who made it to godhood and rules with his many wives? Mr. Smith finds magic plates that tell him about giant epic wars fought here in America with war elephants less then 2000 years ago, yet there is not one shred of evidence for this? The garden of Eden was here in America? And don’t even get me started on there “magic underwear” 🤷

Yes, Eric Shuster made a few posts here. It was obvious that he didn’t know Catholicism at all.

Catholics Roots, as has been stated, is a horrible book. If you read the book, you wonder if they really knew the Catholic Church.

I think that’s the key to any Catholic becoming Mormon, or leaving the Church for any other faith. They either have to be completely unaware of true Catholic teachings, or they may have some kind of grudge against the Church for some reason (like judging the Church itself by the actions of some of its members). In some cases, it might even be that they just don’t like to feel guilty about “living in sin” or other immoral behavior (divorcing & remarrying) that is more ‘tolerated’ by some other faiths. I think for the most part, it’s because they never really got very much out of their catechism classes. They probably didn’t pay attention, and their parents never paid attention to what they were or weren’t learning, if they ever attended them at all. Their parents might have also been very lax in their own faith, so the kids were basically raised as “Catholics in name only”. Unfortunately, I know a lot of those kinds of Catholics. 😦

This is true. My sister converted to Mormonism because of a high school Mormon boyfriend she planned to marry. Even though she joined the Mormon church, her boyfriend’s parents would not allow him to marry her because they were from a 6th-generation high-ranking Mormon family and she was not.

I’m Catholic, married to a man who is baptized LDS (he doesn’t practice but he also converted to LDS when he was 18.) His kids, my step-children, were raised LDS and I took them to LDS services so they could continue in their religion when they lived with us. Funny, they all ended up getting married to Catholics. I’m sure that’s just co-incidence. 😉

Anyway, there are worse religions to which your son could convert. The LDS are very loyal within their group. They are typically well employed. For instance, the FBI specifically looks for LDS to hire as agents - they’re well known for being able to keep secrets, you know. The LDS tend to be very patriotic and family oriented. The religion itself keeps the family busy almost every night of the week. They’ll never want for friends. But of course, the LDS religion is also very “high maintenance”. As my hubby said, he got tired of wearing a suit and tie every single flippin’ day of the week.

I suggest you not object too strongly. Ask lots of questions. Get him thinking about what he believes but let him come to his own conclusions. It will be easier for him to change his mind if he thinks it is his idea.

Glad to see both of you on board here. There is absolutely nothing I can add.

After learning the truth about the Book of Abraham, it absolutely blows my mind that anyone could hear this and still believe that Joseph Smith was prophet of God. A link to this video was posted yesterday and I sat there amazed at both the origins of the papyri (which they don’t teach you in Seminary) as well as the doe-eyed belief of the Mormons featured in the film. It’s long, almost an hour, but worth it.
