A "Charismaric Mass" on EWTN?

Being that you are in Oklahoma, you might be able to pick up a Spanish language Tejano station. **Tex-Mex conjunto is music that one would hear at a bar or at a dancehall. It is primarily played with guitars that sound like this: unta, unta, untatata, unta, unta, unta, unta, untata. ** It does feature some elements of German polka, like accordians, but, that is about it. It is not a genre that is at all suitable for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. In fact, were you to hear it, even though you may not understand Spanish, your toe might tap, but, that’s not advisable for Mass.

The musical style alone would disqualify it from being part of any EWTN broadcast, let alone a Charismatic Mass telecast. And, no, it does not qualify as inculturation since this is barroom music, not something that the Aztecs would have played some 500 years ago.

I hope this helps.

You’ve hit the nail on the head benedictgal. That type of music is also very common in what is known as “pachangas”.

Then I shall pray you’re never in charge of programming for EWTN. 🙂

Just because a part of a movement does things that are not in keeping with correct liturgical and theological procedures doesn’t mean that the whole movement should be condemned out of hand. I’m not saying that you specifically are doing this, but it does seem that a lot of folks on this forum (and others I’ve been on) do this. It’s a bit like – as the old saying goes – throwing the baby out with the bath water.

There are good things in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and LifeTeen movements. Both movements have drawn people into the Catholic Church and more importantly, have drawn people closer to Our Lord Jesus (which should be the goal of ALL Catholics). I cannot comment on the Neocatechuemnal Way as a movement as I know very little about it. I do not require anyone here to educate me on it. I have a friend called Google and he is very good at helping me find unbiased information on a wide variety of topics. 👍

I’m not trying to start a debate here. I just wanted to point out that you shouldn’t judge a movement by the few people who do something wrong. To judge a movement like CCR and LT (which are both supported by the Holy See as valid ministries) just because a few people take things too far or commit liturgical abuse is no different than the myriad of people who have judged the entirety of the Catholic priesthood based on the few priests who have committed sexual sins and crimes (I’m of course referring to the priest sex scandal).

That’s just my :twocents:

I agree with you totally!

A big all out party/bash. Lots of music, dancing, drinking.
Given that this is mostly where you here this genre, it is certainly not suitable for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

To those who note that the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, LifeTeen and the Neocatechumenal Way are aproved by the Holy See, no one is disputing that. The major bone of contention here is the way these movements have treated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The Holy See has come down rather strictly on a couple of these groups because they have elected to insert their own idiosyncracies into the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass instead of following the norms and rubrics of the Church. That is the big problem. When the movement becomes more important than the Church, then there are some serious issues.

Even though Mother Angelica no longer has that direct, personal involvement in EWTN, that is not to say that the staff that she currently has in place does not consult with her on a regular basis. They know how faithful she is to the Church. I believe that they would not want anything that would be subpar to be broadcast, this includes liturgies, documentaries and the like. Give me one Papal Mass over 1,000,000 broadcasts of a LifeTeen or a CCR Mass.

And this is certainly your choice. But since the Church does “tolerate” inculturation, and local custom, it is not your call, if it is allowed by the local Bishop.

If there is no other Mass available to you, you may make a complaint, but if the Bishop (or Vatican, if you take it that far) permit it (probably it would be the majority), there is not much you can do.

Pass off conjunto music as inculturation – you must like to joke.

I don’t know this type of music. And I don’t know what is allowed by the Bishop. This doesn’t sound like the charismatic music, which is approved by the local Bishop.

But whatever it is, the steps to address the perceived abuse are the same.

See how far off topic this went? From speaking of the programming of a conservative traditional station, to bashing Charismatics and cultural Masses----how sad.

I don’t think anyone has intentionally bashed charismatics or cultural Masses. What has been said is that charismatic practices are best exercised outside the Mass and that not all culture is suitable for use within the Mass. Rock and Roll and grunge are part of my culture but they have no place in the Mass.

As I said, I will not judge what a Bishop allows. There are proper ways to report perceived abuses. The topic is the programming of ewtn, not “what I don’t like about some Charismatic or cultural Masses”

Thank you Marsha. As you wisely observed charismatic practices have no place within the context of the Mass. All that should be done is found within the confines of the approved liturgical books and documents.

It is a huge stretch to refer to Tex-Mex conjunto as inculturation. It is commercially-produced music that belongs in the same category (not genre, just category) as rock, grunge, hip-hop and country.

What we may not quite understand is that inculturation refers to the indigenous culture of the native people. Even that point, it needs to be purified to make it suitable for use in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, not the other way around. The authoritative, liturgical documents of the Church are quite clear about that.

EWTN makes a conscientious effort to be faithful to the Church in its programming, especially in its broadcasts of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Given the elements contained in these so-called “Charismatic Masses”, they probably would not pass muster.
