Tell me, can you kill an animal with your nails and your canine teeth? Read Genesis 1 and the world God created and wanted.
Yes? haven’t you heard of goldfish swallowing? And can’t you wring the neck of a chicken or rabbit?

And God, definitely did not create the world in Gen 1, since suffering and death existed long, long before humans arrived to eat from the wrong tree and stuff everything up.

That’s not created for eating meat.

You can believe what you like.

Whether by farm factories or not, killing a sensitive being is in all sorts cruel

What? Er explain why we have canine teeth then? And don’t have 4 stomachs so can’t graze like ruminants can.

And it’s no coincidence that all the smart animals are either carnivores or omnivores.

Again, do you think we can kill and tear out chunks of fles and chew those raw chunks of meat with those canines.

So eating meat makes one smart? I do not eat meat so I must be dumb. Someone needs to tell the rhinos, hippos and elephants how dumb they are too.

I would love to why we can eat meat if we are not meant to do so. Try feeding meat to a cow or a horse and you end up with sick animals with mad cow disease. We were made by God to eat meat, and not eating meat can make you sick. Also our bodies crave meat. If you don’t believe me, read this.

And to finish up, how about from the Bible. Acts 10:11-13

11 and saw heaven thrown open and something like a big sheet being let down to earth by its four corners;

12 it contained every kind of animal, reptile and bird.

13 A voice then said to him, ‘Now, Peter, kill and eat!’

I don’t know about you, but that is pretty clear to me, KILL AND EAT means just that. KILL AND EAT!

Sorry, but that’s an old wife’s tale. I for one do not crave meat, in fact I would feel ill if I tried to eat meat now.

That passage is not to be read literally. It is about Peter’s Jewish intolerance of non Jews and God telling him to spread the word to all. You can read the commmentaries.

As the issue of Jews and Gentiles has already been clarified - let me address the ‘health’ of a vegetarian diet - the blogger home economist you provided the link to - may find it useful to avail themselves of more accurate information, for example the USDA:
choosemyplate.gov/tipsresources/vegetarian_diets.html - it is*** certainly possible to eat a healthy vegetarian / vegan diet ***- as it is an omnivore diet - it is also possible to eat any of these diets in an unhealthy way. 😃

Actually I think some if not most herbivores have canine teeth as well. Also aren;t some maybe all parrots vegetarians?

But it would be most accurate to say that humans are capable of eating and getting nutrients from meat. However we are not obligate carnivores and do not NEED meat.

What you say is all correct. All parrots are vegetarians, not sure if they may inadvertently get a worm in a fruit.

Yes, we do not need meat to live. The legth of our intestines is more like that of a cow than a carnivore. My dogs eat vegetarian food too and they thrive. I know some who feed their cats vegan food but I am not sure about that. Maybe it works with supplements.

Dogs can survive on vegetarian though probably best with some meat. For cats it is a bad idea cats are considered obligate carnivore and their diet needs can;t really be met by a vegan or vegetarian food and while with supplements they might be ok for a time over time it could become a major health problem.

But unlike humans cats were clearly evolved to eat meat. Their teeth their digestive system all designed for meat and bone and organs.

This is a strange comment. What difference does it make that we use tools instead of our bodies. We don’t graze either nor do animals cook, grind, or bake their food. Your comment doesn’t prove anything.

Interesting that you say that it wasn’t to be read literally while reading Genesis literally? 🤷
here is what the commentary says on the USCB website says
The vision is intended to prepare Peter to share the food of Cornelius’ household without qualms of conscience (Acts 10:48). The necessity of such instructions to Peter reveals that at first not even the apostles fully grasped the implications of Jesus’ teaching on the law. In Acts, the initial insight belongs to Stephen.
  • [10:17–23] The arrival of the Gentile emissaries with their account of the angelic apparition illuminates Peter’s vision: he is to be prepared to admit Gentiles, who were considered unclean like the animals of his vision, into the Christian community
So like so many other scripture passages the meaning is layered. It abolished the dietery laws of the Old Testement. It prepared Peter to accept the Gentiles.
What constitues cruelty is not an accepted definition by all. Some believe that cages are cruel others do not. Who is right? I am not sure there is right answer.

Since I was responding to a comment about how humans were made for meat, your comment has no relevance to mine.

I know quite well that Genesis is allegorical, that are what the parables are, so should we ignore them.

Since I am aware of the pain and suffering caused by my eating meat, I have chosen not to do so. That is right to me.

Yes, that is what I have read about cats. From personal experience, dogs are fine with vegetarian diets. I have some non vegetarians who have switched to vegetarian food for their dogs as they found that it worked better for their skin.

It proves that our bodies were not naturally meant to eat meat. Do you realize how much sanitation and preperation goes into the safe eating of meat? As opposed to a lion or dog for instance who can just eat raw meat.

Well, the animal knows cruelty, that’s for sure. It’s fairly easy to know when an animal is in distress actually. An honest person looking at modern factory farming and meat production will easily see unnecessary and horrendous cruelty. Cruelty we should not try to make excuses for…

The church founded by Jesus says that eating meat is fine, now you can CHOOSE not to eat meat if you like, I could care less, its more for me then. However the church says I can eat meat and has never said that I cannot other then a few days a year, which we give up because meat is so yummy.

