As we said, a man can change his mind. It’s unfortunate, however, that a former President couldn’t leave policy differences at the water’s edge. And Mr. Clinton would do well to consider that while it’s one thing for Senators to grasp at poll numbers to win an election, it’s quite another for a former President to give them political cover. Mr. Clinton’s remarks will only make it harder for the next Democratic President–maybe his own wife–to lead the country during wartime.

It must be nice to change your mind after-the-fact, when you’re not the decision maker. I wonder if he has changed his mind about any of his own presidential actions.

Once a poll hound, always a poll hound. :hmmm: …no smiley licking his finger and holding it up to the wind… We have a definite shortage of smilies!

When your course of action does not turn out as you thought it would, when you have new information that makes your original decision inadequate, when you are driving around lost you are smart to realize you made a mistake and change direction. Of course, you have to be smart enough to realize you’re on the wrong path and have the guts to admit you made a mistake in the first place.

Your talking about admitting a mistake and changing your current and/or future course of action right?

A) It’s better for all concerned for a former president to keep his mouth shut about such decisions. This was the norm until recently.

B) It’s one thing to say, well it looks like, in hindsight, we made a mistake, but I agreed with the decision based on the data we had on the time. However, President Clinton said “Saddam is gone. It’s a good thing, but I don’t agree with what was done.” You can’t undo something that is already done based on decisions you agreed with!

Based on his past behavior, it is my opinion that Clinton is changing his tune because support for the war is below 50%. If it rises above 50%, look for him to reverse course again and tell us how he was behind the president the whole time.

President Clinton signed into law the very act which made removing Saddam Hussein from power an official foreign policy goal of the U.S. The “rush to war” started in 1998.

President Bush was just the man in office when this policy was finally acted upon. The same thing would’ve happened regardless of who was sitting in the Oval Office.

– Mark L. Chance.

I just wish that former Democrat presidents would not go over seas and attack the US. If anyone had done to Clinton or Carter what they have done to all the Republican Presidents who have come after them they would have had a fit. The media would have soundly taken that former President to task.
The sad thing is that by taking the policies of the current President to task they are injuring the Country and those who serve it. They are not injuring the current President.

“One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line.”
President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998.

“If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction program.”
President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998.

And, on that narrow basis, Clinton did rather well, didn’t he? 🙂

The only thing Clinton did well was commit adultry and lie about it.

I fail to see how that can be doing something ‘well’, unless you mean in providing a gift for his enemies to hang him with.

What do you mean by this? All he accomplished was the destruction of an aspirin factory, a school, and a couple of other non-military targets. The general feeling here is that every time he needed to draw public attention away from the latest scandal he lobbed a few missles at Iraq.

He said he wanted Saddam to not have WMD. Seemed he managed that quite well.

Mike
He had nothing to do with it. The only management of Saddam’s WMD’s was by Saddam himself in getting them to Syria before the invasion.

This is something we should thank the normal American Jay Rockefeller. Going over to Saudi Arbia, Syria, and Jordon before the war to warn the government of those countries that a war was possible. Let’s see he a replublican right.

All I have to say is that we better start asking for the intersession of Saint Thomas More the saint of statesmen. I don’t think that our statesmen can get much worse.

No he is a Democrat and if he did that he should be tried as a traitor.

Clinton isn’t perfect but then nobody is. But I believe that he really cares about people while I don’t think the current admin. care about anybody but their rich buddies - but that is just my opinion. And I was raised as a FDR Democrat, so I’m sure that explains why I feel this way.

Please tell me when the war on poverty or social security is going to improve the lives of the poor or the elderly? If you were to look at these policies closely you will discover that they have been a failure. It has been a 40 year war on poverty and there are more people in poverty than there was before. Social security is failing and needs to be fixed. I was a Democrat until I looked at the policies and I could no longer stay in that party. If you look at rich buddies hear are a few names George Soros, Peter B. Lewis, Barbara Striensan, Bill Gates, Jay Rockafeller, Ted Kennedy, John Heinz Kerry and Bruce Springstein. What do all of these people have in common? They are all Democrats, the party of FDR no longer exist. As sad as that make me it is true.
As for the current admin. I think that you should try getting news other than in our media. They will find anyone to tell the country the worst about the admin. Bush is not a perfect person, no one is, yet he does care about people. He is the first President to separate out the imposition of abortion form our aid to foreign countries and the first to support Aids relief in Africa. He was the first president since Reagan to be invited to the Vatican.

Clinton should have spoken out against our Iraq venture before the initial attack. On the other hand, that would have made him look inconsistent, if not hypocritical, in view of his history with his own military ventures. He has no credibility.

I get a kick out of some of these names… some of these folks have enormous assets, well protected by “trusts” so that they are immune from the slings and arrows of daily life. One famous finance guy, not named here, is vitriolic against estate tax reform. Turns out, that because of the high taxes on estates, he is able to buy family businesses for CHEAP. Of course, he doesn’t want the tax structure changed!!!

We need a thread about those truly rich who have a real conflict of interest when they legislate or lobby against working people.

I’m reading a truly interesting book: “Brighter Than the Baghdad Sun” [subtitle: “Saddam Hussein’s Nuclear Threat to the United States”] by Shyam Bhatia and Daniel McGrory. Detail after detail about how Saddam Hussein built and very effectively concealed his nuclear weapons program. Read this book!!!
