Although Aloysius Schwartz died 23 years ago, the small Holy Name Catholic Church on 11th Street NE prays for him every Sunday, in hopes they can one day call him a saint.
He is known as “Father Al,” featured with a wide smile in the weekly bulletins spread among the pews where he grew up, attended the church school and decided to pursue the priesthood.
“Father Al was special,” said Holy Name pastor Michael Briese. “A lot of good people have come through here, but he was really more than that.”

His sister was a longtime parishioner here at our parish. Her husband still worships with us and our parish has been following his cause closely.
Fr. Al’s story is remarkable.
May it be God’s will that Fr. Al be canonized soon.
