A Dream I Had

I dreamed last night that my boyfriend was telling me I should love him more and that I should devote more time to him. Only thing is, I no longer have a boyfriend. Could this have been God talking to me and I just misinterpreted it to be a boyfriend? 🤷 :confused:
 
Usually God uses ordinary means (Scripture, the teachings of the Church, etc.) to speak to us. Although He has spoken to some people (e.g., Joseph) in dreams, that’s not His usual means of operation.

But if the dream, even though it may be the normal workings of your imagination, is reminding you to love God more, that’s a good thing! Heed it.

The Song of Songs is a love song telling his lover how much he misses and desires her. It’s traditionally (at least in the Catholic Church) interpreted as Jesus telling us how much He wants us and wants to be with us.

I think Jesus wants you to spend more time with Him, either in adoration or in the Eucharist.

It’s quite possible that the Lord was speaking to you in that way, with that message. It’s common in dreams for there one person you know to actually represent someone or something else.

I wouldn’t say that that’s certainly what the Lord was saying to you, of course. Usually, after I get a dream that I think may be from the Lord, I ask him to give me some clear follow-up sign.

If the dream is just obviously from God, I don’t bother with that.

If it’s obviously not from God, I don’t bother either.

If you don’t feel sure, you could always ask him to give you a sign you can be sure about, which tells you whether or not the dream was from him. But whether the dream was from him or not, the message is a godly one. God always wants to spend more time with us, and for us to spend more time with him :). And the scripture tells us to pray continually. The Lord always wants more intimacy with everyone, so this is clearly not out of line with God’s personality.

Unless it’s judging you and telling you you’ve been bad, or something, but it doesn’t sound like it was.

The Lord speaks to people through dreams quite frequently. He’s spoken in that way to me several times.
 
The Fathers say to pay NO attention to dreams. This is something demons use to lure away unwary souls.

I don’t think you’re right about this. You’ll have to prove it.

The scriptures record MANY dreams from the Lord God gave those he loved.

Yes, I do think the dream was reminding me to love God more and to spend more time with Him. I do not know for sure but I honestly believe it was a dream from God. Regardless, I will heed this reminder to love God more.

Thank you. I am planning to start spending 1 hour a week in Eucharistic adoration again at the perpetual adoration chapel in my area. 🙂

Yes, I honestly think the Lord was speaking to me through that dream. Again, I am not sure but I do think He was.

Could you please provide a quote from the early Church Fathers that say this? I personally doubt what you are saying no offense. After all, in the Old Testament, God gave dreams to be people quite often it seems.

Dreams are phantoms, don’t trust them.

But do pray for your ex-bf.
 
I would take anything that leads us to a greater love of God as coming from God in someway. We only exist because God is thinking about us. If He stopped thinking about us we’d cease to exist. So God is very involved in our lives. But don’t seek the extraordinary or you’ll likely be the victim of diabolical deception ,in most cases. Look for God in the ordinary , seemingly mundane events of every day. You will find Him there.

Frankly I think its simply a dream. Nothing more. No meaning.

Well about 2 years ago, after falling away from the Church for 3 years because of a letter they sent me, I started to question Jesus was he realy the Son of God. After 3 years of thinking and be lured to almost believing he wasn’t, but being to afraid to totaly beleive. I started to pray. I prayed every night for a few months to send me signs. I believe that he did send them but I wasn’t open to Him to undestand them. Then one night I had the dream that changed my life and lead me to become the person I am today and to start my studies as a deacon. I heard in a booming voice in my dream that said “why do you not believe in me” with two arms stretched out to me. I woke up prayed for forgiveness and thanked the Lord for taken me back in to his arms. I now go to dailey mass and even pray for 1/2 - 1 hour in adoration after. If this was a demon trying to lure me away boy did he go the wrong

You had a great dream there. You were very blessed. Dreams can be good, bad or just our subconscious at work. Noah heard a voice. How did he know it was really God speaking? It could have been the enemy. But he knew and no doubt God infused that certainty into him. There’s nothing wrong with believing dreams are from God sometimes, but we should not seek to have them. That’s when the enemy can interfere the most. If God sends us a dream then fine, but don’t seek it. All this is not a specific reply to what you say. Good luck with your studies too. 👍

There are plenty of warnings in the Philokalia ( a collection of Eastern Christian spiritual writings) about the danger of believing in dreams.

Scripture covers some 2000 years of human history. There are only about a half-dozen dreams of any spiritual significance in the Bible.

That’s not “many” by any definition.
 
I think the last post makes some great points too. If we feel God has revealed something to us in a dream then we must note that if real this is a private revelation of types. And we can get it wrong as to whether it comes from God or what it means. St Francis of Assissi heard God tell him , " Francis, repair my church." And Francis went and repaired the local church building. Later he realised God meant him to repair the whole church. It’s best to get spiritual direction before you act on a dream I’d say. I heard that in recent times huge numbers of muslims in the islamic world had been converting to christianity because of visions of Jesus in dreams. I don’t know that it’s true but it was discussed on a christian radio show here with an author of a book about these secret converts. I think it’s true.
