A good pocket bible

As good as my pocket NASB be, it’s not a Catholic bible – so i am looking for one

from the following catalogue, I am looking at the following catalogue:

In particular, I am looking at DR or RSV. However, I am curious as to the “New Catholic bible” by CTS (not the New Catholic Version from catholic Book publishing)

Which one is the best? And how is the NCB by CTS (as seen in ctsbooks.org/catholic-bibles/). Also, note that I am in Canada, so I do not have to use NAB, nor do I intended to (I actually got a huge one from my aunt).

EDIT: Instead of a new thread: I also have 2 NIV, and I want to get rid of one (always keep one to know what evangelical/Alpha course is teaching). What should I do? Use it as a paperweight, give it to someone, ???
 
IMO, the 1941 Confraternity New Testament is superior to the RSV, NASB, JB, CTS or virtually any others. It is 100% Catholic, with excellent, confidence-inspiring footnotes and book introductions. A pocket version is published by Scepter and should be available at your local Catholic bookstore for $10.95.
 
I like my Ignatius RSV. It has a good zipper with an Immaculate Conception medal attached.

I also have a New American Bible. It’s the Illustrated St. Joseph Personal Size Edition, available from the Catholic Book Company. I like that it has a magnetic closure.

Except it only comes with New Testament from scepter 😦 and I am worried, as some even say that the “revised” Confraternity = NAB, which is a “meh” translation.

My only concern with DRC is that it’s not commonly in use and Psalm numbering is different (still too used to the -]Protestant/-] UCCSB numbering), and the lack of source from the Dead Sea Scrolls. If I have money to buy 2, one of them will definitely DRC, but since I am not that rich I can only buy one pocket bible…

IMO, the NAB is the weakest English language Catholic bible ever printed. It is neck and neck with the Good News Translation.

I do have an RSV-2CE compact NT/Psalms, but it is rather huge and not a true pocket-sized bible. As many of those Gideon KJV New Testament/Psalms as have been circulated, you’d think that the Church could offer something similar for Catholics.

I have both of the Bibles you’re looking at.

The Baronius Press DR pocket Bible with leather covers is excellent. (it has a book mark ribbon and many illustrations as well) It is a reprint of the 1899 Murphy bible. It is compact, easy to read, and seems well made to me.

The CTS pocket Bible is somewhat smaller in l x w, but fatter. Another excellent choice. It is the Jerusalem Bible with the Grail Psalter. It is approved for liturgies in the UK. It has modern language, so may be easier to understand than the DR.

Give the NIV to an Evangelical friend. I’m sure they would be grateful, and even if they don’t need it, they can pass it along to another fellow Evangelical. 😉

Have no fear! The Confraternity (1941) is a faithful, Vulgate-based translation. None of the post WWII modernist nonsense that crept in, and the 1941 translators were all senior clergy - something that was abandoned in the production of the NAB.

Another curiosity: The D-R and Confraternity “Prayer to the Holy Spirit Before Reading the Scriptures” (as well as the indulgence for same) was deleted from the NAB and NAB/RE. Why is that? The Holy Spirit no longer needed? In the cinema world, that would make George Burns the Father, Jim Caviezel the Son and what, Rodney Dangerfield the Holy Spirit?

Seriously, if the pocket 1941 Confraternity came with the Psalms, it would be darned near perfect.

Except it’s hard to find to non existent in Canada, and I do not have a Point Roberts mailbox – and even if so, Going through your president’s border just to retrieve a purchase from a point isolated from US by land is not exactly justified, when if you go traditional you have the CTS NCB compilation / DR for Old English, or RSV-2CE for Post Vatican II. That being said, That still leave what, 3 version for me to choose from?

I, on the other hand, do not believe in formula crutch. If people are just gonna skip it or just say it without a thought, that prayer is wasted; I think a prayer of asking for guidance by itself, conscious or not, is more benefical. – in fact, I start to detest footnotes/study notes on compact versions.

Come think of it, I think they also downplay the indulgence nowadays. No longer do they say “say this prayer, 300 years indulegence.” It’s more of “say this prayer, you may get indulgence.” Which I think make more sense for laymen’s term.

That being said, I do find that Catholic Publishers love to split the books – that prayer is probably in one of those prayer books by Catholic Book Publishing. From what I can gather, the Book for Divine Worship used by our Anglican-Use brothers was replaced with Divine Worship Missal + a seperate book for their Divine Office. Why can’t they just leave it all in one book???
 
Have you considered getting an electronic version? There are several Catholic versions available.

I have one installed on my iPad and iPhone using iBooks App. I find it handy as you do a keyword search and find passages easily.

Can’t get any more pocket than that! 😛

I did. Doesn’t have the same feel. I maybe a bit more old school then I thought.

So I guess it narrowed down to whether I will go deep into TLM or not. If not, RSV-CE or New Jerusalem. If I am going deep in TLM, then DRChan since I can’t find a DRConf in Canada AFAIK.i will probably scribble the Psalm number in that case. Plus, if KJV is what Orthodox use, then shouldn’t we also use an Old English Bible?

EDIT: did RSV-CE really translate Isaiah 7:14 with young woman???
Edit2: which translation, aside from DR, utilize “virgin” for Isaiah 7:14?
 
After looking at a collection of old Bible from a monastery, I am leaning toward DR, since Confrat is out of print. (Isaiah 7:14 and the “full of Grace” is my main criteria.)

Aside from Baronius press, who else print a pocket DR Bible?

Scepter prints fresh copies of the 1941 Confraternity daily. You can also search eBay, Amazon and ThriftBooks for used original copies.
 
The Scepter Confraternit is the NT only. Catholic Book Publishing Corporation published some “personal” sizes which, while not pocket sized per se, are certainly smaller if you find one of their personal size NABREs at a bookstore, their older confraternity ones are similar sized). I really like the translation of the psalms in the 1948-54 editions.

Yeah… except I live in Canada. Finding old book is not easy or cheap.

Speaking of DR, I just want to confirm something
  1. Is both Baronius press and Angelus press are good?
  2. Is Baronius Press the only company that issued Pocket DR?
