Dear Ghosty and Mardukm,
Recently appeared on these boards a debate whether certain teaching, namely that about the toll-houses, or toll-boots, as places where demons meet and stop departed souls during their journey towards the particular judgment.
In the plight to prove it is an ancient doctrine, some refer to St. Anthony the Great and St. Macarios the Great, early monks of the Scetes desert.
Since the Scetes are in Egypt, while a number of Armenian, Greek, Nubian etc. monks were the disciples of St. Anthony and later on St. Macarios (as said here, beside the Greek word there should be words in Coptic and Armenian for it.
My questions are:
a) Are there words in Coptic and/or Armenian for toll-houses (tollboots, tollstations)?
b) Are there words in Coptic and/or Armenian for the demons as tax collectors, customs officers who meet the departed souls before the particular judgment?
c) Is such a theory known among Coptic Oriental Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic Church?
d) Are there any reference about the nationality of St. Anthony and St. Macarios, namely, were they native Coptic speakers or native Greek speakers?
e) Was monasticism present in the Scetes desert (or in nearby areas) uninteruptedly from the times of St. Anthony and St. Macarios, so there is some monasteries to have “uninterrupted line of succession” from them?
f) Are there any writings (preferably online) about the subject?
g) What knowledge Copts and Armenians have about the “Sayings of the Desert Fathers” (in Greek: “Evergetinos”) in their own tradition?
I’d be very much obliged by your answers.
Thanking you in advance,
OL