Also note that the Church says we can eat shellfish and pigs, so you can SAY anything you want to, but we can still eat meat, and it is NOT a sin. In fact I could hunt 100 animals a year and it will in no way affect my odds of getting into heaven.

I have never cared about what others choose to eat, why do you care so much? I have some good friends who are vegetarians. They do not care that I eat meat, the church does not care that I eat meat and I love meat, what makes you think you can tell others what to do?

The church is NOT pro-vegetarian and you know it, so you can try to make it seem like it all you want, however the facts are eating meat is fine and moral. In fact I might just take up hunting and fishing now in order to get more yummy meat into my tummy.

The issue is not eating meat. The issue is unnecessary cruelty, torture really, that is taking place in the factory farming. No one is saying you can’t eat meat, hunt or whatever. In fact, it would be much better if you personally hunted every single animal you ate b/c from the perspective of cruelty to animals it is much much more humane than raising them in completely unnatural conditions for their entire lives, cutting off parts of their bodies etc…

Anyone attempting to make this issue about eating meat is setting up a straw man. The Church says you can eat meat. The Church also says you can have sex. But that doesn’t mean you can have sex whenever or however you want. If fact, almost everything permitted by the Church is permitted within a moderation and conditions. If you simply don’t care about animals and think they are lower than dirt and simply for here for your gastronomic pleasure than just say that and move on. But God does care, He doesn’t forget even the sparrow.

Bottom Line: The CCC says eating meat is fine but that unnecessary and wanton cruelty towards animals is wrong. There is NO way to square the typical factory farm with these precepts.

Since I was responding to a comment about how humans were made for meat, your comment has no relevance to mine…
Really? What was the relavance of your comment? I took it to mean that because man didn’t eat raw meant and take an animal by hand that it somehow proved man wasn’t omnivores. Your reasoning was flawed because as humans we use tools and we don’t hunt like an animal. You don’t eat vegetables like animals either so if you are going to make a comparison of how animals eat you have to make it all the way.

I know quite well that Genesis is allegorical, that are what the parables are, so should we ignore them.

Since I am aware of the pain and suffering caused by my eating meat, I have chosen not to do so. That is right to me.

You were trying to use the Bible to support your view. The question isn’t that we should ignore them but we shouldn’t use them to promote a paticular view that was not intended in Scripture.
You must always do what your conscience says in that you are right.

I found this article. It contains what I was taught in school:
Are humans meat eaters or vegetarians by nature?
Like the hard-core carnivores, we have fairly simple digestive systems well suited to the consumption of animal protein, which breaks down quickly. Contrary to what your magazine article says, the human small intestine, at 23 feet, is a little under eight times body length (assuming a mouth-to-anus “body length” of three feet). This is about midway between cats (three times body length), dogs (3-1/2 times), and other well-known meat eaters on the one hand and plant eaters such as cattle (20 to 1) and horses (12 to 1) on the other. This tends to support the idea that we are omnivores.
Herbivores also have a variety of specialized digestive organs capable of breaking down cellulose, the main component of plant tissue. Humans find cellulose totally indigestible, and even plant eaters have to take their time with it. If you were a ruminant (cud eater), for instance, you might have a stomach with four compartments, enabling you to cough up last night’s alfalfa and chew on it all over again.
Or you might have an enlarged cecum, a sac attached to the intestines, where rabbits and such store food until their intestinal bacteria have time to do their stuff. Digestion in such cases takes place by a process of fermentation–bacteria actually “eat” the cellulose and the host animal consumes what results, namely bacteria dung.
The story is roughly the same with teeth. We’re equipped with an all-purpose set of ivories equally suited to liver and onions. Good thing, too. I won’t claim meat is the ideal source of protein, but on the whole it’s better than plants. Sure, soybeans and other products of modern agriculture are pretty nutritious. But in the wild, much of the plant menu consists of leaves and stems, which are low in food value. True herbivores have to spend much of the day scrounging for snacks just to keep their strength up.
So make no mistake: we were born to eat meat. That’s not to say you have to. There’s no question that strictly from a health standpoint we’d all be a lot better off eating less meat (red meat especially) and more fruits and vegetables. But vegetarians aren’t going to advance their cause by making ridiculous claims.

I found this article. It contains what I was taught in school:
Are humans meat eaters or vegetarians by nature?
That article is a joke my friend. Our teeth are nothing like a carnivores or omnivores. Meat does not pass easily through our intestines, in fact, it can get stuck in there for years. It also constipates us, whereas fruits and veggies do the opposite. I could go deeper but the proof we were not “born to eat meat” is in the fact that eating a high meat diet kills us. A dog or cat can eat as much meat as they want without developing the diet related diseases we do.

Besides, if we were born to eat meat it would be the first thing you feed to a baby. As it is it’s the very last thing they are fed and it has to be very carefully prepared and chopped up into very small pieces. Sometimes, the mothers will even half way chew it up for the kids.

But for the sake of argument let’s just say we are totally born to eat meat, none of that would justify factory farming in anyway whatsoever. So again, this topic of biology is a red herring and the argument of eating meat vs vegetarian is a straw man. Even if we want to eat meat or need to eat meat we simply should not support gratuitous violence like factory farming. The author of the original article did a good job of explaining way.
