What if each and every soul here endeavored, with the grace of God, to live the following prayer every day of the New Year:
***Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may seek not so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Can you imagine the difference we could make in our domestic church, in our parish church, in our country? Every good action we do has a ripple effect as well as every not so good action.

For a long time now I have been pondering this, and I thought to post it here in case anyone else would like to give it a try along with me. 🙂

It would be a different world, wouldn’t it? 😃
It would! Can you imagine the difference it would make? It wouldn’t even take a lot of people. Our Lord can work miracles using the spiritually poorest of the poor who were making an honest effort.

It is worth a try.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. May I add that sometimes, people need a few concrete examples to go by. Jesus told us to love our enemies and to pray for them. In some cases, that’s all we can do.
  1. Hatred can be hard. It could be a family member who was hurt by somebody. Or you were hurt by somebody, physically, emotionally or financially. Pray to God to understand coping with the anger and/or betrayal or loss.
  2. Sometimes, an unintentional injury can be easy to pardon depending on its severity. Other times, talk to a priest or a close friend. Sometimes, just talking it out will help. And pray.
  3. Doubts can come about for a number of reasons. God wants you to trust him more. Again, if you have someone to confide in, talk about it. And pray.
  4. Occasional despair can occur after or during a crisis or strain in a relationship, for example. Talk to family and friends to help you cope. And pray.
  5. Darkness comes when the truth is covered by falsehoods. Speak the truth - post the truth. Defend the truth with calm, polite words.
  6. Sadness. For ourselves, a family member, a friend, requires encouragement. It is my sincere hope that all of us either have friends or family who can help. If not, schedule a phone call with your parish priest.
Let us make friends with other Catholics.

Hope this helps,
Ed

Thank you, Ed, for adding these six very important items (especially #5).

I don’t think any of this will be easy, especially for me, but we are in need of something “drastic” and this seems to fit the bill. Too much anger. Too much division. Too much looking to be understood instead of seeking to understand. The list goes on.

You’re welcome. For example, I see waaay too much anger on the internet. It concerns me that some might think that this sort of angry about whatever and unrestrained “I’m angry at something, so instead of being calm and rational, I’m really gonna let this poster I disagree with have it with both barrels” is showing bad example and encouraging more bad examples.

Let’s (including me) be good examples.

Peace,
Ed

Shouldn’t we already have been doing that for the past 2000 years?
