Report Warns of Terrorists’ ‘Great Ramadan Offensive’

(CNSNews.com) - Al Qaeda’s plans for a series of spectacular terrorist strikes in October, targeting American interests as well as U.S. allies in Europe and the Middle East and said to be coordinated by Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenant in Iraq - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi – are the subject of a non-public report issued by terrorism experts this week.

The attacks, planned to coincide with the Muslim observance of Ramadan and dubbed the “Great Ramadan Offensive,” are designed to create a “fateful confrontation” with the U.S. and Israeli forces in the Middle East, according to a May 30 letter from Zarqawi to bin Laden. The contents of the letter are referenced in the report written by Yossef Bodansky, the former director of the U.S. Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare.

October 29, 1983- 241 US Marines are killed in a truck bombing in Beirut by the Islamic Jihad ( controlled by Syria)

October 7, 1885- The Cruise ship the Achillo Laura was hijacked by Palestinian terrorists

Oct 4, 2001: 3 killed, 13 wounded, when a Fatah terrorist, dressed as an Israeli paratrooper, opened fire on Israeli civilians waiting at the central bus station in Afula.

Oct 29, 2002: Three people, including 2 fourteen year olds, were shot to death by a Fatah terrorist.

Yes, but the dates change each year. I couldn’t tell you if the incidents you mentioned occurred in Ramadan or not.

As for the original poster - don’t change your behaviour in any way whatever. That is letting terrorists beat you. Go and enjoy Rome 🙂

Select 1000 days at random during that 22 year span and see if attacks during Ramadan are more or less statistically likely.

My point is they don’t seem to care.

Zarqawi has threatened to conduct a “great Ramadan offensive” this October in an attempt to deter the referendum on the Iraqi constitution. Flash back to January of 2005, when al Qaeda also threatened to thwart the historic election of the Iraqi assembly. al Qaeda made the same threats, the Iraqi people raised purple thumbs in defiance, and al Qaeda’s vaunted attack failed to materialize until months after the election.

The Iraqi people will go to the polls and vote again, dealing yet another ideological blow to the jihadis and their fascist allies. And the Coalition will continue the hunt.

While some dedicated terrorists don’t care, a major offensive isn’t likely. It’s hard to muster tens of thousands of Muslims during Ramadan.

None of those dates fell in the Islamic month of Ramadan.

In 2002, Ramadan started about Nov 6.

In 2001, Ramadan started about Nov 17.

In 1985, Ramadan started about April 22.

In 1983, Ramadan started about May 14.

I may be off a day or two on the official start of Ramadan; I was calculating on the basis of a straight 11-day difference between the solar calendar and Islam’s lunar calendar. I know I was in Damascus for the start of Ramadan in 1998, about December 20, which is a long way from Oct 4, this year’s probable start.

I think it is pretty self-evident that those particular people had missed the point of Islam by quite a long way.

Ramadan: the Moslem “Lent” begins around October 4th and ends about November 2nd In the past two years terrorist attacks increased greatly, by about 25 percent in 2003 and nearly double that rate in 2004. The targets were most often Shia mosques and holy places, crowded with worshipers, leading to a high casualty rate.

Well, thanks all for the opinions, but I’m still unsure of the trip. Hubby is thinking of canceling, but I’ve told him that if this story was so big, why didn’t it show up in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, etc? You’d think they’d publish a story like this more quickly, wouldn’t you?

Thanks Gilliam for the news… it pretty much says terrorist attacks are going to stick around Iraq and such, which means Italy would still be safe…

Anyways, I’m still praying about it…
