Can a Catholic who is visiting a non-denominational church wear a Crucifix necklace or would the church be offended by that?

Don’t cover it up. No Christian should be offended by the act that redeemed us.

If the ND church is offended by Christ on the Cross…that should be an indicator it’s not the right place to be.

What is your reason for wearing a visible Catholic symbol to a non-Catholic church?

I wore a crucifix and Miraculous Medal in the Saudi Embassy in Washington DC, quite literally no one cared except my sister. I was there with a Saudi friend of mine. If I don’t take my crucifix off at the Saudi Embassy, I’m not going to take it off at someone else’s place of worship.

My daughter just gave it to me for Christmas, though I’m not wearing it now, nor do I plan on putting it on before I go there. I did wear another Crucifix and Miraculous Medal during another visit, but I tried to make sure it was tucked into my top.

This probably varies from congregation to congregation. Non-denoms are like stars in the sky - just as numerous and no two exactly the same.

This Crucifix not only represents a “Catholic symbol” but has sentimental value since my daughter gave it to me.

Please God, not people. Wear your necklace.

The non-denominational Church I attended did not even have a cross anywhere in the building. They took the “no graven” images concept, and the Bible itself, really literal. Knowing that, I wouldn’t wear my Crucifix if I ever had a reason to go back: “But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.” 1 Corinthians 8:9.

Exactly, if you are going to convert to another faith, respect that faith.

I wear my crucifix and saint medal always. The only time I take the chain off is for certain medical procedures like x-rays and scans. I wear it outside my clothing always and that will not change no matter where I go.

I don’t understand why someone that is Catholic would take off or hide their crucifix. Am I missing something?
If someone wore a Star of David while visiting a Catholic Church, would it offend anyone? Should I be offended by plain crosses?

Someone explain this to me because I don’t get it. Aren’t we all free to wear what we want?

I didn’t wear symbols much, but a while back the Bishop spoke at our church, and he said to wear your cross or crucifix. He wasn’t saying a plain cross (as I have) is any different from a crucifix. He just wants us to get out there and wear the cross, whatever it looks like. So I have been wearing mine more these days.

I wear my Crucifix and Miraculous Medal over all my clothes 24/7 except showering and I’m in college so I’ve had people see my Crucifix and laugh. But hey, we are called to die to ourselves.

So yes wear it

If you walk into a fundamentalist non-denominational church like I grew up in with a crucifix on, expect to be confronted with this commandment that they will interpret literally:

You shall not make for yourself a graven image,
or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,
or that is in the earth beneath,
or that is in the water under the earth;
you shall not bow down to them or serve them;
for I the LORD your God am a jealous God,
visiting the iniquity of the fathers
upon the children to the third and the fourth
generation of those who hate me,
but showing steadfast love to thousands of those
who love me and keep my commandments

It would be disrespectful, likening to a non catholic walking up to the alter, grabbing the ciborium, and munching on the hosts like potato chips.

Thanks for the kind words. For now (and I may change my mind in the future) I just love their music, sermons and feel the Holy Spirit more deeply there. Their services really touch me.

John 6:67-69

67 Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?”
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life;
69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
