This claim has been made by Dawkins and others."As I said: never has war or genocide been commited in the name of atheism. Just mentioning dictators who happened to be nonreligious does not count; they did their ills in the name of ideology. Some enforced atheism, some enforced christianity.
I am open to changing my mind, to being disproven. Show to me evidence that indicates there is a correlation between secularism and tyranny, and I will accept it."
This is what I was told by a guy I am debating. He claims that atheism has its hands clean of blood, where as religion does not. Stalin, Mao, Robespierre, he claims all used ideology and did not kill in the name of atheism. So Atheism can’t be blamed in people’s deaths the way Christianity and religion can when tyrants have killed in its name.
Can someone help me come up with a correlation between secularism and tyranny please?
Marxism, which was the underlying ideology of the large modern Communist states, did explicitly reject all religion. As such, it could be called a form of atheism. Stain did engage in genocide as head of the newly formed communist state, and under the authority of purifying the state of those who would corrupt or oppose communism.
