What would “Catholic Party” Platform look like??
The platform of the Catholic Labor Party or the Catholic Social Democratic Party would be pro-life (with no incoherent exceptions), pro-family, pro-worker, and anti-war. It would be based on the socioeconomic teachings of the Catholic Church.

Keep and spread the Faith.

So…Social conservative, fiscal liberal, not isolationist, but diplomatic “solutions” only (“war is never the answer”) in foreign policy??

I’d participate in the poll but I’m soooooooo tired of labels!!!

I was expecting a list of issues and the position the party would take on that particular issue.

Yikes. Think a little!!

Supports abortion “rights”…social liberal
Supports tax increases and more gov’t programs…social liberal
Supports diplomatic “solutions”, never war…

Is that you…"labelly" speaking?? 😉

The closest one for me was Social conservative, fiscal conservative, anti-war foreign policy.
  • Social conservative is a no-brainer. Morality is lacking due to Relativism.
  • Fiscal Conservative due to belief that the private organization can handle social programs more efficiently than the government.
  • I do not agree with the anti-war part since war has to be put in context of the situation.

Supports abortion ‘rights’ = a party which would press to have federal monies spent toward making abortions more accessible to women.

Supports tax increases and more government programs…well those are two separate issues…

Under what circumstances would this party support tax increases? (no party can vow to never raise taxes, oh wait - one party did, didn’t they? but how long did that last…)

As for more government programs…what kind of programs???

Supports diplomatic solutions…does **not **equal never war.

So, yes. I am a thinker.
That’s why I am tired of the lazy labels used to lump policies and ideals into coin phrases.

Whatever this party is, just tell me in real words what you stand for so that I can determine whether or not to give you my support.

I couldn’t vote, because the

‘social conservative, fiscal liberal, anti-war’

option wasn’t there, and that’s the one I think.

I am not aware if this poll was a multiple choice or not.
Maybe if the poll had these multiple choices:

Liberal economics
Conservative economics
Liberal social stance
Conservative social stance
Liberal foreign policy
Conservative foreign policy
Other

then one can mix and match the issues that would paint a clearer picture of the Party.

However I do agree that not all Liberals and Conservatives are think the same. there are varying degrees to both.

Socially, the Catholic party would be considered conservative. It would support policies to end abortion, strengthen marriage and families, and promote traditional values.

Fiscally… well, let’s say liberal in emergencies, but conservative in solutions. In other words, when someone is starving, you give them food. Maybe you’d call that liberal – I’d just call it human. Long term it would seek to promote education and self-sufficiency on the one hand, and local charity and assistance on the other. A Catholic party would seek to transform society from one that assumes the government will take care of everyone, to one in which individuals take personal responsibility for the welfare of their neighbor. It would seek to mold a citizenry that could be trusted to pay only 5% in taxes, but give 25% in charity. It would be a society that helped and cared for everyone in need, and did it cheerfully without creating soul-destroying bureaucracies and institutions.

Foreign policy: The Catholic party would take the “love your neighbor” concept to the global scale. It would not turn a blind eye to famine, tyranny, or oppression in the world. It would be an activist foreign policy that would try to bring the best solutions to situations like the genocide in Sudan, the AIDS crisis in Africa, and human rights abuses in so many countries throughout the world. It would seek practical solutions - not knee-jerk responses to “do something just to do something” - that may mean diplomacy, aid, or intervention. Military options would not be discarded out of reflexive anti-war sentiment, but they would be evaluated in light of the just war doctrine, particularly the clause that “the use of arms must not produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated.”

Mike, sorry, I should have included that. :o

It would be based on the socioeconomic teachings of the Catholic Church.

I need clarification on this subject; what exactly is the socioeconomic teachings of the Catholic Church?

**YingYangMom:**Supports abortion ‘rights’ = a party which would press to have federal monies spent toward making abortions more accessible to women.
That is NOT a Catholic position. Are you Catholic??
Supports tax increases and more government programs…well those are two separate issues…
Uh, no, they’re very much tied together.
Under what circumstances would this party support tax increases?
You know about the bishop in Minnesota?? Anyway, democrats almost always want to raise taxes, one way or another.
As for more government programs…what kind of programs???
You name it. It’s not necessarily what it is spent on, but how it is spent, and what results are being returned from such spending that
countsSupports diplomatic solutions…does **not **equal never war.
Good thinking.

You are ahead of alot of people. 🙂

Agreed. It’s just a poll so that we can clarify our thoughts and expand on those labels *in the thread…like you and I are doing now. 🙂 *

I was just pointing out examples of the type of wording I am seeking.
And even your descriptions of policies/positions is quite vaque, not enough detail. It definitely makes a difference HOW money would be spent by this party, and no, democrats don’t always want to raise taxes for the sake of raising taxes. They do want to find ways to fund sorely needed programs to help as many people as possible rather than a small elite group.
I’m not defining what this party would look like, but I’m asking what the OPs vision would have entailed so that I could vote one way or the other.

The Catholic Church’s support of forced busing here in Boston has left me wary of the Church’s out-of-touch politics. The victims of forced busing feel towards the Church the way sexual abuse victims feel towards the Church. 😦

I chose the last option, but I protest the “anti-war” connotation. The Catholic Church is the one that formulated the Just War Doctrine, so it would not be a total pacifist ideology. If you mean non-aggressive, or semi-isolationist, I can buy that.

Bobby A. Greene:

The socioeconomic teachings of the Catholic Church are those contained in Vatican II’s *Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World * (whose Latin title is Gaudium et spes):

I voted the social and fiscal conservative and “anti-war”, but I think isolationist is the correct term. I don’t think they are interchangable. The Church teaches that a country is obligated to defend its people.

Come to think of it, even isolationist is a bit of a stretch.

In fact, all of the terms are subject to definition. Fiscal moderate would probably be more accurate, since the Church is against communism and unfettered captialism.

:hmmm:…I’m changing my vote!

Social conservative, fiscal moderate, sort-of isolationist unless there is a just war, which we need to get involved in. 😛

God Bless,

Robert

In their zeal for assimilation, the Catholic heirarchy (in particular Cardinal Cushing) sold out their Boston parishoners, I’m afraid to say.

I’m reading a fascinating book right now that deals with busing in Boston as well as urban renewal. It’s called The Slaughter of Cities by E. Michael Jones. It can be obtained through *Culture Wars *magazine. It is well worth the read.

Try not to allow the busing issue to dampen your faith.

Peace 🙂
